James138,
They are supposed to be placed at ear level and to the side and slightly behind the listener. That is a general guideline. In actual practice it may not be possible to place them in this precise location. Moving them a little forward or backward of the listener is fine. If they are mounted 6 feet high, obviously that is not ear height while seated. So try to point them down toward the seated position if you can. What the experts say is try to have the Tweeter portion of the speaker at ear height.
Good luck and try not to over think it. Plug them in and listen, move them around to find the best location within your constraints.

My current speaker stands put the tweeters just at the listeners ear level but I was looking at new stands that might be about 6" higher. My question is what is the best height for speakers on a stand that will be placed relatively close to the listener?
