shut it off and forget about it.

Sounds simple enough, although it does bug me that it doesn't act right. Things like that make me paranoid that something else could crop up down the line. Although it is nice to know it's not just my set that is doing it.

Maybe they will put out a firmware update that will fix it. There was a firmware update for the 553 that supposedly improved Game Mode and cut the input lag in half.

I'm gathering that there have not been any 554 firmware updates yet...

Also - any ideas about the tv forcing itself into 3D Picture Mode and not letting me into any other modes when I have said NO to playing the game in 3D?

As far as the 1080p goes the game says on the box "Video output in Full HD 1080p requires an HDMI cable and a 1080p native display with an HDMI input supporting HDCP". I think I am meeting all of the requirements... that is assuming the HDMI inputs support HDCP.

I'd really like to get this figured out as COD Black Ops in 720p seems to look noticably bad on this tv. Either that or it just looks bad on this tv period :/

As I recall it would output 1080p on my previous Sony NX800 and Z5100s.

COD BLOPS says 1080p on my tv....

Im still concerned about the occasional loss of signal when switching resolutions... Especially with the PS3 and Cable tv. PS3 1080p-720p and vice versa.

Id like to know if everyone is getting these issues!?

Yes, sort of. Sometimes when I change from HD to SD channel I loose the sound (just get a scraching sound) and the screen goes to snow, then the picture will come in for a couple of seconds and then back to the no sound/snow. If I switch between channels a couple of times it will go away and display properly. This is with DirecTV.

The resolution should stay at 1080p, and changing HDMI inputs (including the Side input) did not help. At that point the tv is also going into a Picture Mode called 3D. The tv will not let me select the Picture Mode field at all and i cannot change it to any other Picture Mode until i exit the game."

Problem solved after a Vizio Chat Support session...

I had to set Stereoscopic 3D Settings to 'No' in the COD Black Ops main Options menu. Houston, we have 1080p niceness

The tech i spoke to had no idea what was happening with Game Mode bugging out. He emailed their engineering department and told me he would email me once he got an answer.

so this type of error doesn't=defective set?

Since there are so many having HDMI handshake problems, I would say no, not defective just a poor HDMI design. I don't know if it's hardware or software related. If software, they could probably fix this with a FW update.

I would like to mention also, that I had a Samsung 650 that had occasional handshake problems too. I changed cables and tried everything other than having DirecTV give me a new box. It doesn't happen that frequently for me not to recommend the Vizio. My brother has the same set and he hasn't mentioned having this problem. He has DirecTV also.

It seems that this set is rather low on Vizio's radar as far as firmware updates are concerned (or anything else for that matter). I've had a Vizio XVT473SV (non-3D) since Oct 29, 2010, and there have been at least 2 f/w updates on that one.

Companies issue firmware updates to correct problems or add features. I haven't read of the 554 having as many problems as its earlier cousin the 553 (random reboots, VIA screen freezes & game lag). I am however waiting for an upgrade to activate the USB ports. Remember this model has only been out since late Nov. The 553 came out in May of 2010.

Has anyone tried 120hz input from an HTPC, as this is one feature I'd really like to have, but finding a TV that supports it or even getting that information from the companies is difficult at best.

Thanks,
ERIC

Ok...now I'm getting more and more nervous about the 3D on this tv. Am I incorrect in thinking this can do sequential, full HD 3D? (i.e. BluRay3d or whatever you want to call it). If not...that presents a huge problem for me as I want something thats obsolete before I even got it. :/

This set does BluRay 3D just fine. We have the BluRay 3D movie IMAX Deep Sea 3D, and it plays perfectly, and looks awesome (we play blurays on a PS3).

I believe that it is the new 65" Vizio that uses passive 3D glasses that drops the resolution for 3D. The XVT3D554SV will do 3D at full 1080p, and it looks great!
What format does it use for that? I borrowed a friends PS3 today and have it until Sunday - but it seems you can't rent a 3D BluRay freaking ANYWHERE. We did try BlackOps in 3d. Was ok, but there was some serious ghosting - and it actually screwed my head up bad within a few minutes

So...now...how to decide if I like it or not. hehe...

Also, is the senseo 3d the 'full 1080p hd' or....just some other mode the tv recognizes that isn't on the 3d popup?

I don't know what 3D mode it uses. When it starts to play, a box pops up that says "3D Material Detected. Do you want to watch in 3D?" (or something like that...) I select "Yes", and it plays in 3D. When I hit Info, it just says 1080p, 3D, Full. If I press the 3D button on the remote, the only options are 3D or 2D.

It is different then when I watch 3D on my Comcast box. When watching on Comcast, I have to choose TB or SBS, or Sensio. And I see those options when I press the 3D button on the remote.

When I watch a bluray 3D, the different 3D modes are not selectable.

i saw a couple of previews in 3d on vudu they looked good but the gaming in 3d like 2k11 and killzone wasnt to shaby hurt my eyes had to set the 3d to 50 on killzone. Stardust looks great so do some of the movies preview off vudu, so if some content looks good and others dont would that make the problem be the content and not the tv? Also can anyone help with calibration that they use i just use the vivid and baskeball settings seems fine to me but if i can make it better i would love to. and one more thing did they just put this tv on the back burner i see all types of reviews for the 65 inch passive but still none on this tv any comparisons with both sets. and what are you guys viewing distance when watching 3d and type of cords u guys use i have mine connected to ps3 with regular high speed cord i got years ago when i had my sammy was thinking about replacing the cord with a vizio 3d cord from walmart will that make a diff.

my uverse box is connected with a sony 3d cord thanks in advance this forum is the ish had to get that out there

I think this is the exact question that has kept me from returning the TV thus far. Some content I watch looks great, others don't. Hell, I was watching 3net on DirecTV last night with some shots of birds standing on some very dark rocks with the ocean set in the background. So basically a dark foreground with a very light background. One shot showed some very obvious ghosting, but then it switched to another angle showing other birds with the same exact foreground rocks and background ocean, but absolutely no ghosting was present. It was basically the same exact shot as far as content but the difference in ghosting was night and day.

Sometimes ghosting is there, sometimes not. It confuses the hell out of me.

So, we rented Shrek Forever After tonight just to try something from FIOS other than what I had on my HTPC. Just so people know, it's just SBS format.

Anyway, what I've noticed is that light on dark ghosts over the dark if there's enough distance between the two images (i.e. far in the front or far in the back of the '3D' image). Aside from that, it was actually pretty good 3d overall. Avatar, again SBS format, also looked good with the biggest issues being things at the extreme 'far' or 'close' planes.

Just want to pass along some info from the manual for the Oppo BluRay player I just got. In a section dealing with connecting to a receiver with HDMI input/output, it states that while HDMI is a wonderful thing, you need to be aware that HDMI is an evolving standard, and there can be compatability issues. For example, some receivers offer HDMI ports solely for video switching. To play multi-channel audio for all formats, the receiver must support HDMI v1.1 or later. For Blu-Ray, a receiver that supports HDMI v1.3 with decoding capability for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio is preferred. Etc. etc.

The main point here is the statement that HDMI is an evolving standard, and there can be compatability issues. "Handshake" problems may have nothing to do with "poor design" or "defective systems." It's just that, apparently at this time, there is HDMI, and then there is HDMI. A lot of variation exists. Different manufacturers and different build dates with different HDMI standards can contribute to compatability issues, and apparently these issues are not uncommon.

I bought this set after purchasing a Vizio XVT423SV for my bedroom. I am very happy with the image quality, but I have one major complaint: there is no HuluPlus app. I spoke to a Vizio rep about this, and she told me that Vizio does not offer HuluPlus on its 3D sets. She could not confirm whether HuluPlus would be added via a firmware update. Anyone have any insight on this?

I don't use Hulu myself, but I'd suggest trying the app to see if the Hulu widget updates after you enter your data.

Here's why.... Yahoo updates their VIA widget apps as necessary. As you may know Amazon announced today (2/22/11) that Prime members can download many Video on Demand movies & TV shows for free. As a result the Widget was updated today to reflect that feature for Prime members.

just a general question to all who have tested the 3d what are you guys opinions and what is some of the best content you guys have tried gaming and movies

I'm confused, are you saying there is a Hulu app in the XVT3D554SV widget gallery?
There is no Hulu app -- not plain ole Hulu or HuluPlus. Nada. I feel slighted.

My bad. VIA on the 554 has Vudu not Hulu. Sorry
post #415 of 1635
I've only viewed the 3D from Directv's 3D channels, n3d & 3net.
Always see ghosting on every thing I've viewed. Especially in foreground items. Kind of disappointing...

What's the quality of 3D Blurays? Anyone seen any?

I have watched 6 3D Blu-Rays (from both an Oppo BDP-93 and PS3), and all of them exhibit lots of ghosting and crosstalk. I have also watched a few 3D programs on D**, and the ghosting/crosstalk is equally bad as well. I will be returning this Vizio as soon as my Panny plasma gets here.

Personally, I wouldn't buy any LCD if I wanted 3D viewing. The Panasonic plasmas are definately the way to go if you want 3D. For 2D viewing, these Vizios are really good for the price.

I'm starting to agree with this. This set is my very first foray into 3D television and it really surprises me that what I'm seeing is considered "ok" for pushing as a major feature of next-gen TV's. I had thought about taking my TV back, but I'm guessing I'll find this issue on any LCD I purchase (not interested in a plasma), so I'll probably just keep it. The 2D picture is just too good and the 3D mode was always going to be a "bragging" feature for me anyway, to be used occasionally but nowhere near often.

At least I've been able to find the occasional piece of content that looks absolutely fantastic, but they are few and far between. If you want to see some quality 3D gaming, I'd suggest trying out the Killzone 3 single-player demo. The color palette there works very well and ghosting is minimized enough throughout to get a really great depth effect. The full game is a completely different story though. I'd also recommend the Jim Carrey Christmas movie trailer in the VUDU app on the PS3. It looks great. The scene at the end with the snowflake landing on his nose makes a great spot to pause and completely wow all of your friends.

I thought this model had a better 2d picture than the vt25 and the vt25 had slightly better 3d...
