Ok so here's the scoop on my progress...
I don't have exciting pics because not much is happening other than installing equipment in a totally makeshift rack, mounting some speakers, and testing the projector at different distances (with the projector on a box equal in height to the bottom of the screen).Projector Throw Distance
The aisle between my first and second rows (parallel to the screen) runs about 13.5' - 16.5' from the screen (ballpark). Since I have low ceiling height, mounting the projector within that range is not an option.
Mounting over the first row seats is also not a great option because my projector is big...34 inches from the back to the tip of the anamorphic lens. So that means my lens is only about 10.5' from the screen. Not a good option.
Soooo...17' is about the closest I will be mounting. This causes a potential issue with a seat underneath it, but I guess mounting the projector somewhere other than the corner of the room is more important than having a seat underneath it.
If it is a problem, I think I will do two loveseats in the back row (like Damelon) so the armrests will be underneath the projector.
So I set up the projector at the farthest possible distance last night and watched about 5 min of Avatar. In short, it was shocking. Shockingly awesome.
I was impressed with that projector when it was in my living room on a beige wall. In the HT, on a white screen, surrounded by black, it was nothing short of WHOA.
In a REALLY good way. The scene with the space ship and all the stars and planets in the background was unreal.
So for now my plan is to take the farthest possible throw distance and then move the projector up about 6-8" just to be safe and give me a little wiggle room for adjustments.
I should also note that this throw distance stuff was NOT an oversight in the plans done by Dennis. He would have specified proper placement of the projector and accounted for seats etc. if I had made up my mind on which projector I was going to purchase when we did the plans.
The plans were done with a higher end projector and longer throw distance in mind, but then my air conditioner exploded and some other stuff came up and I decided that I just wasn't prepared to drop that kind of coin on a projector at that point. And I'm completely satisfied with the Runco LS-5 (that's an understatement - it's awesome) - the picture absolutely blows me away. But some day I will step up to one of the big boy units with major horsepower.Audio
I don't have much to report here yet other than that it's going to be awesome. The room is still basically all hard surfaces other than the seats and area behind the screen, but I am convinced that it's going to be great. The DTS-10 works. This basically means you have great audio, right? I mean it feels like you're getting punched in the chest with sound...does it get any better?
I haven't started with Audyssey or REW yet - I am waiting on that until I get the projector on the ceiling and my internet connections set up as there are some firmware updates I need to install on some of my equipment.
