I bought my 554 about a month ago and the update just hit my tv last night. After reading all the posts on this, I looked very closely at the VIZIO logo light after the update was complete. I can definately say that the brightness of the light did not change. It functioned just like it always did. It is very bright when you first turn the TV on. Then, about midway through the V logo on the screen, the VIZIO logo begins to dim down. Nothing changed on this, folks.

And my Vizio logo light, which used to dim down nicely, now stays on bright all the time. In answer to your question, Redgtxdi, no, it doesn't seem to dim at all now. Point is, even if it did, it is much, much brighter than it was before. The constant brightness is now the same as it was (before the update) just after initial startup, before the dimming took place.

Well I'd love to see for myself what brightness level my Vizio logo is but I still don't have the FW update. I bought my 554 the last week of July 2011, I've called Vizio support 4x, done 3 different online support chats, made sure my t.v. is registered, still no update. The last CSR had me check the system info menu all the way to the bottom to make sure it's REG=YES, which it is. The CSR was the most rehearsed/practiced re: FW inquiries so far. She confirmed what several others have; as byzantine as it sounds, the FW queue is ordinal by serial # range.
554 pings Vizio's NOC (sp?) server.
NOC server compares my SN# to current FW SN# 'range.'
If my 554's SN# in range, handshake + FW update.
If my 554 SN# not in 'range,' no update.
She said "no more than 2,000-4,000 t.v. SN#'s are allowed in range at a time," so as not to "overwhelm" the server.
[I so wanted to say, 'yer kidding me with this server constraint, right?" but i didn't ]
Like the rest, she was adamant; "even if I wanted to," support techs cannot "push individual updates."
On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being best, I'd say Vizio's handling of the FW update is a 0.5. If Vizio is that server constrained, send the update on a USB drive. Oh yeah - the USB drives aren't enabled without the update. Right.
My new Yamaha AVR wirelessly updated FW minutes out of the box. My PS3 has (another) FW update waiting... reminds me periodically. My HD Roku just did a FW update on demand.
This is my 1st Vizio product and my only serious rant is FW update. I read a lot about the 554 before purchasing, waited for price to bottom out, got a great deal, knew a FW update was pending. I just didn't think it would take MONTHS to roll it out. That's ridiculous.
My only other complaint is 554's remote. Don't care so much about no backlighting but I was a bit taken aback at the lack of build quality. The slider mechanism feels particularly flimsy and cheap. I'm going to be surprised if we don't see posts re: slider mechanism breaking. I don't mind - I'm already using a universal remote.
Otherwise, I'm loving my 554. Watching US OPEN tennis as I type this. 2D content is so crisp, such depth, it looks 3D. Last night, Andy Roddick rocketed a 140 mph serve at Jack Sock, but that little yellow ball stayed crystal clear. Whipping racquet and player movement, no ghosting. The tennis ended early, so I turned off all the lights and watched Avatar on an HD cable channel. Even at 1080i, truly stunning. The 'flying' scenes were particularly jaw dropping. Several friends & family have commented on how amazing the picture is.
