Hi Guys,
I am currently investigating building a small batch of Piano Black Horizons. The larger the production run the better the pricing will be so if interested, please give us a call and have Dina place you on our interest list.
Thanks!

The woofers in the Sierra-1 and Sierra Towers look the same, but they are different. The dedicated midrange driver is unique to the Tower.

Was hoping some Sierra Tower owners might have have had a similar shortlist to what I'm presently considering. I know Ascend has the 30 day guarantee, but that wouldn't fully apply in my case since I'll be needing a custom height Horizon center.
I'm looking at a 5 speaker set-up (Rythmik or PSA sub will be added) for 80% TV/movies/games and 20% music. For the Ascends I'm considering Sierra Towers, Horizon center (front 3 with RAAL upgrade) and Sierra-1 surrounds. In the next two weeks I'll be able to locally audition the two other systems I am considering:
1. KEF R-series - R500 fronts, R600c center, R100 surrounds
2. Monitor audio - GX-100 fronts, GX-150 center, GX-50 surrounds
My preference was for towers up front, but have heard such great things about Monitor's Gold line that I'd accept the bookshelf fronts if the overall system was better.
Since all three of the above systems are roughly the same price, has anyone else compared these options? Thanks for any comments.

I am in the market for towers speakers, and I auditioned the R700s. They were excellent, probably my favorites so far along with Focal 826v. Anyway, I am planning to demo the Ascend Towers with Raal soon, mid to late January. I may try to get the local dealer to let me bring home his floor demo pair so I can compare side by side. So, my answer is no, I have not heard them side to side, but maybe soon.
The dealer raved about the R300 bookshelves, BTW. Since you are mostly movies, less music, you might consider those, much like you are with the MA line. Might save you some dough. The should play well low enough to blend with a good sub.

I've heard the R300 and R700 in the same room, side by side. The R300 has a warmer presentation than the R700. Although I didn't listen to them next to the KEFs, I think Tower is more than worthy in terms of a comparison.Originally Posted by NewHTbuyer

Also, if you read mattcpt's posts in this thread, he listened the Focal 836W's, and wrote up some notes compared to the Tower as well.

Thanks for the reply. I actually was considering the R300 bookshelves. I down-selected to the R500 by figuring that with a good sub, the difference between the R700 and R500 will not be too significant. Maybe that logic could still be applied for the R500 vs R300...however with Monitor, the Gold towers are much more expensive than what I was looking to spend. Since the R500s are within that budget, even if the R300s might save some $$, I'd rather get the R500s since they are within budget.

I totally understand. I prefer towers myself. I was just throwing out a suggestion. Plus, with towers, you could play 2.0 and get better bass, if you want. I think all three options you have narrowed it down to will be great. What I am doing is biting the bullet on shipping costs and just ordering a bunch so I can demo for myself in my own home. In your case, spend some time comparing the Kef to MA, pick one, then order the Ascends and return whichever you like less. If no dealer will let you take a set home and then return, I guess you could order the Ascends and drag then to whichever shop has the Kefs/MAs and compare there.

Where are people crossing their towers over to their subs? I'm crossing my sierra bookshelf speakers at 70hz but I have a feeling 50hz or 60hz would be better for towers since they can handle the bass better. Would a good rule of thumb be to round up to the nearest ten for the -3db point and then add another 10 so the speakers are all doing what they're best at? I think I heard the towers could do mid 30's so 50hz sounds about right.

I have mine at 40hz now but used 60 for the first 3-4 months or so. They sound spectacular at either.

50 Hz for me. I have a Pioneer SC-27 and the next available choice below 80 Hz is 50 Hz. For music listening I run them full range with no sub.
I think Dave (Ascend's owner) recommends 60 Hz for the towers.

Like Curtis said, preference is key. Sometimes the setting is based on room dimensions, distance to listening spot, and room resonance. Maybe setting at 60hz vs. 80hz in a specific room may sound better and smoother. My listening distance is 12.5 feet in my living room and a setting of 80hz sounds good and is thick but the setting at 60hz sounds even better with a blending that makes it hard to know where the bass is coming from, towers or subs. Experimenting is part of the joy with such a capable design as the Sierra Towers. It opens up a whole different level of control which fuels the fidelity.

Does it give you an ETA? Sometimes they will sit at the original location and start moving so it reaches the destination on the ETA.
Don't know why they do that but I've noticed it on stuff I've ordered.

Sorry Guys!
We took in considerably more tower orders then we anticipated -- a LOT more and thus we are running a bit behind. I am truly sorry.
Guys -- please send me a PM as I have a hard time associating forum names with actual customer names. I am happy to check the status for you
