cycle through each choice in ambient light sensor setting: low medium high and then cycle back to off. exit t.v. settings.

It takes about 2 minutes, but the logo fully dims - i think it's dimmer then before the FW update.

Actually, if you just turn it on and then off it works too but it goes back to the full brightness after the set is turned off and back on again. I can't find a way to keep the dimming feature on without having the ALS turned on all the time.

You didn't need it turned on before the FW update.

First let me state that this is only concerning my XVT3D554SV, I see other people are using this forum to discuss issues with other models. Having owned/ or operated other Vizio gernerations of LCD tv the menu from one model to the next can greatly differ.....

My TV would not reset by the directions provided on an earlier page.
Luckily I was able to fix my apps reset issue by simply using the intigrated reset under the Help Menu.

I also want to point out that there is only ON/OFF controls for the Ambient Light, there is not high, med, low.

I hope this input has helped some.

Strange... my XVT3D554SV has low med and high Ambient Light Sensor settings. It has been my understanding all US sold XVT3Dxx4SV models (42'', 47" & 55") use the same firmware & have the same menus.

Mine also has low, med, and high.

You must have this confused with one of you other sets. The 554 has Low, Med & High Ambient Light Settings.

4 settings 4 sure!

Is it more important to calibrate this set to 2.2 gamma or to pluge patterns due to the smart dimming?

When calibrating according to pluge I recieve a gamma of 1.8.

Yup, the OP is confused - the 554 Ambient Light Sensor has low-med-hi and off settings.

Guess the OP was playing with Sizes & Colors under advanced edit. A little gaudy for my tastes....

Why is this like...THE ONLY TV that does not let you adjust any real settings while in 3D(contrast/brightness/depth etc.)? If they were going to update ANYTHING, let me adjust my picture for god sake. Could care less about all the apps, every other device in my entertainment center has all that crap already. Other than that this is a pretty great tv.

That would be great. I'm not familiar with other 3D so I don't know what adjustments they offer but I wish you could at least adjust the brightness and contrast. But, I don't see Vizio doing this since this TV and technology is no longer being produced.

This TV must not have gone over well, they even have the list price at $1699.00, way below the 553.

But I like it, as well as my 553. I have only used the 3D twice but I mainly bought it for the 2D picture, the glossy screen really gives it depth.

Just wondering... Does your 554 have the startup audio crackling issue as the 553 has?

I'm loving my 554 too... Amazon actually has it listed now for more than what i paid last summer, and they don't offer the two pairs of glasses for $25 anymore. They haven't even finished pushing the new firmware update to all owners, so hopefully there is support for us down the road.

No, I don't have any crackling problem with the 554. The only problem I have and I'm not sure what is causing it, occasionally the screen will flicker for a split second like the backlight dimmed. It's like in some homes the lights would flicker when the fridge would start or something that drew a lot of power. I know it's not that. I'm trying to see if it happens when watching a disc to see if maybe it's my directv box.

I just don't see why they can't enable the sliders that exist in a firmware update...it's not like they're not there, you just can't move them, or I don't know perhaps some sort of service settings that can be unlocked? For a TV that was supposed to be a "flagship" model at the time, there is a serious lack of user end settings when it comes to the 3D picture. The avatar 3D picture looks amazing, but everything else just seems to need a little tweaking, just wish I didn't have to resort to the basic adjustment settings on my Panasonic 310

I have not experienced any issues with the 554 and audio difficulties either.

Is anyone having problems with volume fluctuations. My 554 goes from quite dialog to loud background sound. I have the Surround Sound turned off as well as the TruVolume (which I thought was the purpose of this option). My 553 plays fine, both playing off DirecTV using HDMI input.

I don't know if there is anything on the market that would stabalize the volume over HDMI but I'm getting a little annoyed with it. If anyone knows of such an item I would appreciate the info. As long as it's not too expensive.

Thanks.

2 questions:

1. Can backlighting only be changed in certain modes? For some reason it is not accessible to me. I can see it, but I can't arrow to it.

2. Anyone have a recommendation for a wall mount? I like the kind that you can pull off the wall, I guess they'd be swiveling, so you can access the wires without pulling it down.

Thanks.

Thanks. I'll check, but thought I already have that off. Will definitely look again though.

I like Kanto. They are far less expensive than others and available at Costco.com. They have a sale on the type you are asking for as we speak.

Having TruVolume On should help especially with 5.1 Dolby Digital programs which have a wide dynamic range (the issue you referenced). You may have a similar audio setting on your DirectTV box. I haven't noticed a wide dynamic range issue when I shutoff my AVR late at night & run the TV's speakers. Wide dynamic range is why I shut the AVR off to avoid waking others. I have audio set to flat & have TruVolume On & SRS Surround On or Off. Are you using a soundbar? They can also enhance the Dynamic range a little like an AVR.

No, I'm not using a Sound Bar. There aren't any settings on the DirecTV Box that I can find. When you have SRS turned on it disables the Audio Mode that you say you have it set to Flat. I have my 553 and 554 set the same and the 553 seems pretty steady but not the 554.

I have been gone from DirctTv for a while now. But if you go to Menu and look around, there are some settings for Dolby Sound, etc. Play with them until you find the one you need.

There is only one setting Dolby Digital On/Off that's it. But it doesn't seem to make any difference if I have it either way. I have it currently on so I'll try turning it off again and see if it helps.

CORRECT SRS Surround disables flat audio, but SRS TruVolume does not. As I noted in my earlier post I sometimes use Surround & sometimes not. TruVolume may help with some dynamic compression but it's really designed to keep constant volume between broadcasts ie loud commercials. If you can't adjust or disable Dolby digital on your set top box, I'd suggest you go into the Audio settings & adjust the Equalizer Settings upping the middle settings where conversations occur & decreasing the others as needed. Good luck. Setting audio to one's taste is as much of a pain as setting video.

Thanks, I'll give that a try and play around with the equalizer settings.

Thanks for all replies.

Anyone know what physical stores still carry the either version in 55 inch model?

Try CompUSA. I saw one on display at the downtown Fort Lauderdale store this week.

Our costco (Portland area) had a blow out sale on them where they gave away two pair of the 3D glasses for free. Now they are completely out of both the 553 and 554 and have been for several weeks now. I think that was it for that series. Now the 2012 models will likely show up around black friday timeframe.
