Cox Cable - whole Home DVR Cisco

I thought you guys might be interested to know that Cox has started a slow release of their whole home dvr. I am in Tulsa.
Here is what I know:
  • It is a Cisco box with 500GB drive. Still dual tuner like the Motorola 3416.
  • They told me the eSata is active and supports up to 1TB.
  • The TV Guide Interface is much improved.
  • The charge is $5 more per month than the current HD DVR fee.
  • A $60 pro install is required.
  • They also require that you visit their office to get 'trained'. I was shown how to switch views and that's was really all...

I have 1 TV (I want the storage space and the new guide GUI) and they still told me they required a pro install for $60. I asked them to ask a manager if they really needed a pro install. His manager told him to tell me that they wanted to reserve these boxes for multiple TV households - so I left. For that reason and the $60 install plus $60 per year more (5x12).

Anyway, just an fyi. I am sure they install fee makes more sense if you have multiple TVs.

I'm in Tulsa (BA actually) as well. I ordered it this morning but install won't happen until next Friday. If you are interested, check out the different bundle deals going on. For me, the added $5/mo ended up being $12/mo less as I took advantage of a bundle deal.

I played around with the host and client boxes at the Woodland Hills store (next to B&N). Very responsive and the UI is considerably better. Couldn't get a knowledgeable answer on IP media streaming (I hope to be able to, if not now then in future updates).

I will reply back here with more info after I get a chance to play with it at home (for others who may read this and are interested).

To get into the the Diag screens on the new boxes:

Press and hold the power button for 4 seconds until the power indicator light blinks. Release button and press again to enter the diagnostic screens.

Interesting. Ive had the service for about two weeks in San Diego, CA. Pro install was required, but it was free. I didnt have to get any training either.

Would be interested in your thoughts... Anything worthwhile in the diagnostics menus?

Are you running a client as well? Is the ethernet port functional and can you stream media to and/or from PC or media player/streamers?

Unfortunately install is not free in the Tulsa market but $80 ($60 for the Plus install and $20 for a truck roll) but I will recover it in 6 months or so with my changes.

Another thing I am interested to find out is will they authorize my cable cards (I have 2) to get the additional HDs in the 860mhz band. The cards do 860 but the new HD channels are only part of the Plus package and you can only have it if you have the whole home DVR.

I called Cox yesterday, the first person I talked to was saying I could bundle a phone and get the 13MB internet for $4 more per month. Then I transferred to the Tech Supervisor to find out why the pro install is required for the whole home dvr. He said the Cisco boxes have less tolerance for weak signal. They often have to rewire the whole house.
When I called back, ready to give in to the install fee, the next guy told me the $4 increase was actually a 2 year 'agreement'/price lock. I am not too comfortable with them making me have a contract for a price change on my existing service... Plus, I think Redbox, Netflix and Hulu etc are going to squeeze the cable companies into lowering their prices. What do you guys think of the contracts?

I am thinking about exploring my other options: AT&T, Dish and Directtv. I have never had any of these. Do you guys know a current place to compare them? (Most of the threads and webpages seemed rather old...) So far I have checked with Directtv, their similar service would be $62 per month (my Cox bill is $125) and they are saying they don't have tax in OK... Any thoughts on this OT Question?

Yes, I got a 8642 main box and 1642 client. I plugged a network cable into the main box and got no link light. I plugged a network cable into the client box and the link lights lit up and started blinking. It didnt seem like my router assigned it an IP and there was no way to browse to it or anything.

When I got into the diag screen, the "Ethernet Address" field was blank, so it looks like Cox has the ethernet ports locked down or disabled. When I was browsing through the diag screens, the last few screens (there are 37 of them) dealt with media server stuff. Everything pretty much said "N/A", so it seems Cox has that functionality turned off.

I plugged in a USB drive to the USB ports on the front of the boxes. I saw the LEDs on the drive light up, but once again, there was no way to browse to the box that I could figure out.

What I found interesting in the diag menus is the boxes are running on Linux. they have about 10 proccess that are running and 5 that arent. You get all the other stats about RAM usage, HDD Size (500GB), Signal strength, and clients connected.

I do have 7 HD HBO channels now and Outdoor HD, DIY HD, and Discovery Kids Hub HD.. Those are the new channels as part of the plus package.

Two nice features are that you can start a recording from the client boxes. Also the client boxes can watch programs that are in the process of recording.

The main downside is the boxes are slow. Takes a bit to tune channels and button presses have a .5-1 second lag.

In my case, I think I am going to keep Cox internet ($35 for 3MB, but drop their cable (the remainder of my $125 bill, $90). AT&T dsl is my other internet option for $20 1st year and I think $40 after that. Their top speed is 3MB here.
I am going by a local retailer tomorrow to look and see the Dish/Directtv options, Dish is sounding like the winner. (200 channels, HD, DVR, for $46). I have a discrete place in mind to mount the dish...

A lot of STB's run embedded Linux though it's not an open source implementation of it.

The Trio IPG Multi-Room is supposed to support HDD expansion via the eSATA port. And it sort of does....The External eSATA HDD works (plays back) on the Host DVR, only, however the recordings on the Ext eSATA HDD will not play back on the Client STB.

As of Sept. 2011, no one has posted a successful playback on the client from an Ext HDD. Hopefully it is a Bug that can be fixed. Otherwise the Ext HDD is useless as everything will be recorded to the HDD with the most available space, which in most cases up to the first 500GB will be recorded onto the Ext HDD, assuming a 1TB Ext HDD. Once the Ext HDD reaches 500GB then it will swap back and forth between HDDs.

Thanks Bryan... good info. Looks like San Diego is getting the best channel boost.

I've seen your thread discussions on DSLreports as well. Do you know if current 860MHz cablecards can receive the new channels or are they above 860MHz.?

Yep, I went through this a few years ago going to Cox from Dish. I still check and comparison shop every year or so. I too would still be with Dish If I only had 1 or 2 tvs. I have 4 that need all of my programing and another 3 that only need the lower tiers without boxes or cards.

I was happy with Dish. The HD equipment (including the guide and UI) was good and the programming packages were reasonable and fit what I wanted. The killer for me with satellite is the box requirement for each tv.

Since I've been on cable, I've had my own HD DVR boxes (cablecard) which has kept the cost down (cheap CC rental compared to box rental and no DVR fee). With the new Cisco boxes I will have 1 client fee (the host is part of the package) and in essence a DVR fee. I will still have my own cablecard DVR boxes for the other TVs, they just won't get the Plus tier programming (which is only a couple channels that are not already in SD).

I'm ok with the 2 year lock in... That is what gets me down to less than what I am paying now and gets me the Plus system and more programming. I'll check out my options again in a couple of years.

It's the tuner, not the cablecard that can receive those frequencies. The original Tivo series3 will NOT be able to support anything over 860 MHz. The HD and Premiere series DVR units will go over 860 MHz, but Tivo doesn't officially support it.

Thanks... Yes I confused myself when posting. The CC is simply the key to unlock the subscribed programing. I have since confirmed the "new" channels in Tulsa are above 860MHz. It takes a new 1GHz capable box like the Tivo HD/Premier or the Cisco boxes to tune.

On another point, I was told by a Cox trainer that the eSATA and USB ports will be live for expansion. The ethernet will not

Now I need to research MoCA capabilities. With the ethernet port closed for IP streaming, can you still stream via MoCA?

If I add the necessary MoCA adapters/switches to my network, will I be able to see media streamers/servers on my network?

Anyone?

I don't even know what MoCA is... Do you have your setup/theatre posted on here somewhere? Sounds like you have lots of cool toys!

These boxes can only stream MR-DVR content to clients. Running two different MoCA services will be hard as you have to have them running at different frequencies to prevent interference. I think Trio will eventually be able to stream recordings to other devices, but not liveTV.

● Ethernet Connection enables a connection to the home IP LAN for advanced services such as content sharing to the set-top from retail-purchased electronic devices

● Whole Home DVR enables sharing and managing of video services throughout the home to other connected DVRs, set-tops and consumer electronic devices using standards-based connection and security technologies (optional software)

● MoCA Connection (Multi-media over coax) enables an IP LAN connection over coaxial cable, which minimizes the need for new wiring in the home

Personal media content is likely coming to Trio anytime soon, but maybe Cox will consider it. It requires both software and hardware. It uses a gateway but not sure on that. Ethernet will likely stay disabled.

That is too bad... It would be nice to utilize the features and capabilities of the hardware (with optional software).

In my case, what this would enable is:

Streaming (photos and videos) to the Cisco boxes from my WHS media server on my network. I do this now with WD HD Live boxes but it would be nice to have this integrated.

Additionally, streaming from the Cisco to other media players (of course with secure content management) would be nice. I could stream to my theater room.

And, in the future, remote streaming.

Just got the Cisco's installed and my wife and I are enjoying the multi room recordings. The Tulsa Cox tech gave us two new remotes that look just like our old ones.
Love the custom user guide feature and the fact you can delete stations from view.

I am having a problem in getting slow forward to work. When I hit pause then fast forward it goes to 2X FF.

Also, anyone notice that after you are recording a show, you cannot go back in an edit the end times like you could in the older system.

Is this a Trio, Cisco or Cox problem?

On mine, the "Edit Record Options" is grayed out and the box on the right says, "This function is currently unavailable" .. So I guess you cant change the recording options after the show's started.

Since this is a new DVR UI by Cox/Frog Design/NDS, it would seem logical that they would have a forum to provide bug reports and feature requests for inevitable updates. Does anyone know of such a forum by Cox/Frog Design/NDS?
