QUESTION: Can I mount my center channel about a foot off the ground and have it angled up to the audience's ears without it completely ruining the experience? Alternatively, can I mount the center channel at approximately 13 feet high and have it angled down at the audience?
I know that in situations where your screen is not acoustically permeable that the center channel should be mounted above or below the screen and angled towards the audience. From what I've gathered, so long as the angle is 0ยบ the only thing that matters is distance to the ears. Here's where it gets complicated...
I have vaulted ceilings with a ceiling fan in the way so I could not ceiling mount my short-throw projector to throw a 106" (diagonal) image. Instead I found a wall-mounted solution with a 67" extension arm to take it's place. Keeps it out of the way of the ceiling fan and still gives me the throw I need for my pj.
Suffice to say with the screen's housing mounted at 100" and the wall-mount for the pj above that, top mounting isn't really viable unless I put it at 130+" high which would be almost 20 feet to the ears if you work out the vector.
Now, I also have the Xbox 360 Kinect sensor and it needs to be at least a foot or two away from any speaker in order for it's noise-cancellation magic to work properly while at the same time needs to be mounted at either the 2-3 ft height or 5-6 ft height - basically above or below your typical not-wall mounted set-top display.
In my case, the only logical place to mount it was at 2 ft. above the ground, giving me a foot of space between it and the "bleed over" from the projector lighting the screen.
See, I'm not stupid in terms of video considerations but I think I've backed myself into a corner acoustically speaking...
