I am using Ethernet and it has worked without a single issue. I would imagine Wifi would work just fine, but Ethernet will more than likely be more stable.

No issues with the Expendables on my 93 running in to Pioneer SC-07 bitstream, coming out of HDMI1 on the Oppo for both sound and video. A week later and near perfection, now if some those Qdeo firmware improvements would hit life would be too good.

I am going both ways - may router is close so it my not be a fair test but both are performing very well so far.

Just unpacked and installed my 93. Got it up and running and connected wirelessly in a heartbeat. Few problems / questions.

I can stream Netflix so I am connected. However, if I check for firmware upgrades over the network I get cannot access server or something to this effectr message. Any suggesttions on how to get aorund this.

If I wanted to update firmware via USB instead, where can I download the firmware?

I bought the player primarily so I could stream my music FLACs from the DLNA UPNP NAS. I can get to the NAS on "my network" just fine and even see the directory structure and the FLACs, but trying to play them does not work. Is this just a matter of waiting for firmware upgrade. anyone successfully streamed FLACs over the home network?

There are no firmware updates available yet. When they are available you will be able to download them from the 93's support area at OPPO's web site.

Wow! Played Disney's A Christmas Carol. Awesome. Avatar awesome. I am using HDMI 1 to the 55nx810, HDMI 2 to the Denon 3808ci. Other than a couple of handshake issues ( I hope that this gets worked out in firmware updates) at the beginning of the BR I have had zero problems. DTS Master Audio all the way. I am using a wired network to the 93.

I thought that I just read it a bit ago but what is the best way to power on the devices so that handshake issues are minimized. Is it OPPO - TV - Receiver?

Is there any way that I can find out if my TV supports HDMI Deep Color? I have it set to off but am wondering if it supports it since it is brand new?

I wish I had some SACD's to test out. Maybe some videos too via the network. If you guys can point me in a good direction to get some test sacd and video plz let me know.

Now off to the Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Rings and a long night of movie watching!

I watched the same movie two nights ago, it was Netflix BluRay rental, and had no issues. HDMI 1 (video) to Sony KDS 60-A3000, HDMI 2 (audio) to HK AVR 3600.

Sorry to hear this. I've watched The Expendables twice on my 93 with no problems. I wonder if it's just an isolated incident. Have you retried that part again to see if it works?

Just curious someone mentioned this in another thread in the audio forum.

Does this player duplicate the rear channels for 7.1 systems? So basically if you have 5.1 does it try to output 7.1?

I hope not because my avr has dolby prologic 2x that will matrix it instead.

Can anyone comment on this?

Hi guys,

My experience with SACD and DVD-Audio is somewhat limited, so please excuse my basic question.

I have a solid 2 channel music system, with monoblocks, musical fidelity V-Dac etc.

I intend to secure an Oppo BDP-93 to play SACD and DVD-A (and an occasional movie every once in a while). Then I noticed on audioholics that the player does not have stereo out. This confused me.

What is the best way to play SACD from the BDP-93 to a 2 channel music system? Do i connect the player to my DAC through USB? Or does it go directly to my analog Pre-Amp?

Is the player not intended to play high def audio on a pure audiophile 2 ch. system?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Kind regards,

Magnus

You have to use the FR and FL channels from the 7.1 analog outputs to get the stereo output (set the Oppo to do a stereo downmix for > 2 channel sources). Also, just in case you are not aware, BDP-95 will be released in a few months (may be a couple) as a replacement of the BDP-83SE which will have much better DACs for analog outs. You may want to wait for it if you have a high end stereo setup.

Thanks NewPannyGuy.

If I have a good DAC already, does the Oppo not have digital outs so I can skip its dac and use my separate one instead?

Does the whole downmix to stereo process in any way modify/degrade the signal, or is it kept in its purest form? I mean, comparing to a SACD / DVD-A player which is meant for high-end 2-ch. audio, is this downmix solution a disadvantage?

Thanks again for all the help!

The Oppo does have digital outs (optical/coax) that could go to your V-DAC.

This depends. If you are bit streaming it is source in, source out. So 5.1 is 5.1; 7.1 is 7.1

If you are having the player decoding, then if the source is DTS or DTS-HD Mater 5.1, and your receiver handshakes at its potential, then the player will handshake upmatrix to 7.1 (per the decoding specifications of DTS).

With Doby Digital and Dolby Digital TrueHD it should be 5.1 or 7.1 depending on the source.

Are they going to be offering this player for sale in time foe Christmas?

Hard to say. Depends on how quickly and efficiently they remove the bugs which are in the current firmware, and if they feel that the player is ready for mass release to the public. By now OPPO should know just how good/bad the reception of the player is, so they can start to look at what needs to be done to release it officially.

I am trying to decide whether to get this or just get a DVDO edge (another box).

I had the 1st glitch on a movie. Was trying to play Back To The Future 2 Blu-ray & it wouldn't load past the spinning Universal logo.

I tried power cycling, taking the disc out & putting back in.

I tried everything & couldn't get it to load. Can someone that has that disc try it to see if it will play. If not I'll report it to Oppo.
marine,

it's likely related to some BD-Live function. Universal disc always connect to the internet so as to force viewers into trailers -- and in SD no less.

Do you have the player connected? If you do, try turning it off and play the disc again. Just a thought.

On DVD-A you will have to select the "stereo" track, on for SACD in one of the sub menu there is an option for MCH or 2ch SACD as a preferred option :choose stereo or 2ch and then when you insert an SACD disc the player will automatically select the that track. So in those cases no modification or degradation at all. However if you use digital outputs it must be the HDMI, so your DAC should have that connection type. SPDIF won't allow DSD and MLP although very few Stereo tracks on DVD-A use that, like the 192khz sampling rate ones. Others should be able to pass via SPDIF, but no DSD.The player does have an option to convert DSD to PCM, but I'm not sure that would be permissible to pass via SPDIF still.Sony is rather strict about that.

I was able to play it. It did take a long time to get through all the nonsense.

I haven't watched a full BD yet on my 93 but have listened to SACD's and watched For All Mankind streamed from Netflix without any problems (wired connection). Checked out some BD Live on Apocalypse Now, I wanted to see the teaser trailer that was just released last week. It did take awhile for connection/download. I usually have BD Live turned off to eliminate potential problems.

As was said, there is no updated firmware yet and the update servers are not working (or not always).

When available there will be links to new firmware at OPPO's site and in the first posting of this thread.

FLAC is not working over DLNA yet. We expect this to be fixed in future firmware.

I just tried BTTF 2 and had no issues. It loaded in about 50 seconds. I do have BD-Live disabled though.

My memory is a bit hazy, how long of a process was it for the 83 before it got a general public release after the initial beta testing phase?

I've been playing BD using HDMI 2 through my receiver to the VT25, audio shows and plays as DTS HD Master and all is good. Last night I used HDMI 1, dedicated HDMI cable to the VT25 for video and got DTS HD Master, I think, at least that's what displayed on the Integra 8.9. Did the audio signal go to the receiver via the HDMI 2 or the optical cable, I though DTS HD would only be available using HDMI. How can I tell the source of the audio if the HDMI 1 does not pass through the receiver? I checked the on screen display but couldn't tell.

The PQ and audio were excellent on HDMI 1. BD was the most recent Sherlock Homes.

HDMI Audio = Auto
Coaxial/Optical Output = LPCM

You can't have DTS HD through coaxial/optical. If you have HDMI1 to the display and HDMI2 to the receiver, however, you get all the HD audio. Why are you using coax/optical if you can use the HDMI2 to output any audio mode ? The best you can do is HDMI1 to the VT25 and HDMI2 to the Integra, nothing else should be plugged.

Best combo, is a decent BR player and a Duo, for calibration properties (gamma/grayscale/built in cms). Edge is OK, but Id just buy an Oppo if that was your only plan. You really are not gonna see a difference on the scaling of tv, edge vs a newer display.

Watched Tears of the Sun, and Karate Kid 2010. Everything going very well, but realized another drawback from the wifi reconnect issue. After Karate Kid, clicked on BD Live because I wanted to check it out, and the box told me to check my connection. When having the Nflix problem earlier, I did not even consider this an issue with BD Live. So, FYI, you may need to connect to the wifi, before booting the movie, if you plan on using BD Live.
