Trying my best to follow diysoundgroup site and this site. I am ready to get flat packs once it's clear what the designs are. All I want to say is Erich for the love of God get some extra hands. Don't burn yourself out, bro! tongue.gif

Residential is finished up too. So I should be free and clear for about 1.5 weeks. cool.gifcool.gif I'll be adding more enclosures and the BA driver to the website within the next few days. I want to get caught up on packaging tomorrow. Nothing to do over the weekend but audio!
In the mean time, here's some residential photos. Before pictures were taken in the fall of course. This was a 2 day job, but there was work done around the sides and back too. If not for that and the little wall, it would have been 1 day. I didn't stick those lights in there. It does look better than before.......

Now they're going to have to upgrade their facade to match your landscaping. wink.gif

That's got to be terrible for moisture retention, but it sure looks nice.

Thanks guys. After 20 years, that landscaping is pretty easy stuff. At least it better be, huh wink.gif

Baffles have arrived and are now in stock. Lots of them. I uploaded some, but I'm heading out to dinner for a little while. The rest will come later this evening. Complete boxes are done for most of these as well but some people will only want the baffles. The prices could be lower, I just sort of guessed for now. I'm the one putting roundovers on all of them. So if people don't want the roundovers, I'll skip it.

Here's a few:

For the JBL 15" woofer:

jbl15_baffle.jpg

I like this next model a lot. For all beefy Eminence 12" woofers and I think the B&C's will fit as well. The Designer Series 12 also fits. Ports that fit are 2.5" flared.

For the same 12" woofers as above, but in a 40" tall tower form:

BWaslo's Malcolm speaker:

More later....must eat! biggrin.gif

Nice!

Wouldnt get carried away with roundovers though, especially those building their own boxes will want to flush trim then roundover.......

Hey, stop quoting all those baffle pictures Mr. NicksHitachi! biggrin.gif The reason they have roundovers is because many of those baffles will also be in kit form with an enclosure. But I will certainly keep some aside with no roundovers. As more designs are done, I'll get more baffles and boxes cut to match those designs.

Here are some other baffles. I think the smaller ones, even with the cutouts are going to be around $12 and even the biggest floor stander shouldn't be over $20. That's pretty crazy. I need to double check packaging material prices and Paypal fees to be sure though. It might be hard to find the right box for those large tower speaker baffles, but I will.

8" model:

8inch_baffle.jpg

10" model:

seos_10inch_baffle2.jpg

12" sealed or rear ported:

seos_12inch_baffle.jpg

21" tall blank baffle:

21tall_seos_baffle.jpg

There's also other blank baffles listed. A 19" for other 10's, 8's or dual 6's. A 26" for other 12's or 10's. A 30" for dual 10's or 12's. And then the big tower for dual 12's or a floor stander for a big ported 12".

Erich, any Seos 18/BA news?

Surround Thoughts

I pulled the trigger on getting SEOS12's and DNA350 for Desinger 10 surround build. I also came across an great bit of advice on PI's forum (thanks, Wayne!). Instead of "fins" on the back, use a flat screen TV mount. It will handle the weight (I'm estimating the Desinger 10 will be over 35 lbs. Far to heavy for normal speaker mounts), and this design below has a total tilt capability of 43° (-25° to +18°). Only $18 from PE. I order 2 of them with the designer 10's.

Now my dilemma. Because "Mr. Energizer Bunny" Erich has to come up with all of these great new flat pack options wink.gif, I'm starting to relook at the Malcolm. With a "finless" surround option and flat packs, this could be an easy build for a designer 10 or Malcolm. The dumb noob question is how do they compare soudwise? One 10" versus four 4". I plotted the two in WinISD. While the D10 beats the Malcolm in the sub 200 hz range, the Malcolm has a slight lead in the above 200 hz. Given these will be surrounds and given that I will be crossing these to a sub around 80hz, the Malcolms may be a better option for surrounds. Also, I'm thinking wide/short box will fit better on the walls than a thin/tall one. Thoughts?

Surround Thougths Part 2

Although I am "port-phobic", I'm wondering if porting the Malcolm may be the answer. Per below, it looks like a ported Malcolm is a winner. Side port?

Right now I'm thinking of building the 1 Malcolm and 4 of Bwaslo's other design's. I was going to do the AE, but not sure when I'll see them. Which one of the 12" design's is better that bwaslo's put together? I'm thinking of going non-ported since I have several subs.
The Malcolms are a ported design. One side port on both sides.

I'm working up kit prices right now. So you might want to hold off on any purchases until I get them posted. I'm thinking about having kits with just the parts, the parts and only the baffle, then complete kits with all parts and the full flat pack.

BA's will be listed before the weekend is out. I took photos last night.

Forum member MTG-09 made up a speaker using the 8" Celestion, the DNA-150, and another waveguide from the site. He has agreed to make another similar model but use the SEOS-12. The enclosure is listed on the site and should be about 8" deep. The Eminence 8" Delta is also a drop in for the same enclosure.
Malcolm is a ported box, though intended to be a center channel, with the receiver configuring it as "small" (highpass crossover at ~80Hz). It can of course be used full-range, but those are only 4" woofers! Great pattern control lower than even the large box speakers, but they won't be shaking the floors on their own!
Speaking of Malcolm, one thing that is still needed is a way to position it over top of a flat-panel TV without drilling mounts into the wall behind it. I'm not using a center channel right now, mostly for that reason -- no way to hold the speaker up there.

Anyone feel like designing some kind of decent-looking stand for it? The TV in my case is on a low table, so it would be nice to have something with feet that fit to either side of the TV's bottom stand with an arrangement to hold the Malcolm up above, flush with the screen. Anyone have any clever ideas? Or do I have to get out the drill?
I know many of you won't like this idea, but when I was searching for a way to securely mount my surrounds (8330's with my cabs) I removed the bass driver and found a stud on the wall and put 3 deck screws in a line through the rear of the enclosure to mount them. Just an idea. I wanted them flush to the wall and didn't want to spend money on expensive mounts. For my planned center I am going to cut a strip of the appropriate length and thickness to facilitate the angle I want and mount the strip to the wall and then the enclosure to that.

Thanks. I missed your ported spec in your DIY Sound Group post: "The box is ported, tuned to 60Hz and has an F3 of about 57Hz when mounted against a wall (above or below an LCD monitor is the intention)."

So, "on paper" the Malcolms seem like a great option for surrounds. Any concerns on blending with SEOS/2512's for the LCR? I was thinking that your Designer 10 design would blend better since they are comparable, but the Malcolms are radically different.

I know I'm over-thinking this...
The sound character is mostly from the waveguide I think, which is the same of course. I think they'd do well as surrounds, but I've never tried it for that (I only have one!).

If you don't care about angle adjustment, I'd recommend a French Cleat: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-202341623/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&keyword=French+cleat&storeId=10051#specifications

Very stable and easy to install.

The Delta 12LFA has a F3 of 80Hz in 2.0ft cubed...... I think the designer series were the only other bwaslo designs that work well sealed, but here comes someone to prove me wrong........ ;P
post #4920 of 7515
If I remember correctly, Mr. Waslo said the Designer 12" digs a little deeper in a sealed box.
