1080p 3D Projector Questions

Thread Starter
I have been looking these forums up and down and the topics I find always seem to sidetrack to a point so I haven't found enough advice on what I am looking for so any help is helpful and thank you in advance.

My situation:

I am almost done finishing my basement and making it into a media room complete with my consoles (PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii) and my cable box (Scientific Atlanta 8300HD an HD DVR by Charter)).

I have dimmable lighting and a drop ceiling installed and I want a great quality projector to go in and give me a nice screen size and great graphics.

My Desires:

3D That Currently Works or will work with my PS3 and Xbox 360

Room is 14 ft long so throw isn't a concern but will be mounted through drop ceiling most likely.

1080p - mainly to keep up with the times.

--------
I am coming from a Samsung 1080p 60hz 40" so That is what I am used to for picture quality. Bought 5 years ago.

I have seen a few by Optoma like the HD66, HD20, and GT720 but am not sure of compatibility with PS3 3D currently but seems like the 3D-XL may resolve this.

I am looking to spend no more than $1500.

Thank you for any input and recommendations.

sorry to say but for 1080p 3d you need another 0 on your budget.

okay thanks a lot.

Yep - if you're OK with 720p it's *believed* that the optoma 3d-xl will fix the compatibility (not confirmed until someone has one in hand ), but 1080p 3d is very rare and expensive still. There were a few recently announced that are no longer in the 5-digit price range, but still well above 1500 (least I know of is the ~$5k jvc model).

1080p 3D = $8000-$10,000 and there are probably only a couple manufactures that have developed them. sony has one coming out by end of Nov. but it has a MSRP of about $10k

i dont understand why it costs so much compared to 720p 3D, but i do know the prices of them will start falling in a year or two when more companies are creating them and there is more competition.

personally, if you rather have image quality, i would spend $1000-1500 on a 1080p projector than $700 for a 720p 3D projector since there isn't a lot of content in 3D.

get a 1080p projector now and wait a year or two then upgrade to a 3D projector when there is more content and prices have dropped (this is the route i ended up picking)..

But to answer a question you didn't exactly ask, a 720p 3D projector can be had for $600 - $700, and to that you add a $400 converter box (3D-XL to be released in January) plus a couple pair of DLP Link glasses at $80 each, and you have 3D projection compatible with Blu-Ray and PS3 for under $1500. Just it is 720p not 1080p.

For the same money you could get a very good 1080p projector, just not 3D.

I found some good information on 720p 3d projectors in this topic.

Is there a 1080p projector that can do 3D at lower resolution (720p?)? Or is that a stupid question...

You can do 1080p 3d for about 2,000 with a dual projector setup(if you already have a htpc/laptop)....thats what I'm in the middle of building right now with 2 refurbed Epson 1080ub's. The beauty of a dual pj setup is that you can use cheap $2 glasses, has higher contrast, no ghosting, brighter, 1080p detail(better looking than the theater 3d).

For more info search for username Blackshark....he put together an awesome dual pj setup earlier this year.

The downside of my understanding of a dual projector setup is you have to have a silver screen, and they don't produce as good of an image as a regular screen for 2d content; correct?

Sounds complicated... not something I would take on...

No answers to my earlier querry (#8, above), I presume thats a "no"? No such beast exists...?

Not at the 1500 price range haha. Why don't you just buy a 720p then.

I believe you are correct as far as concerning current tech. However, there should be some nice 5d paint formulations coming out in the near future if you want to DIY a screen.

Also, someone mentioned no ghosting... ghosting is low on a good polarized dual projector setup (with the proper screen surface), but not nearly as low as with good shutter glasses.

Am torn between 1080p (no 3D) and the lower 720p resolution for most of my viewing on a 100" screen.
I am sure many would like to have both...

mid-year 1080p 3d was in the 10k+ range. Now it drops to the $5k (with rumors of $3500-range street prices) with the JVC. I'm betting it'll be in the $2000 range in another year. So if you really want 1080p and 3d for an inexpensive projector just give it some time. Shouldn't be too long now.

I'm sticking with my 720 until I can get 3d+1080p+led light source>=1500lumens for under $2000. I figure that'll be a few years out at least

I confirm it, as I saw the 3D-XL, with PS3 and HD67 playing real blu-ray 3D, a few days ago at my local optoma office. I plan to buy a GT720 in a few days...
