I figured I would let it update and if there are any problems I would find them while it's still under warranty. Even though I don't use the Widgets, I may later on so it's better to find out if there are problems now.

I have seen a number of folks report problems after updating to the latest. Keep a close watch for the problems posted over the last few pages. Good luck and let us know what happens.

I have had 3 reboots, 2 with the original FW and 1 with the new FW. One more and Vizio will be getting a call. I never had any reboots prior to the repair. My 553 has never rebooted itself. These TVs have beautiful pictures on them but they sure are buggy.

I agree. I just love the picture. In fact, I was a die-hard matte screen kinda guy before this TV. Now I am convinced that glossy is the way to go. I never understood what people meant when they said that the glossy screens just "pop" more. Now I understand.

I have not updated the firmware since I bought the TV over 6 months ago. As a result (but unsure if it is related) I can only recall 2 reboots. In six months, this just doesn't bother me - especially given what I paid for my 554. Keep us posted, Burner. I am hoping for the best for ya. You and I seem to be the last of the original gang that used to frequent this string.

Is the new firmware good to go?

Some people don't like it, reporting random reboots & frame rate issues. Based on postings most of those few reporting problems have had the sets repaired. It's hard to say it was their hardware that was the issue or the firmware. I've had the version 5 firmware since Dec. with no problems and the set was purchased when production first started. Since these TVs do a lot of internal processing, I expect to have to reboot (unplug) every few months.

I get a single random reboot every couple of months & an occasional frame stutter (once a month or so) since I don't use the smooth motion feature. I'm inclined to think the firmware is fine, since I've gotten less reboots with version 5. However, if you don't use the widgets or have a problem why update?

Dumb question. Sorry.

How do you find out what firmware version you are using?

Thanks,

Burt

I bought a 42-inch NON-3D version of this (i.e. XVT423SV) last week, and am waiting like an impatient child for it (UPS keeps delaying the delivery date, which should be later in the week). I purchased this online, without seeing it, but basing my purchase on the stellar reviews. I assume the non-3D version is Discontinued, so I'm trying to find stores that carry the xvt3d's, and am having a very difficult time (I checked Sears, Target, Walmart, Costco, etc.). Anyone know which brick and mortar stores should be carrying this? I'm in SoCal, if that makes any difference.

Just slightly off-topic, but I find it annoying when people just think that because something is a Vizio, that it isn't good. I called Paul's TV here in L.A. and asked if they carried the Vizio XVT3D line, and the woman practically sounded like I was asking her if they carried Westinghouse.

The XVT3D models aren't currently being produced. All the current 3D Vizio's are edgelit LEDs. Of course that could change as new models get introduced.

Cool, thanks man. I actually talked to a Vizio rep on the phone, and he told me that the XVD3D's actually are being produced, and that even the XVT3SV's aren't DQ'd yet, just that they want to focus on their edge-lits right now. Doesn't make sense to me, but I guess the average consumer doesn't care about Back-lit vs Edge-lit.

People are more interested in Sleek and Thin than the picture quality. It will be interesting to see, as the LEDs weaken, how even the picture will be.

I talked to Vizio too and was told that they would be coming out with some new sets this August but didn't say what.

I contacted Vizio tech support this weekend, and chatted with someone who promised to relay my comments to their engineering department. Among the things we discussed was the possibility of adding controls for 3D depth, as well as compatibility with Bluetooth glasses as well as IR glasses from other manufacturers. Incidentally, I was informed that the Sensio service is to be rolled out first on their Cinemawide 3D set later this year, with other models to follow.

YUP. This time they didnt torture me with month of fruitless home visits. Just sent out a new TV, (same exact model). So, as long as this is the end of the issue I'm happy.

Good to know the problem is resolved Whitey. As an FYI, I'd recommend using a good surge protector on the Vizio, since it really is a computer with delicate software inside.

Did they send out a recertified set? After replacing all the boards in my set I'm still getting the flicker in the picture. It's like the local dimming gets confused. Sometimes when it changes to a dark scene, the scene will appear and then I can see the whole picture darken. On light screens it does the opposite and the picture will lighten up. I guess I'm going to have to call back.

I din't understand the problems with this set, my 553 has worked perfect from the start.

Yeah, sounds like your Smart Dimming is an issue. Are you also using the Ambient Light Sensor? If so try it on low or off. It goes without saying to use the latest firmware, especially since your set has a problem with the current version. Good luck!

I have mine off and i have no issues.smile.gif

I have the Local Dimming and Ambient Light Sensor turned off and I'm still having the problem. It happened while watching a BR yesterday so it's not the input or my Sat box.

Quick question for the experts: I've been running this TV for almost a year and a half and generally I love it. Can you confirm that DTS passthrough (from HDMI to optical) is *not* supported? I have been using HDMI-to-optical passthrough with AC3 quite successfully, but recently I got a new media streamer (RaspberryPi) and none of my DTS media plays correctly in this configuration. Unfortunately this streamer doesn't have optical out, so I can't go straight to receiver (my receiver doesn't have HDMI switching).

I looked in the settings and noticed that DTS is not listed in audio, and I looked at the TV's specs which don't mention DTS. So far I'm inclined to believe it's not supported, but I thought I would check to confirm because I don't see it stated definitively either way.

Thanks in advance!
Aaron

Damn, my Yahoo widgets no longer work. They freeze when clicked on (trying to load via the net). I was forced to update my internet gateway address (thanks for IPV6, AT&T). Rebooting the TV by unplugging for 30 seconds causes the set to request a new IP address on the wireless network & the set passes the Internet connection test at good speed. I'm thinking the yahoo widgets have an internal DNS setting that wasn't reset to reflect my new wireless configuration. All my other wireless devices, PCs, PS3, tablets etc have no problems accessing the interwebs. Any ideas?

Maybe I can uninstall the Yahoo app somehow without doing a full factory reset. That's a pain if you have customized gray scale & other settings.mad.gif
post #1559 of 1665
Turns out you can reset all the Yahoo widgets, which fixed my DNS problem. You go into the Yahoo profile widget & select System Settings then Restore Factory settings.

This will delete all the widgets you have installed or modified. I then did a reboot (unplug TV for 30 seconds). The TV reboot took a lot longer, about 60 seconds. Invoking VIA (the button) causes Yahoo to update the factory default widgets to the latest versions (about 60 seconds). Then I had to reinitialize or recreate all my widget accounts. Now all my widgets work.

ALSO THIS JUST FACTORY RESETS THE WIDGETS & THEIR ACCOUNTS. ALL OTHER TV SETTINGS ARE NOT AFFECTED.

I just discovered a new issue concerning the BACKLIGHT SETTING.

Yesterday (7-7-2012) I finally got around to installing an HTPC via the HDMI connection. As I was tweaking the Picture Settings for that connection (HDMI-3/DVI), I noticed that no matter what I tried, I cannot access the Backlight setting. The same goes for all other Inputs. Navigating with the arrow buttons skips over it, even in the Custom Picture Mode. I have firmware version: VIZIO_XP5.0.1.0-S. I got that update on 3/16/2012, but at that time, I had no need to adjust any picture settings. Is this the latest firmware?

Does anyone else have this issue with the Backlight setting? I keep a log of all the weird things this TV does, taped to the back., and for the most part, this has been great TV. But not being able to change the backlight setting is a pretty big issue (at least for me.)

I know that having certain settings on in the Advanced Picture menu can affect the main picture settings, but I don't think that's the case... unless I'm missing something.

Please help!
