Lighting scene controller and remote compatability

Thread Starter
I need some help finding a wall switch to control a few dimmers. Right now I have only two ceiling circuits to control, but I may end up with around four or five circuits to control with the addition of rope lighting or table lamps.

I want to be able to set a few scenes such as what would turn on when hitting the main ON when entering the room, A scene for "pause/intermission", A scene for getting some rear room light when watching sports, etc. I probably don't need more than four scenes in total, but the leviton remote dimmer switch (MIR-600) only sets one scene. I also want to initiate the scenes from a programmable remote control (e.g. logitech harmony).

I'd like to retain compatibility with one of the common systems (like x-10 or INSTEON) so that I can use things like plug-in dimmers to dim lamps.

The Insteon wall keypads look like they might do what I want, but the documentation is so dense, I couldn't really tell, and they don't have an IR remote receiver.

This looks like it is closer to what I wanted because it has a built-in IR receiver, but it is discontinued and I am not sure what it really is capable of controlling.

My situation seems so typical. So do you guys use? At first glance, I really didn't understand the programming of the INSTEON keypads. Are they much more compatible and capable than I am giving them credit for?

In my opinion, especially for the price Insteon is the way to go. I'm currently building my second theater and I am using Insteon exclusively again. The instructions aren't that complicated once you have them up and running. The keypad you reference will allow you to do all the scenes you want. You can even get individual keys custom etched/printed with the specific name of the scene you choose. For remote integration, Smarthome now has a separate receiver product that will link into the Insteon switches.

One piece of advice, although the Keypad has a dimmer built-in, the onboard dimmer will only allow one ramp rate, or dimming speed. So all scenes will dim at the same rate for the lights directly connected to the keypad. The solution to this is to have a keypad that is not wired to lights, it is only sending commands to two separate Switchlinc dimmers. This way both circuits can have different dim speeds (slow) for each scene.
