OLED is fine, but at this point I'm not looking downstream. I've only had my 554 for a year, and before that had a Sony CRT 32" set, so I'm still in "wow, what improvement" land. There'll always be something new and probably better around the corner in the tech world, but right now I'm enjoying what I have.

Man, that sucks!
But if you are past the warranty period you're SOL. You're gonna have to pay to fix it yourself.
2 remote possibilities are
1. You bought it on a credit card that adds a year of extended warranty.
2. Your homeowners insurance might cover a power surge or lightning strike, less your deductible.
Good Luck

Did you go thru the full power reset? It is more than just unplugging the TV.
To perform a power cycle. To do this follow the steps below:

1- Power off TV

2- Unplug TV from outlet

3- Press and hold in the power button on the TV for 30 seconds (while it is unplugged from the wall)

4- Release the power button

5- Plug in the TV into a different outlet

6- Power the TV back on.

This got me thinking. I come up on 1 year (totally problem-free) in about two weeks. Does anyone know if Sam's (where I got the set) offers an extended warranty, and if so, can you get it after buying the set?

Sams offers an extended warranty but I'm almost positive that it has to be purchased within 30 days of buying the set.

At this point your best bet is buying it from Vizio. But the longer you have the set the more it costs. I think that it can be purchased up to 1 year after purchase of the tv. Go to their website, you can price it out.

Thanks for the information.
I just got off the phone with Vizio customer service to ask about extended warranties. Incidently, the guy I spoke with couldn't have been nicer, and was well informed about the warranties.

Burnerbum is correct about the extended warranties. Vizio offers them (for up to 4 yrs), they have be purchased within 1 year of purchase of the set, and the price goes up the closer you get to the 1 year cutoff. It doesn't go up tremendously, however.

For those who may be interested, the extended warranty cost on my 554 (and I'll hit the 1 year mark in only 2 weeks) is as follows (in round numbers):

1 yr: $114 and can do 3 payments of $40 each
2 yr: $228 and can do 3 payments of $78
3 yr: $289 and can do 3 payments of $98
4 yr: $350 and can do 3 payments of $118

So $114 per year during the first 2 years, $60 per year thereafter.

Check with the Dell credit card. Call them and just ask them if they add on a year of warranty. Many cards do, and most peeps never know!

I believe that your tv was in the process of getting the software update. The tv will go black for awhile when it getting the update. If you interrupt and unplug the tv, it will stay black for a long time. Just plug it back in and let it get the update. It will take longer this time. This is what happen to my tv also.

I really hope your right but the tv led light just keeps flashing I even unplugged the Ethernet Cord no Luck I'm gonna plug everything back up and just let it go through its process see if it comes back on before i posted here i did let it blink for about thirty minutes, but tech should be out next week hopefully can get this fixed before super bowl. Go New England! T v is only a year old seems like they made the tv to go out right outside of the one year warranty that would be something else if they did.

Forget about that possibility. It would be a disaster for the company. If Vizio TVs - or any brand - got a reputation for crashing after one year, noone would buy them.

Out of the box pic looks clean to my untrained eye. Started out with Cnet's settings, pic looked too green on some programming (BD looked good). Readjusted using a combination of many of the settings recommended on this forum and am REALLY impressed with the PQ. Blacks are as good as my Pioneer plasma. Haven't experienced any blooming, even tested it on the infamous Inception safe scene.

I'm good with the 3D image. Didn't buy this set for 3D, I really don't care. Watched Thor and Megamind in 3D and was impressed by both. Some crosstalk, but I won't be watching 3D movies much.

My father-in-law has the LG 47LW5300 bundle so I had a chance to compare this weekend. 2D content is WAY better on the Vizio, no comparison. 3D content is better on his passive LG (again, I don't care about 3D).

Thankfully, no RVR after a month of use. Received latest upgrade after setting the set up, powering down, then powering back up. No issues with wireless configuration, Netflix dowloads are quick. I have a PS3, but haven't tried any games on this set yet, so can't speak to gaming lag.

This site, and the forums, will naturally attract users that have had issues. If you read through the 553 forum, you likely will not buy this, or any Vizio, TV. But in my experience....no RVR, wireless configured without any issues, no blooming, some mild 3D crosstalk, GREAT PQ, easy set-up, great value.

Really pleased with this purchase, especially considering what I paid and the amount of features / technology this set offers vs. other (Sony) much much more expensive competitors.

What is RVR I have seen mentioned in a few posts? (Sorry if I missed it somewhere)

Just curious

Random Vizio Reboot.
Some posters have noted this with their units. I have owned mine for about 5 months or so and have only seen this happen twice. It is so infrequent that it does not bother me at all. The positive aspects of the 554 far outweigh this minor issue.

The Giants winning The Supe on my Vizio was scintillating, fascinating and titillating.
Great PQ, Great Victory - It don't get no betta Boyz!
That's how I dooz it playerz!

I'm glad to report the following:

Owned since 01-05-11

4740 hours minimal estimate on viewing time (12 hours per day)

2 Firmware upgrades.

No random reboots.

No Remote or Wi-Fi issues.

Being such a confirmed Projector Head, deciding on buy this TV (...at the more premium price in 1-11) was a difficult decision until I saw the image. No regrets. At all. I hope there are many unspoken owners out there who have shared this level of performance and dependability.

I am in the same camp as you, no reboots that weren't upgrade related and couldn't be happier(474 here). I'd say maybe 6 hrs a day so half your hours. If people saw how good the 2D picture is on these sets and put the hatred for vizio aside, they'd be impressed and upset at the same time, upset they spent much much more on their other brands! I'd love to put my 474 up against any other back-lit local dimming set from another maker, minus a Sharp Elite.

Thing is the Sharp Elite has less then 100 zones more then the 554,worse color and ISN'T a IPS panel.. Plus cost "thousands" more..... My next set prob will be a Elite though because of its bigger "SIZES"...... The 554 setup right more then holds its own vs the Elite's.
(minus the size factor)

I haven't read up much on them but for that much $$, they don't have IPS panels?!?! Umm wow, just wow

I recieved my replacement set in December. Flickering screen problem. The 2nd set that I have now still has the same problem. Every once in a while the screen will flicker brighter for a second.

I couldn't believe I would get another bad set so I have been trying many different connections to try and figure it out. I have both my DirecTV recivers connected to the TV with seperate HDMI connections. BluRay Player and my Popcornhour. But no matter what I try it still happens.

To make me really believe that it is the TV is I was watching the TV with PIP on and when the screen flickered so did the PIP. If it was the transmission or input the PIP should have not displayed this.

It's not real bad, maybe once or twice during a movie but still I don't think it should happen and will it effect the life of the set.

Is anyone else displaying this type of flickering in their set. I haven't called Vizio back yet but my warranty expires the end of June and I want to make sure I have a reliable set long before that date hits.

Any suggestions or comments are appreciated.

I should also mention I have never seen this on my 553 or my 42" XVT.

Flickering screen is common when game mode is enabled...
I turn it on only with the 360..I get flickers with it enabled with PS3 and sometimes cable. So try turning it off and see if that helps.

Game mode is off, I don't use it for any type of Games. What does it do anyway. I could try it with it on and see what happens.

Thanks

Forget it, with Game Mode On the picture is jerky.

Wow, interesting

Wonder if we can figure out how to go back to the old firmware.

Try doing a complete reset. Don't enter any info to connect it to the Internet.
Just pass that part of the setup.
See if that does that.
Well I got blinking when game mode was enabled for my PS3 and my comcast moto hdmi cable box. No blinking with it on with the 360...
I did notice 2 RVR's since the new update though

Firmware is strange stuff. Like you I got screen flickers when watching SAT TV after about 30 minutes of use when Game Mode was enabled in settings. In the week or two prior to getting the version 5 firmware, I got 2 or 3 RVRs. They stopped once I got the update. It's like the TV is polling the internet for something...

Another idea on screen flicker, could it be a smooth motion setting or a conflict between the two PIP settings since its using two receivers possibly at the same time? Those are things I don't use.

I still love my Vizio set. Most manufacturers outsource their parts & a lot of the manufacturing. Look at the iPhone made in China by Foxconn with parts sourced from Sony, Samsung etc. Apple is just the brains behind the total configuration & the firmware.
Just to chime in here; I have owned my XVT3D554 since 3/2011. This TV looked astonishing - better than anything else I considered at the time, (plus the pricing was less than the compared Samsungs as well). On display/out of the box displayed a great pic, but after using the video calibration disc, (received with my Oppo player) the pic looks absolutely amazing. I haven't tried 3D - haven't really had that itch yet. But even in 2D only, this TV makes my HT "first class".

Since calibration is done per each input/source, I sort of copied the settings after adjustment to both HDMI inputs - and tweaked from there, (DirecTv DVR).

In the last year - I did have Vizio replace a board after 4 months due to having a WLAN network connection failure. But it totally fixed the issue. I frequently stream VuDu in their HDX mode, (or Amazon & Netflix) over my wireless LAN without a hitch.

NOW THE ISSUE HERE that catches my attention is mention of "display flicker". What I noticed just this past week, (while watching DTV) was 2 variations of this.

1. Entire screen completely black for only about a half a second, then returns. It is done perfectly, as if it is a scene change. It does it every few minutes but not regular at same interval. My 4 yr. old granddaughter noticed it and could recognize it after knowing I was looking for it. It was noticed on 2 diff days. This latest siting was noted during a recorded program, (but NOT repeatable via replay of same scenes). It's not a show-stopper, merely an annoyance because I fear it is a genuine problem that I must get fixed. Since then, I have not had time to logically troubleshoot it using all sources, etc. - but I logged it with Vizio CS cuz the original warranty time is nearing its end.

2. Flickering. I also noticed (same time/show) some backlight/brightness flickering. a few times - some minor and 1 a bit more obvious. But I have not yet noted this via streaming or disc play - both of which I have done considerable viewing of.

So being a background follower here at AVS, I am documenting this as my 2 cents. This forum is the most respectable of its kind, (IMHO). Folks here seem to have technical interest and backgrounds - AND appreciate fine AV equipment!
