Carbon Nanotube Display Technology?

So whatever happened to the promise of carbon nanotube display technology? Five years ago Motorola was predicting big things for the technology. Here we are, five years later, no $400 40" carbon nanotube displays, and, other than LED backlighting (yawn) and OLED, the talk is still all about "LCD vs. Plasma."

Nothing ever happened. It's pretty unlikely anything ever will happen, but it's reliably certain that "carbon nanotube displays" will not make any impact in the decade ending with 2020.

Sony's FET company built them (R&D samples have been demoed). Sony sold FET to AUO. It's just a matter of getting AUO to start a production line.

FED would be the ideal tech to be used as stop-gap until OLED/TOLED hit the market. But the question is, will AUO invest so much into a display that may have shorer lifespan than LCD, PDP and CRT.

PS: By lifespan, I meant the technology and not operational hours (MTBF)

It doesn't even show up as a SUB point in AUO's capex plan.

Does that imply that AUO's purchase was primarily just to acquire FED IP/Tech for competitive/R&D?

There's still money to be made on the incumbent technology (LCD & Plasma)
That stuff will stick around until the huge capital investments in the fabs and plants is paid off. And maybe even longer since that's just pure cash generation for the manufacturers.

AUO will never start a production line for this. I'm as sure as I can be about that.

One significant reason is that there is nothing resembling production-ready technology.

Also, people will always feel more comfortable when making a highend purchase with proven technology like Plasma and LCD.

On a related note I just read a recent paper discusing carbon nanotubes coated onto the phosphor in a Plasma display panel. Very similar in purpose and design to the KURO which is somewhat similar to FED.

Using CNT in this manner is not a new idea but it seems they have found a practical way to apply this material (ink-jet).

The paper is from Panasonic Corporation.

And by being from Panasonic, which is committed to plasma for the medium term, that sounds a lot more likely than anything from anyone else.

Sounds interesting! What's the publication date of the paper? Will Panasonic be releasing a next gen PDP panel design with next years models (without PLag)?
