This thread has been going for a year now and I think I've seen 1 mention of an update that didn't help much. I'm happy as ever with my HR24-500. Find an obscure spot on your roof to put a satellite. No one ever sees mine...

I'll disagree. Maybe in part because I saw many of the issues before and after.

I'd like to see consistent performance and I wish the client boxes would quit failing after 4 months (yet again, the random reboot is happening about every other day on the client box; the uncorrectable frame count is starting to creep up again as it did before).

I'm about ready to ditch it, but the extra channels and more storage keep me onboard for at least a little while longer. Guess another truck roll is warranted.

I should be clear that I have never seen one of these work let alone use one except in the showroom.

I was trying to make an overall point (but didn't type much of it on my phone in the airport) that tv is already an expensive luxury we all use to have live shows with easy operation, no clicking, tweaking or tuning. That's the point of the luxury.
My last Directv bill was Oct 11 for $31.99. It should get up to $65 at the end of 2 years 14 months from now. I am much happier with the function of the dvr, storage space, the price and the extra trick features. I am comparing a single non-whole home Cox Motorola (3416?) to my single HR24-500. So it is not a direct comparison.
Directvs main hurdle is the satellite dish. This hurdle is bad enough that they offer their $100 discount for referrals on both sides. Luckily, found a spot for mine that I pretty well hidden.
To each his own. But I wouldn't have it based on what I have read here and the install fee to plug a box in.

Looks like there was some sort of update in OC for the system. Much snappier performance but no major upgrades or changes in terms of the software. Better, but disappointing...

Everything worked fine for one week.

Numerous outages on the Cox plant end caused major disruptions. The signal strength was very low causing both host and client boxes to continually reboot.

Four days later signal returned to normal. Boxes stopped rebooting.

One problem though, client box could not access DVR list on host box - resulted in error message asking me to contact "customer service".

Tech comes out and swaps out all boxes for a new set. Same problem. He says they have to elevate the problem to Atlanta engineers.

And that's where I stand. I have not had a functional system in 2 weeks now and they keep saying that the problem is under review in Atlanta. Any reason not to cancel services with Cox?

Update: Cox engineers claim everything looks good on their end and suggest a tech comes out again. I'm guessing the field will be pointing fingers at the engineers and the engineers will point fingers at the field techs and I'll never have this resolved. What a piece of garbage. Oh, and the last tech that came out vented about this system as badly as those within this thread. This should be highly embarrassing for Cox.

Quick update: My problem has finally been resolved. The problem was the result of an incompetent technician from weeks prior (imagine that). He had installed a signal filter on the cable line rather than the modem line in the house. Therefore no communication was able to take place between the host and client box. Once the filter was installed on the correct line, everything functioned fine.

So far so good. We'll see how long it lasts.

I can live with it, but the access to the DVR list and starting a recorded show is slow. fast forward/rewind on DVR shows from the client box is slow and can be tricky at times. I wish you could pause, rewind, etc. live programming on the client boxes.

One thing is obvious - these boxes require cable signals to be just about perfect in order to work properly. I had 3 separate techs at my house the last month all complaining as to how difficult the Cox whole home dvr system is to get working because of this.

I forgot to ask a question -

Regarding the interactive services on the main menu, you can watch 6 different channels at one time on small thumbnails, in 3 different categories (sports zone, kids zone and news).

Two main problems that I see with this - First, I don't see where you have an option of altering the channel selection for the 6 channels being shown in each category (am I missing something?). Second, so much of the screen is taken up by other things, the thumbnails appear so small it's tough to make out anything on any of the 6 channels (again, am I missing something here? Can you expand the 6 thumbnails to spread evenly across the entire screen?).
You can't pick which 6 are shown.

What is the Interactive Service Menu? Am I missing something? You can watch 6 channels shown as thumbnails? I only have "Phone Tools" as an option.

Is that a channel you can tune to?
Just curious,

Lon

He's talking about the zone channels.

Oh, thank you, where are they located on the channel lineup? I rarely venture away from my favorites, so forgive my ignorance.

Omaha's are after our music choice channels yours are probably also. They might be a menu option on the whole home dvr, but we don't have it ours are on 990,991, and 992 on regular boxes.
Hum? Found them. But it says I'm not authorized to view zone channels.
What kind of package do you need to watch them? We have HBO, Sports & Entertainment package.

I'm in Orange County, CA and was contemplating getting this Whole Home DVR from Cox. After reading through most of this thread it seems that it's got a lot of problems and might not be worth the trouble.

Does anyone in OC actually recommend it? Have there been any recent updates that show improvements?

Thanks!
Eric

Got this info from a tech who came out to check levels and replace a phonemodem. He seems pretty in the know, and he also has the WHDVR in his home. He wasn't much pleased either, but seemed eager to check out the new firmware update when it rolls.

Just an FYI.

The latest versions of Trio will allow for a 2nd DVR server, if your wallet can handle it.
Any idea if its really coming to tulsa, I havent seen it yet
post #352 of 708
Has anyone tried using an External HDD recently, to see if it will play nicely with the client STBs?

Actually, the tech that was out tonight to look at two different issues (my HSI and swap out the client box again) told me that the upcoming firmware in Tulsa will be able to handle 5 host boxes, and each host can handle five clients. The hosts can then be named and used throughout the house. And hosts can act as clients to draw from other hosts.

Just rec'd this email from COX today in Tulsa:

...we're upgrading the Trio Program Guide

- Capability to add more DVR boxes to your Whole Home network to increase your storage for recordings and the number of shows you can record at one time -- Record up to 10 shows at once!*
- When you add additional DVR's to your Whole Home network,
you can set and manage recordings on any DVR from any receiver

* 5 DVR recorders req to record ten shows at once.

Wow, I can't add that high to see how much a month that would be...

It depends on how you look at it. If you had 2 DVRs & upgraded them both to WHDVR it would be $5. If you are adding a 2nd WHDVR it is around $22. I haven't been in sales in like 2 years now.

Would cox require another pro install?
Well, I already have 2 Trio DVRs. Was there any kind of date/timeframe on the email? I didn't get one.
They don't give out these new boxes to non WH DVR subs do they? 160GB fills up extremely fast, and reading this thread i'm not sure I want to pay more for this WHDVR which appears to have major issues.

Comcast started giving out brand new DCX3400M boxes to non whole home DVR customers, they had 500GB hard drives, I miss that so much.
Does comcast's boxes allow for the whole 500 GB?
