wrinklefree

Can you measure the radius they used on the corners.

Also the height from the surface to the bottom of the front face plate and the exact width and height of the face plate would be nice. Thanks if you can help on this.

I am starting to think the only difference between the two will be modest picture quality improvements with SD-DVD’s and perhaps slightly better sound from the 93...?
The only thing really holding me back is the upconversion improvement on a 9’ screen that I know the Oppo will give me.
The question is, how much of an improvement…

The Panasonic 85 is a pretty mediocre upconverter. I don't care what anyone says. You have a 9' screen...don't even consider the Panasonic. The reviews are using MUCH smaller displays than that if they're claiming it's upconversion is good - either that or VERY well mastered SD DVDs.

Here's a link to a little shootout I did on my own which included the Panasonic 85. I used 2 identical copies of several discs in 2 machines at a time so that I could easily swap back and forth for comparison. While I did the tests with a few movies, I used American Beauty for most of the comparisons, as it is a sufficiently bad transfer with plenty of flaws. The ABT chip (Oppo 83, Denon receiver) did very well and only the Pioneer 320 (same internals as 23fd) looked anywhere near as good with the same material.

As a side note, I normally watch SD DVD at 1/2x zoom on my 106" screen as I hate soft pictures. After getting rid of my Oppo 83, I now zoom down on the projector (motorized zoom allows me to go down to around 84") but kind of miss the 1/2x zoom offered by the Oppo. I have a 93 on the way however.

Mini upconversion shootout including ABT chip in Denon receiver (same as Oppo 83), Panasonic 85, Oppo BDP-80, Pioneer 320, Denon 1610:

They obviously did not process the orders in the sequence in which they were submitted (I ordered at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, and mine is "Approved-Ready for Fulfillment"). Perhaps it is based on the date of registration for notification. I registered pretty late. Or maybe it's based on age, youngest first.

There is a reason why I put the firmware revision at the beginning of the statement. This current firmware is not supporting "AVCHD" over NTFS formatted drives. It was working properly several revisions previously, but become "broke" in the firmware that is currently being installed.

i know that oppo is good at fixing stuff, but this is something that would have to be fixed fairly quickly or i am calling oppo first thing in the morning and cancelling my order
Without breaking NDA, I can say that you should not worry about this. This is a short term error which will be addressed in the future. There is also a work around (see my reply to Hyrax below).

Remove or rename the AVCHD folder. Now you can browse to the BDMV folder then Streams. Enjoy.

This is the interim fix until they get AVCHD working again over NFTS. It was working in previous firmwares, but the current firmware unfortunately does not support it.

Here is response I got...

Mario,

We will be sending out players based on two priorities: shipping and order placement. If you payed for expedited shipping, we will of course get the player shipped out sooner to you. If you are placed an order at the very beginning when ordering first began, then you get an earlier shipping priority.

Makes sense and seems fair. Sounds like demand versus supply.

mariob33, I guess my $81.25 for shipping at 15:04 Thursday, November 18, 2010 didn't impress them much.
Still at "Approved-Ready for Fulfillment"

There's a difference between expedited (FedEx Next Day) and expensive (shipping to Canada). As has been shown already, OPPO isn't making a profit on the shipping. People need to be patient.

International does not count as "expedited". Expedited shipping would mean that you payed a higher shipping rate in order to have the player shipped with a service that would arrive sooner than a cheaper rate. For OPPO this would mean being a domestic United States customer and choosing FedEx 3-Day, 2-Day, or Overnight express shipping. Local pickups would also be considered "express" as they can claim the players immediately.

This is why I never use Visa to purchase a hot item. Use MC instead.

Where are you located? Expedited shipping only cost me an extra $30 shipped all the way to massachussetts and I already have a tracking number. As a matter of fact expecting delivery tomorrow.

When you say "these units" do you mean the pre-release versions or the BDP-93 will not be shipped internationally (ever)?

Pre-release units. Official release should not have these shipping restrictions.
Are these coming in the retail final product packaging?

Ordered mine Thursday as soon as i got the email, and my status got changed to shipped yesterday, meaning its going out tomorrow as promised in the bold red writing that said shipping on monday, november 22nd. Tracking number is available, but nothing is showing yet, since first scans will be tomorrow

People that got there's shipped early just got lucky, or most paid for expedited shipping. Hopefully should have mine by wednesday, since im only 2 shipping days from there warehouse.

Yes. The player is full retail. The only difference between the Pre-Release and the Official Release will be the firmware on the player.
it will be locked at some point

in the new thread we ask members not to post shipping or order status details: it is for owners with units in hand

Thanks

This cannot be quite accurate, however. Others have reported using standard shipping, having a later order date than mine, and yet have moved beyond the "Approved-Ready for Fulfillment" stage," which I have not.

I think I see the problem, though. I had missed the little legend on the Order Status page that says, "Note: each time you click 'View Order Status' button, you are moved one place back in the queue."

I'm going over to the other thread to watch there. Maybe something will turn up.

Mine just changed to Status: In Packing. I ordered it last Thursday at 5:13 Pacific.

Were you standing or sitting when you ordered?

yah, I paid the 50 bucks or whatever for 2 day shipping, must be that's why they got mine out so fast. Does make sense, I think they know there were a lot of us picking the expedited shipping in hopes of getting it BEFORE the holiday weekend.

Has the navigation of network shared content been given any sort of overhaul/advancement over the primitive navigation of the 83?

My order is now "shipped". Hopefully I'll receive it this week.

I'm ordering this to replace my 83, which is fantastic. But, I want the 3D capability.

Are many of you ordering this new unit mainly for the 3D upgrade/capability?

Yep.. I replaced my 83 for 3d. Now if only the projectors could start shipping. I have my eye on the JVC rs60 or the DPI MVision 3D
