Yep, after I turned my set off and back on again the brightness was back. So unless Vizio fixes that with a future FW I guess I'm stuck with it. I'm not going to play with the Ambient Light Sensor every time I turn on the set. How could they mess that up and why don't they just make it user selectable in the menu. On/Off/Dim

I have normally/regularly kept the Ambient Light Sensor set on High (equivalent to back-light of 50). As a result my Logo stays dim before & after the update. Just an FYI.

I really hope that Vizio will introduce a 60-65 inch model! This tv is perfect in every way for MY needs, except I want at least a 60". I currently have a 50", so 55" just isn't big enough to upgrade to.

Not only did the logo properly dim again, I think it's dimmer and less obtrusive then before the update.

Yes, keeping the Ambient Light Sensor on any setting other than off does activate the dimming...I suppose it's a small price to pay and I'll be keeping mine on low as the brightness shift is minimal. I'd be interested to know if the people who said they did not experience this issue at all, had their ALS setting on something other than "off".

...and I'm glad to hear from other posters that 3D is improved with the new FW....makes that coupon code for the glasses seem even more appealing! Anyone know how long vizio will keep that promo going?

How did you determine that the Ambient Light Sensor on High is equivalent to 50 on the backlight. I have my backlight set at 55 and when I turn on the ALS to high the picture gets really bright. I like it like that but I thought it was running the backlight on high level and would shorten the life of the backlight.

VIZIO does make the XVT3D650SV that you can find out more at http://www.vizio.com/xvt3d650sv.html

Same here - the logo brightness reverts with every power cycle. Going back into the ambient light menu and scrolling through makes the logo dim again.

eheh.

I'm using a new Yamaha RX-V671 AVR w/ my 554. I happily confirm ARC is now enabled on HDMI 1 - following XP2.7.9.1 FW upgrade + a Yamaha tech support call.

When I first enabled HDMI/ARC/CEC on yammy, I lost all audio on the t.v. Very odd. Yammy tech had me check t.v. speakers were set to 'off,' b/c this is a known issue with Samsung models. This didn't help.

Then we explored Vizio's CEC SETTINGS sub-menu of TV SETTINGS.

"CEC Funtion" must be set to ON. (I had this one right)
"System Audio Control" must also be set to ON. (I had it off)

Friendly Yamaha tech agreed setting Vizio T.V. "System Audio Control" to 'on' seems counter-intuitive, but that sure did the trick.

Unplugged TOSLINK cable, started up Netflix, yammy communicating with Vizio, switches to AV4 (Yamaha ARC default) and awesome.

I was (apparently) the 1st ARC support call to Yamaha on the 671/554 combo, Yamaha now has the correct config settings.

The new update has ruined my picture. Is there a way to go back to the old version, or do I have to call Vizio?

I use Movie mode for my viewing & originally calibrated using Disney WoW with a Backlight setting of 50. Eyeballing or ABing scenes revealed ALS off with Backlighting @ 50 looked the same as ALS on High which disables Backlight manual settings. At least to my eyes in Movie mode with Brightness @50 and Contrast @ 52.

Received the update 09-12-11 and noticed that VIZIO logo is brighter. But after playing with Smart Dim and Ambient Light Sensor, it will dim in brightness until the set is rebooted. Then it will be bright again.

Another thing I noticed. After the upgrade, my settings were not changed. So, I thought I would turn on Smart Dim and Ambient Light Sensor while using my original settings to see if there would be any improvements. The only thing I noticed was that during the day the picture got progressively worse in brightness and color quality. So, I shut off Smart Dim and Ambient Light Sensor. No improvement even though I was still using my original settings. Left the TV on for a few more hours without any improvement.

Later rebooted and my picture quality was back to normal (my settings). All is well so far. I guess I won't be using the Smart Dim nor the Ambient Light Sensor settings.

That is NOT the same thing. It uses Edge lit LED NOT Full array LED. BIG difference! I will just be patient and keep waiting. I wish more full array local dimming sets were being made. Unfortunately edge lit is becoming the most common because they can be thinner. It is beyond me why a tv that is 1.5" is more desirable than a tv that is 2.5"!!!! The "average" consumer puts their tv priorities on things other than picture quality, often ridiculous things. I am only concerned with the picture quality.

Edge lit is thinner and CHEAPER to produce. Most people care more for fashion (size & shape) than picture quality and want as cheap a price as possible. Unfortunately the reason Vizio is number one in LCD sales is price, not the great XVT back lit LED sets it produces as its top of the line models.

Vizio relentlessly pursued the classic price leader/market penetration strategy to become #1 - and achieve low-cost production economies of scale. I expect we'll see more upscale products from them in the future, but for now we get an amazing feature set for 1/2 the price of comparable models. In my humble opinion, no other 55" LED television (2D or 3D) comes close to the 554 feature set and quality.

I don't know if it's anything to do with the firmware upgrade - but I streamed HD version of the film "Network,' last night, and had only one modest buffering pause. Netflix and Vudu worked great out of the box, but Amazon has been very spotty. Way better performance.

Have you tried resettting the TV? Here's Vizio's instructions as to how:

Power off TV
Unplug TV from outlet
Press and hold in the power button on the TV for 30 seconds (while it is unplugged from the wall)
Release the power button
Plug in the TV into a different outlet
Power the TV back on
There is also a factory reset option in your menu under the SETUP section. It will say either "reset all settings" or "system reset".

Couldn't find a setup section with a system reset option, but I got it fixed with the first method (plugged it into the same outlet, however). Thank you greatly for the advice!

I have a VIZIO XVT3D474SV and could have sworn it played my NHL 12 PS3 game in 1080p until it asked me the dreaded do you want to play in 3d question. Has anybody found a solution to get 1080p back when I play playstation 3 games?

Its 1080p in the dashboard but it switches to 720p when I play games...Or am I crazy and has it always done this?

EDIT~~~~~~~
Ok, I just found out its not the TV...is the PS3...the PS3 really doesn't go 1080native....cheap consoles! I wanna drag my big gaming rig into my bedroom now, this tv is tooooo beautiful!

Sorry I cut that info from Vizio's website. The reset TV Settings is under the Help submenu. Glad the power down reset worked on your problem.

(Received Firmware Update about 3 - 4 weeks ago)

About three or four days ago I turned the tv on, pushed the VIA button and there was an apps update. After the update for the apps I had to reinstall and delete needed and not needed apps, not a problem I am happy to see a company update their products, but guess what.... there's a problem.

Now everytime I turn the tv off and then on the VIA interface says its installing apps updates. Over and over again I must install my apps and delete the ones I do not want. This is happening everytime I turn the tv off. And no I am not unplugging it from the wall, I am simply just pushing the power button off on the remote.

My question... is any else having this same issue?

I've seen some mention a setting to adjust the brightness of the logo. Can someone let me know where this is in the settings?

That's the problem, there is no setting and after the FW upgrade the brightness stays on bright unless you have the Ambient Light Sensor turned on.

What make and model is your 50" ? I say go for the 55, the picture quality & black level of my 47" are drop dead spectacular and 55 should give you a nice real estate improvement.

Based on the lack of responses, I'd say this is rare.
1. Maybe you are deleting a "critical " Widget that is causing this reload. If I were you, I'd make sure not to delete the VIA media, My Profile, Widget Gallery & Hardware Setup.
2. If #1 doesn't work, as a last option do a complete Reboot (unplug from the wall & hold down the power button on the set for 30 secs before plugging back in). Write down all your customized setting beforehand...

Sony 50E2000 LCD RPTV. I realize that a 55" would be bigger, my friend has a 55" Samsung w/ local dimming, but I really want at least a 60". I sit about 12-13 ft away. I am in no hurry to upgrade since my set still works fine. Seeing all these huge incredible looking sets just gives me the upgrade itch! I will wait until the perfect 60" comes around.

Has anyone called Vizio about the Logo not dimming after the FW update with the Ambient Light Sensor off? Maybe if they get enough calls on it they will fix it with a future FW update. It is a little annoying to have it at full brightness especially in the evening.

John - you can get the logo dimmed again. It's a procedure previously posted but the command is deep in the menu tree so here's how to find ambient light sensor:

go to: t.v. settings - picture - more - advanced picture - and the last option 'ambient light sensor.'

cycle through each choice in ambient light sensor setting: low medium high and then cycle back to off. exit t.v. settings.

It takes about 2 minutes, but the logo fully dims - i think it's dimmer then before the FW update.
