The default settings in the player will be fine to start. Do read the Manual section on cabling choices as suggested above.

Using HDMI direct to your display for Video and Optical Digital to your receiver for Audio is certainly a viable option, and definitely the simplest way to get started.

But if you only have stereo speakers -- or if you have surround speakers AND your receiver has multi-channel analog inputs -- then you may very well get better audio using the analog outputs of the Oppo. This is because the analog outputs of the Oppo use the high bit rate audio tracks from Blu-ray discs whereas the Optical Digital cable uses the "compatibility" lossy audio track instead. Using the multi-channel analog outputs is a little more complicated because you need to do some speaker configuration settings (described in the Manual).

Just to let you all know what happened with my lipsync issues.

The BDP-93 NU and my Sanyo PLV-Z700 never synced properly. I still do not know why, but the problems seem to affect the analogue outputs only. I have now installed a Rotel RSP-1570 processor connected to both my Sanyo and Oppo and the sync is perfect without the need to make any adjustments. So, case is closed, but spending money on the Nuforce edition was a complete waste since I am not using it for D/A conversion anymore.

If you plan to use the analogue outputs and without the possibility of doing lipsync in amp/tv, then make sure to try this player before purchase.

I'm not sure why you'd want to go through all that, when the Oppo should be able to play back the original FLAC files just fine.

Any idea if/when the oppo may work with ip control over the network. I really would like this option.

Slightly OT........I watched some NetFlix on my Oppo BDP93 last night.

I noticed the things others were mentioning earlier.....funny thing, I don't notice these issues on my HDTiVo...which we watch a TON of streaming NetFlix on.

Any ideas, just a bad night, or does something about the TiVo hardware or software produce better PQ?? I have often wondered how/why the TiVo produced the PQ it does for us with NetFlix.

I just had to point out that as a daily e-mail subscriber (and occasional poster) to this thread, yesterday marked the fewest posts, 7, as far back as I can remember and I've read or skimmed nearly every one since the beginning. I'm not sure whether one can extrapolate anything from that (new buyers and tech issues plateauing?), but for some reason I found it noteworthy.

Anyhow, can any BETA testers or those "inside" comment without consequence whether Oppo plans to add any more "experimental features" such as a SiriusXm application?

Beta testers can not talk about work in progress or when new stuff might be released.

I just got myself an Oppo BDP-93, wow! what a player!

I know that the player now supports Blu-Ray ISO locally, does it work over a DLNA NAS (like the Western Digital my book live) ?

If so, how is the performance?

I want 2 things:

1. Be able to watch Blu-Ray from a NAS hard drive (connected to my network)
2. Be able to listen to FLAC files from the same NAS hard drive.

Not possible as ISO. You can rip the titles to a supported media format, but that is a bit of work.


That works. You need a DLNA server on the NAS or elsewhere on the network.

Then I will buy an external hard drive (no NAS). What do you guys suggest? I have tried my old 320gb WD (usb powered 2.5'') yesterday and it was soooo slow, almost impossible to play my FLAC files and navigate. Then I use a USB stick and it worked flawlessly.

I want to buy a 2 TB hard drive, will the WD My Book Essentials can do the job? It is self powered (not USB powered).

There are a variety of powered popup docks that take bare SATA drives. They are handy because you'll want to transport the drive back and forth between the player and your main storage to maintain it.

I use a couple of those with Seagate 3.5" 1TB drives. I'm going to try a 2.5" drive, time permitting.

2TB is the current maximum size for OPPO.

Yes, for Blu-ray, but not for DVD.

wildchild22, coincidentally enough I emailed Oppo that same question just two days ago. I was curious about iOS/Android development of a "remote control" app. As usual there response was quick!

Here was their response:

We will be supporting IP Control in the future, but the control will only emulate the IR remote of the player. It will not add additional functionality such as secondary monitor or file push capability.

Long time lurker on this thread but first post.

Have had a 93 for a couple of months now, hooked up to a sony xbr1 720p lcd, and a denon avr 2803 receiver (with a 7.1 mirage omnisat 1 surround system). Am loving the overall quality boost i'm seeing, but, despite my system's limitations (certainly no more upgrades this year), i want to eek the best i can out it.

Hope you can help:

1. The denon has no hdmi so i use digital coax for audio. I recently learnt that this prohibits my being able to get hi res audio off SACD and such others as the Dark Side of the Moon blu ray from the recent floyd boxset. So, although i don't have a 95, are there benefits to me using the 7.1 analogue connects?

2. A few posts ago it was mentioned that the rf cables from a harmony extender could plug directly in to the oppo, but do any harmony/oppo users know how to set this up in the harmony software setup?

3. Am almost done filling up 4x2tb wd green hard drives with my dvd, dvd-a and blu ray collection. Can anyone confirm that when using a 4 bay probox, the oppo will only see all 4 drives over USB and not esata?

4. Another few posts or pages ago i think someone was recommended to not adjust their picture settings via the oppo, and use their TV's controls instead. Is this true for all TVs or was it particular to that screen/post?

To clarify on the analogue interconnects... My denon can only decode regular dvd standard dts and dolby digital. It then offers pro logic II and dts neo for analogue signals. When listening to the oppo via rca connects would i set the denon to direct, stereo, or one of the faux surround modes, to notice the benefit?

Do you have any more information on that? I thought when outputting Blu-Ray audio via analog the PCM encoding [and if not available then regular DTS and lossy Dolby Digtial] and not Dolby Digital TrueHD or DTS-HD Master is used, nor will the receiver/amp recognize them as such. Also aren't Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD Master both lossless? Hope you are correct as that would be great but I'd like more details. Thanks.

Received my Oppo BDP-93 player about a week ago. This thing is awesome. Really good player. Mostly just watch DVD's on it, with the occasional Blu-ray (more coming as shows are getting released). Settings wise, I just have the noise reduction at +1 for DVDs. Although I haven't seen much of a difference with the sharpness at +1 and sharpness at +16. I was just looking at one area while I was adjusting things. I was told that the sharpness setting utilizes Marvell's Natural Depth Expansion, which according to the article tries to bring out the details you'd get from Blu-rays. Not sure if +16 means max detail or not.

I am trying to determine what all the streaming options are on this player. I am aware of Netflix, Blockbuster, Vudu, Youtube, and Pandora. Are there any other likely candidates such as Amazon and MLB planned for the future?

You missed FilmFresh and Picassa (which strictly speaking is not really streaming).

Neither Oppo nor a potential streaming partner will make announcement until all is good to go.

Buy the player (or don't buy the player) for what it does now...not what it might do or what you hope it might do at some point in the future.

I don't believe anyone has written about this yet, but less than a week ago, Gene DellaSala of Audioholics posted a review of the Pandora upgrade on a BDP-95 in the publication's Pro Review section. Conclusion:

I sent an email to oppo asking if netflix.ca works on the player and they told me with the latest firmware netflix.ca works. Can anyone confirm?

I'd love to see Amazon on the Oppo. I'm already a Prime member, but don't have access to their movies with any of my current devices.

It's been a while, but I think you just tell Harmony which devices get controlled by the extender and which by the remote (the default). So in this case, the commands for the Oppo would not be sent via IR from the remote but would be broadcast in RF, picked up by the extender, and converted to electrical or IR signals for the Oppo.

I'm not in Canada myself, but we've definitely had posts here already that Netflix on the 93 and 95 does indeed work in Canada
