In the last 2 years I upgraded my speakers 3 times and my sub twice. I now run dual 15h in a 9.2 setup and I don't see myself upgrading for a very long time. I am very happy with Hsu and I'm sure you will be too. To get anything comparable to the 15h you are going to spend a lot more and the difference will be marginal at best unless you want to try your hand at DIY. You say you are 95% certain that you want the 15h so you must have been reading around and it sounds like it fits your budget, go for it! My space is twice that so in your room it will literally "bring the house down" lol!

Edit* if you don't mind a little cosmetic damage call Hsu and see if they have a B or C stock to save some more cash. My second 15h was a C-stock and its still just as awesome and where I have it no one will ever see the small damage. I was planning on repairing it because I do similar work for a living, but when I got it, it was really no big deal so I left it like it was.

You are correct, for years I have done a lot of reading on both SVS and Hsu. I am not quite sure I want to tinker around with a DIY option, though that seems to be a current trend I am seeing these days.

I actually did inquire about their B-stock, and they told me they usually go so fast they don't list them on their site. I will be placing an order next week and will see what they have when I do. The 15H looks like a beast. One of my colleagues went down the route of SVS and got a cylinder sub, and was trying to convince me to go that route.

The 15H is a beast and a half.

Either direction I doubt you will be disappointed and between certain models it becomes splitting hairs with that said I got the VTF-15H and never looked back its been more sub than I have ever had and continues to impress me constantly while being the tightest sub for music that I have owned.
^^ One of the reasons I like the 15H is the tweak-ability. From the reviews I have read, it seems like everyone uses EQ1 with 1 port plugged. Do you use different settings for music/movies?
I have had my my VTF15 for almost a year now and I am very pleased with my purchase. My settings are both ports open, Eq2, Q control below .5 and volume at the 9 O'clock position.
EQ1 with 1 port open here with Q control at 9 o'clock.....for now.

Well I went from a Bose system with an old kenwood sub years ago until I started really reading AVS. I was still of the mind frame and budget that small speakers could get the job done so I went to an Energy Take classic 5.1 set. I really liked the sound that came came from them, but soon realized that I could do better. Vanns had a killer sale on the Energy CF-70s and CC-10 center and I bought that with the Takes as surround and got an Outlaw plus. Then I wanted a fuller sound in the rear and got a nice deal on CB-10s and I was really happy, but found the Connisour series to be a little too bright for music. Great for jazz and light music, but I listen to a lot of heavier music.

At this time I was all into AVS and learning everything I could take in. I knew I really liked the Energy sound and they were blowing these speakers out at prices that were just too good to pass up on. I mean $2000 retail towers going for $300. This is when I knew I wanted the RC series which have a much more warm sound and were the last "real" Energy speakers made before they were bought out by Klipsch who was later bought out by Audiovox. Vanns had a contract to remanufacture the discontinued RC series and I jumped on a 5.0 set of them later finding RC-Rs which were never brought back and the rest is history.

So I guess I am an Energy guy, but the cards all just fell into place on time and budget and I always liked their sound. Energy today is nothing compared to Energy of years ago. The Connissour, Reference Connissour and Veritas lines have all been discontinued and now they are putting out overpriced crappy subs and sound bars. Such is the same with Athena, Jamo and Mirage who were all bought out by Audiovox. Sad.

I don't, I like to go as low as possible and EQ 1, one port open Q=0.7 does everything I need it to do. In my room I find I loose too much below 20hz to go to two ports open. Granted my subs are not properly placed in the optimal spots, but this is my living room and I'm sure my wife would hate to have one sub in the foyer and the other in the hall, but it still works very well. Just personal preference.

These must be popular! I placed my order earlier today and was greeted by the curtious Hsu staff that the VTF-15 was temporarily out of stock and more would be arriving in about one week. I also have been doing a lot of reading on AVS and chose the Hsu. It seems like not much can touch this monster, especially in the price range and the support of this thread has helped out a lot. Thank you everyone and I am happy to join the family (well....soon anyways).

Man saints what a speaker audyssey . I ended up with tektons which I love. As far as settings for the beast I much prefer sealed eq1 and .5. I know I lose a little bottom end but the bass is so much smoother and tight.

Welcome to the fam. Wow, sold out? Looks like the Rosenut is in stock though.

I think it's the best way I could have spent $2K in my home theater.

I run EQ1, 1 port open, Q 0.5. Then have a 5db boost in the AVR after Audyssey has run. I like the sub a little hot. My gain is around 845.

Same here. EQ1, 1 port open, Q 0.5. The volume is a hair above 9 0'clock. I used to have the Q at .7, but sounded too "loose", for lack of a better word. Love this thing too death. In the subway scene in Skyfall you could feel the floor shake up through the couch. Had me grinning from ear to ear. biggrin.gif

Skyfall did have some good LFE. I agree, I can even handle 0.3, but 0.7 is too muddy.

That is whats so great about this sub it can be tailored to the individuals needs or wants.

I did mine at 845 to achieve a -3db on audyssey. I did then bump it too +1.5db since I as well like it hot. I still have it on the Dr's recommendations of EQ 2, 0.3 q control with 2 ports open. I am in a smaller room. I do like it although I have thought about experimenting as of recent. I would say my optimal sound would be the one that gives the best, deepest kick drum punch. What do you think? This last week I went to a concert at Keller auditorium in Portland, OR. The bands subs were amazing! The kick drum literally moved right through you with serious power but tight as well. Anyway thanks fellow bass heads

Also I'm sure a few of you have your sub away from your tv stand with all your equipment and power/surge protector center. What did you guys buy for your sub in the corner?

Power protection is a good point. I have never had my sub on any kind of protection circuit, just like my amps. The amps were recommended to be plugged directly into a wall socket by the manufacturer. What does Hsu officially recommend?

Virtually every amp manufacturer will say the same. If you do choose to a surge protector is OK, as it doesn't restrict current. But most modern amps have those, and any other necessary line filtering, built in.

I actually like the idea of having some kind of surge protection for an amp/subwoofer, and my area is susceptible to power loss and brownouts. However, my amps and sub have been running directly to a wall outlet for nearly a decade without issue. Though I would have no issue putting these devices on some kind of protection as the rest of my gear is if it were manufacturer recommended (or required for warranty support).

I have a pair of these:

You can see then just above the subs in the pics from my signature.

I am torn on which finish to get. Most photos I have come across are usually in the satin finish. Has anyone seen the rosenut and satin black finish in "the flesh"? What were your thoughts on both? I would normally prefer the rosenut, but from the pics online the satin appears better finished.

I haven't seen the black in person. I do own a pair in rosenut. which look really nice, furniturish if you follow me. I allowed my budget to include the extra cost, I know my wife likes the rosenut over black speakers of any type.

My VTF is plugged into a Isobar Ultra 4000. I actually have two and have my devices split between them on two different plugs.

I own the black version as the rest of my HT gear is black. If my room had some sort of hardwood flooring or matching paint colors then I might have gone with the Rosenut. Then again that flooring would probably bring a different set if issues to the table.

I think the rosenut would add a distinctive touch to you home theater.
