What benefits (or non) does being at or close to sea level give you for plasma displays? I've heard it's associated with buzzing. What the scoop!

Being at sea level brings absolutely ZERO benefit.

Many years ago excessively high altitudes (like 8,000+ feet) were said to cause buzzing but that hasn't been the case for years now. It's a non-issue.

Great! Thank you RandyWalters. It's funny how sales associates will tell you what ever they want just to move products. What a $@&EUR...

It's conceivable that if your set buzzes it would buzz less at sea level, but it depends entirely on why it's buzzing. It certainly won't have a NEGATIVE effect by having it at sea level (unless there's a flood or something obv.).

maybe i should move to the mountains from the flatlands of south jersey...

one of my plasmas buzzes a bit... but i can only really hear it from my seat (about 10 feet away) when there's no other sound at all in the room...

seriously though, as randy pointed out, altitude issues are a thing of the (distant) past...

Wow someone else from South Jersey.

that would be "bee-u-tiful south jersey"...

a bit of background:

plasmas can buzz at high altitude because of lower atmospheric pressure (the pressure in a plasma display is lower than atmosphere and depends on a higher atmospheric pressure to help seal the glass)

the buzzing comes from the power supply

At one time, some plasma manufacturers offered a high altitude version but as pointed out, this does not seem to be an issue these days

and yes, New Jersey is a beautiful state to live in

thanks for the background mark... i knew it used to be an issue, but i never knew the "why" part...

hey!

we make it be REALLY ugly around the turnpike and airports so no one knows how nice it is here... keeps the riff-raff out...

CBS Sunday Morning has done a special on the nicest places in New Jersey: to dispel the common perception that it is all refineries and airports

They filmed part of it in my town

It was supposed to air in October but got bumped

still hoping to see it soon: show starts 9 am Sunday mornings

The common perception is more like hip hop white dudes and girls painted orange rather than oil refineries.. That's not how I view Jersey but with "house wives of NJ" and "Jersey Shore" everywhere you look it's easy to see why Jersey gets a really bad rep. Sorry but that's the perception.

For what it's worth, we were just in Oradell visiting family. It's one of many, small, lovely New Jersey communities that really make it one of the best states in the country. We also visited Hoboken, which is sort of a tiny version of New York, and very much an urban renewal community of the kind popping up in many parts of the country.

I would remind people, however, that if global sea levels rise, being at current sea level will prove unfortunate. Look for property at 30+ feet above sea level as your best defense.
