WIIMC - WII Media Center - Enhancement Pack

For those who own a WII, a very viable application under "homebrew" is now available to provide media center capabilities (video, music, photos & online media). It provides full file and online media playlist browser support all selectable with the WIImote.

The media files may reside on the WII SD card, or attached USB drive or on network shares via SMB or FTP. Video includes subtitle support, Music includes playlist build and save, and Pictures include slideshow with zoom and music. Onlinemedia support includes http and mms streams, and YouTube, NaviX, and Shoutcast playlists. A PC based server application VLC-Shares is also available which uses VLC to transcode and send HD files as an SD http stream so these computationally intensive videos may also be played.

This does require the installation of "Homebrew" software on the WII, which allows applications other than those "officially" allowed by Nintendo to be installed. "Homebrew" exploits holes in the Nintendo code to provide hooks that these applications use to run correctly under the WII system code.

While all of this information may be found using homebrew and wiimc links, I have developed the "WIIMC Enhancement Pack", a set of enhancements to the released WIIMC application that significantly extends its capabilities.

These extensions come in the form of a patch that must be applied to the latest WIIMC source code and compiled in a PC development environment known as "devkitpro". The resulting wiimc.dol is then copied as a boot.dol to the apps/wiimc-plus folder on the WII sd card or usb device to make the application available on the WII.

I have opened this thread to be an alternate source for information on the "WIIMC Enhancement Pack", due to problems accessing and posting in the official WIIMC forum.

In order to provide the relevant information at the top of this thread I have reserved the first few posts for my future use.

This sounds like a good idea if it promotes the "media player" concept to general masses.

I haven't kept up with the Wii scene, but is the device still locked to NTSC resolution output only?

Yes, the WII is SD only but for HD source videos there is an Apache/EasyPHP server application available on the WIIMC Forum that uses VLC to transcode and stream them in a selectable quality to WIIMC using its http onlinemedia support.

Personally I have found the quality to be excellent if the source is HQ SD.

I have WiiMC and absolutely love it. I hope that the upgrades to it keep coming! I have noticed that when I watch some xvid/divx movies that may not have been transcoded using optimum settings, the audio seems to fluctuate and is not normailized(?). This does not seem noticable when I play on my laptop using divx player and hooked up to TV via hdmi. I love the fact that WIImc lets me cut the cables, close the laptop, and play movies straight from my USB drive. I would just like to see more audio adjustment settings so that I can compensate for les-than-par audio like PC media players have. Is there a workaround already in place for this that I missed? BTW I have tried the other media players for Wii and none compare IMHO.

All the audio is handled by MPlayer which is just used by WIIMC and ported over as it is upgraded, so it is unlikely you will see ant WIIMC initiated changes there.

There is a new version of WiiMC, 1.1.2, does this patch works for it?
