I'd do it for the experience. I'm not known as a designer, but I've done a few.

$250 could get him a mic, blue icicle, HolmImpulse, and a minidsp. He'd be up and running in no time. Money well spent when the drivers are that good.

Tux, you are certainly capable of doing one of these designs assuming you are given adequate measurements. I'm sure many people, myself included, would be willing to work up a crossover using supplied measurements. It is definitely in the DIY community spirit. IMO this subforum is a helpful place.

The nice thing about designing it in public is that the design gets outside contributions, alternate opinions, and is thoroughly vetted. To the best of my knowledge, very few of us (myself included) are pro's in this arena.

Toscano, I'm not trying to discourage you from pursuing a SEOS project. I'm simply trying to stop you from poorly implementing your project, becoming disappointed and wasting your money. I'd love to see you put together some drivers, measure them and have the community come up with a design.

Well, there's been enough blah, blah, blah going in here that I feel comfortable throwing in my two cents. :P I just want to say the Eric is one top notch cat. A-1 customer service in my books. I've always wanted to dable with some horns and when I saw Eric was offering some through his new website I wanted in. I was a little skeptical because of the lead times and the no deposit required. Communication with Eric was excellent. Follow ups were to the point. Yes it took a while for the stuff to get made and shipped but that all comes from Poland, beyond Eric's control. Eric was even nice enough and help me save on shipping cost when I requested if he could add some Denovo Tweeters to the box the horns were coming in. If there is anyone skeptical of the legitimacy of Eric and his operation DIY Sound Group, to them I say Eric is legit and his items are the real deal. Thanks a million Eric.

Now for some show off pics. A pair of Autotech Tractrix-350 Horns in the cream color. Drivers are Electro Voice DH-1A w/2" exit.

Will there be a complete kit (with cabs) for the SEOS & Emmience drivers? If yes, how soon do you think this will be available? Thanks

Yes, everything should be here in about 30 days. I don't know how long US customs will be looking things over but I don't think it will be that long.

By the time everything gets here, I'll have complete flat pack kits with the CD's, woofers, waveguides, and all that neat stuff.

Thanks for the kind words! Glad your horns arrived okay, I package them to withstand a fairly good beating during delivery.

The drivers on the back look great. Once you get the speakers done, post some photos!

I had food additive items go through customs, which is more of a concern than plastics, and it took 3 days. They did call me and the company in China. I guess they were very curious about the white powdery stuff.

It's very heartening to see a GB organized and consummated in a businesslike manner by someone who communicates honestly and with frequent updates.
The AE group buy fiasco is a stark contrast to your operation despite having fewer moving parts.

Just received an email from John from AE regarding the specifics of my order. I was planning on pairing some TD15Ms or 12Ms with some SEOS12s I preordered. Would it be safe to say that I need let John know they will be at a 4ohm load (as opposed to 8ohm) to accommodate Erich's new CDs as well as future crossover designs? Was hoping to take advantage of the complete kits Erich was mentioning that will be future possibilities. Am I on the right track?

I was just asking myself the same question - 4 or 8 ohm TD15M with DE250? Is there any reason not to go 4 ohm with a passive crossover design? I assume my trusty Yamaha RX-V2500 will drive it since the specs give maximum output ratings at 8/6/4 (and 2?) ohms.

Doesn't matter if the woofer is a different impedance than the tweeter. Pick the one with an available design or that'll meet your needs best.

Sorry tuxedocivic, just to be sure, it doesn't matter if I order 8 or 4ohm drivers to pair with the de250/variant? The drivers will just present a load to the amplifier so it doesn't matter with an active or passive crossover either?

Different impedance drivers typically have different sensitivities so that would change the pad on the tweeter at the very least.......

Not sure about phase tracking but i think that can be different as well.......

Active or passive, it shouldn't matter unless you're using an existing design, which it sounds like you will. So then you're going to want the same driver the design uses. If the design uses the 4 ohm, get that.

If you're going to roll your own design, or have someone do the design, it doesn't matter. The 8ohm will be less senstive. That doesn't really affect the designing though, other than level adjustment. Pick the impedance that suits your use best.

Side note, some receivers are 4ohm stable but require them to be set to 4ohm mode. Not saying your receiver requires this, but some do and they suck in those modes. At least the few I've heard suck. I just left them in 8ohm mode and ran the risk of shutting down.

Thank you! Definitely existing design, but I'd like to place an order with AE for the three 12" and two 10" and get in line, ya know? So, in a nutshell, until designs are published for a TD12M/de250 and a TD10M/de250 I can't wait in line. Don't get me wrong, I'm not impatient, just excited. That said, I know that when that boat from China gets here it's giong to take a while for John to fill those orders and I'd like to take part in the wave of builds when all that goes down.

I'm hoping to run the front 3 speakers active, Denon 3805-->mini dsp-->hypex ucd180hg HxR and the surrounds passive. Of course, this depends entirely on whether or not active and passive designs will be available for those 2-ways.

I'm running active on my front 3 channels with a Faital Pro 12PR300 and DE500 cd's on the QSC horns. My center is using the Inuke 3000dsp with one channel for woofer and one for cd. My mains are using the MiniDSP and a Rane MA6S amp bridged. Each woofer is getting 300ish watts and the cd's are trimmed back to much less.
The MiniDSP works very well but it creates a bit of a cabling mess. I think I'm going to go with either 3 of the 3000dsp's or xti2000's. They allow for a much cleaner setup. The adjustability is just amazing by going active. You can try out an infinite number of xo's at no additional cost just by clicking a button.
Once Erich's new cd's are available I'd like to try a trio of those in place of the DE500's. Hurry up Erich!!!

It matters; for same XO freq, 4 ohm requires half the value for inductors and resistors, and double the value for capacitors.

It's not that simple most of the time. If there are notches or zobels etc. and a 4 and 8 ohm driver may measure differently othe than just the extra 3db.

So it doesn't matter if you're doing your own design. You have to figure it all out anyways. And if copying a design, I doubt halving the L and doubling the C will do it anyways. It'll still end up wrong, likely.

Honestly I can humbly say that I would really be shooting in the dark trying to design my own crossover. I am personally banking on some help as it seems like there are quite a few members who have already kindly provided clarification to us newer learners. I am not completely illiterate but am not a veteran by any means.

Bosso seems to be the "go to" guy that has dedicated his time and energy in helping Erich incorporate the SEOS into a high performing loudspeaker. Although I would consider it a very small contribution, I would be willing to send bosso a TD12M and a TD15M when I receive them to run through tests and come up with a solid crossover schematic for the masses. Not sure how many members have already offered this but I just thought I would throw it put there.
