Rented Tron on April 9 - watched it, loved it! Commented on this board that it was the most awesome movie I'd ever seen for bass.
April 10 - one of the Jamo pair fritzed playing music at -20 from reference.

See that's why I try not to talk to Pete over the phone(only through pm). Pete's love of what he does will rub off on you, and before you know it you're ordering another sub. Pete never tries to sell you anything, it's just that he's friendly, knowledgeable and so easy to get along with that when you're done you can't help but order a second or third sub.

Make sure you come back and let us know how you like it with duals. BTW, where is your first one and where are you putting the second one?

That's why I only email Pete. Do I really need another pair.

I was going to get another either way, he just makes it so easy! Going to put it up front to start. In a few weeks will experiment with which side gives best frequency response in multiple seats and move the other one to the back to find best placement for both with omnimic. Pete wanted to see some graphs so I will get some up after I play around for next couple weeks with before and after. I still have a lot of work to do with crappy pre-existing drop ceiling and acousic panels that I hope to knock out by end of summer.

I'd love to see the graphs as well.

Hi, I've had my HSU sub since January-February-ish, and I was listening to music today and noticed, it wasn't making any noise. It is on, it is getting power, the light is green, it is connected to the receiver, but it isnt making any noise

I called a friend, and left him a message saying when he gets time to contact me to bring his subwoofer over, to test my reciever (onkyo nr-tx708) with his subwoofer. Anyone have any suggestions?

I will get some graphs and pics up soon. My laptop battery has failed on me. I am using the old desktop in the basement. I have pics and omnimic setup on laptop. I got both up front now and just finished The Mechanic at -5, it was a lot of fun! Got a Klipsch rc-7 showing up in next couple days so most likely will have laptop up and going by this weekend.

The manual that came with your sub should have a troubleshooting guide. If don't have guide you can access through their website. You can also give them a call and they can help you troubleshoot. Make sure to check all settings and make sure your subwoofer is engaged. You can test another output on receiver besides subwoofer output to see if signal getting to sub. If that doesn't do it you can pull the driver and hook it up to wires going to any of your mains at low level to see if it works. If its good and receiver is good, its the amp.

i hooked it up as the right front channel speaker, and it still doesnt make any sound. I called HSU and left a message (phone technicians must have the holiday off), Hopefully its something that I can fix, so I don't have to send it back in

You took the driver out and hooked it up directly to speaker wire so the amplifier is bypassed and out of the equation? If that is the case it is the driver.

Hey Everyone,

I've been looking around at subs for a while as I'm saving up to purchase my first legit home theater system. From everything I've read, I think that the 15H is going to be my sub of choice. Right now, the only other sub I'm considering is the Rythmik FV15 because it seems like it may have the edge as far as sound quality and extension based on the various reviews and comments that I've read. However, it doesn't seem to have the same amount of tactile feedback as the 15H, which is very important to me!

In looking for a sub, I've been looking for the following attributes:
- Great sound quality
- Blends very well with other speakers (I'm looking at buying from Aperion Audio)
- Has wonderful tactile feedback
- Has extension below 20hz
- Well built and won't bottom out
- Good price for performance
- Looks good

From everything that I've read, the 15H seems to meet all those requirements!

My only concern though is the extension of the sub. I've seen the graphs in this thread that show flat FR down to below 15hz, but I don't have fancy equipment like an sms-1 or anything to eq my sub. Ethan and Adams Shootout on AVS showed the 15H dropping in output as it went below 25hz, but granted, they didn't play around with the settings much. Can anyone speak to my concerns about extension without the use of an outboad sub eq? I'm planning to get a receiver that has MultEQ XT, so I'm assuming that will help the low end a little at least.

Also, feel free to comment on other aspects of the sub (sound quality, tactile feedback, etc.) as I'd love to hear more impressions about these things too!

Thanks in advance for the replies!

I am in much the same boat as you as far as some subwoofer research. There are so many choices out right now and more coming! I currently have the hsu vtf3mk3 and it is a great sub. I have upgradeitis and want to get 2 subs to fill out the room. I also am interested in the rhythmics'. One thing to consider with these is the fact that they use a relatively high mass driver and so do not have great response above 60 hz or so from what i can see on their charts. So this is something to keep in mind as far as what the other speakers are that you will have. For me I use smaller bookshelf speakers and need a higher crossover for them so the ported rhythmiks probably would not work for me.

I am leaning toward 2 vtf15h's or 2 epik empires. I have also been looking at a single svs ultra or seaton submersive, but could only fit one of either of those in the budget.

Sometimes I think I should just get another vtf3.3 as it has been a great sub..

Keep us posted!

FWIW,

I was talking to Pete last week. Don Keele has visited Hsu and found nothing wrong with their Test methods nor Testiing gear.
So what numbers HSU has published using CEA2010 software are accurate.

I am just setting up my new HT system. It consists of Aperion Verus Forte towers for the front L/R, a Verus Grand Center, and Verus Forte satellites for the surrounds (I am considering moving up to the Verus Grand bookshelf for the surrounds).

I just got a VTF-15H to complete the set and I am VERY impressed. The Aperions previously sounded very good with music. But you could tell that they just couldn't dig down into the lower ranges very well when watching blu rays. My room is 25.5" x 17.5" x 8" so it's a lot of volume for a sub-less setup. The Hsu has made the setup perfect in my initial opinion. I have the Hsu located about 3 feet behind and 6 feet to the left of the main listening position (i.e. pretty close). I am running everything through a new Denon 2112ci (with Audyssey MultEQ XT). The bass is very tight and blends in perfectly with the Aperions. As for extension, I can just say that the opening battle in Master and Commander can be felt viscerally with this thing. I don't know how you could bottom it out. I listened to it pretty loudly and didn't notice any distortion. I live on a street of five acre parcels and my next door neighbor could hear the cannon shots while he was working in his garden.

About the only bad thing about the Hsu is its size. This thing is a monster. Think "steamer trunk" huge (not quite but it is gigantic). Fortunately, my wife was accepting of the size. But it's something to consider if you have WAF or other design concerns.

Finally, I also loved the whole purchasing process. Pete was able to answer questions quickly. And once I placed the order, it was shipped within four hours.

Awesome, thanks for posting your thoughts! More and more, it is sounding like the 15H is the way to go! ; )

I get ~103 db with ratshack meter at 16hz in seats. Per correction table (-9) that is 112db @16hz with both. Run eq1 one port q.3 I have them both up front now on each side of center channel. I have no eq on the subs at this time and use a y-split off receiver. I plan to get an eq which has delays so I can move one to the back and optimally setup for seat to seat response, or I will wait and get a receiver with xt32 and move this old receiver up stairs.

Mains unhooked so only subwoofer with 80hz cross.
One sub four seat measurements.

Both subs four seat measurements.

Pics of internals.

I am very happy with what I am getting for bass now. I am going to stick with this pair for a while. It says 1/6 octave smoothing, but the graphs are taken at 1/12 octave smoothing.

Luke - that spl at 16hz is insane! hahaha

I'm looking forward to hearing them, and then of course cursing my room!!!!

The inside of that box looks cavernous! Like some sort of deep well optical illusion!

I agree Archea, Luke I gotta hear your setup again sometime now that you have duals in that awesome room.

Though did you notice that S&V republished their VTF-15 specs and the quoted numbers are now some 7db lower than the original review ..

TEST BENCH (revised April 21, 2011)

Bass Output (CEA-2010 Standard)
Ultra-low bass (20-31.5 Hz): 113.9 dB
Low bass (40-63 Hz): 118.9 dB

The CEA-2010 bass output measurements shown here are corrected from the originals, which I later found were flawed because my NTi MiniSPL self-powered measurement microphone started performing far outside its calibrated sensitivity.

Bass Output (CEA-2010 Standard)
Ultra-low bass (20-31.5 Hz): 120.4 dB
Low bass (40-63 Hz): 125.6 dB

That's one heck of an error, and the new numbers are much closer to AH now (actually, they're considerably lower in the 40 to 63 range).

Without a truly independent reliable party taking consistent measurements and using some sort of sub as a proxy to test that the equipment is delivering repeatable results over time, these numbers border on useless. Mind you, CEA-2010 numbers themselves (i.e., without several other measurements like compression) aren't overly meaningful period.
Whoah! So what's HSU's official position on this?
I hadn't checked back on that review, kudos to S&V for catching and making the correction.
I do know that in "sealed" mode it rolls off much sooner than in one port open which I would expect. Actually those numbers don't surprise me in "sealed" mode.
As for DB levels I can only check via my SMS to 85db.

You'll be able to hear them yourself next week.

I assume that's a retorical question.
You'd have to contact HSU for the official position.

Shortly after the AH review they said they'd be remeasuring the sub. I'd have hoped they'd done so by now. However, if someone from HSU is reading this, ummmm...what's up?

B.B. noted:

"Output at 50 and 63 Hz might have been higher but was tamped down by the subwoofer's internal limiter."

Sounds like a job for Ricci ....

Can't wait for the Epik Empire numbers to show up and the Rythmik's. Should be interesting to watch the data-bass grow. Though I'm sure Ricci is already having second thoughts given the amount of work involved in putting the data together and getting someone to post it!

I wish somebody was a lot closer to Ricci to loan him a 15H.
I'm way too far from him.
