At least we know we are on their mailing list.

already have 1 bpd-93 (which luckily I updated to newest fw before the latest and disabling one came out. it is out now right?) but wondering if I do decide to buy another, will I be able to update it via usb to the newest fw that still does iso playback?

I mean they shouldn't restrict you to a choice between old fw (that comes on it) and new disabling fw, you should be able to choose in the on screen fw update even or at least via usb as I said.

if not, then no sale.

as it is there is the concern that in the future there are movies that maybe dont play and require a fw update but then those movies will be returned the second they dont work and require a feature disabling fw update.

I can't wait till a new non disc format comes out but still has the full quality resolution and sound (ie. not netflix garbage). ridiculous that by forcing companies who make players to disable features they are essentially forcing us to only be able to use the disc. Once we buy the disc it should be our right to rip it to file for personal use (or download a rip if that is easier for the person possibly then dealing with ripping their disc). preserving the disc investment and not having to keep discs cluttering up space and fumbling with them.

As a follow up thread about my purchase of the Oppo 93 on Amazon on March 08, 2012

I received my unit yesterday from Amazon and it has this firmware:

BDP9X-57-0917

I have no idea how old this firmware is but I am glad that I am able to play .mkv, .iso, and 3D .iso from my portable Seagate 1.5 GB via USB port.

I am a happy camper now.

I also have the HiMedia 900B and the Dune Smart H1 (that I bought about 1 year ago).

Anyway, I am glad that I bought the Dune before the price go up and I am also glad that I bought the Oppo 93 before the new firmware is installed by default.

So buy your Oppo 93 from Amazon now folks before it is too late.

I guess I will need a powered usb hub? since the portable usb hdd's I use are usb powered (no power cord).

what is good smaller powered hub that we know works with usb powered portable hdd's (like WD passport and Seagates competing product) and the oppo?

thanks in advance

The Seagate 1.5gb is a 2.5" (laptop size) usb powered (no power cord) portable hdd? I think WD's still max out at 1gb.

The Dune Smart H1 doesnt play full 3d bd iso I assume (so why did it go up in price?) but how do you like HiMedia 900b for 3d bd iso playback in comparison to the Oppo?

because I am interested in a 2nd device to play 3d bd iso but dont really want to buy another oppo and would prefer a device that I can use a jukebox prog with (prefer yamj) since we can't on the oppo. jukebox feature would be worth giving up menus (and would still have them on the oppo).

The numbers at the end of the Main firmware are the build date of that firmware. In your case September 17 of last year. (The firmware release date is usually a few days to a few weeks after that.) There's one more Official firmware beyond that which still includes ISO support. See the firmware history portion of the first post of this thread.

Interesting, I installed the firmware update without even knowing it could play ISOs. If I had known earlier, I may have wanted that.

Is it possible to downgrade the firmware using an older version, or does it prohibit that?

No. This has been something that OPPO has been "working on" for the past 7 years. They have never had the opportunity to announce firmware releases in the past, so many customers have been left in the dark as to when new firmware is available. With Blu-ray players this can literally bring their support to a crawl as customers call to report issues with discs, only to be told that firmware is already out there.

OPPO now has a proper database and E-Mail back-end to report firmware upgrade availability to all their customers, and not just those that have the player connected to the network or have their thumbs on the pulse of OPPO news.

The firmware installer in the player won't let you roll back to an older version.

Got the email also. Not gonna give up my favorite feature by upgrading. They are silly if they think anyone is going to. I do know for a fact that there is a back door that will allow any firmware to be installed. I don't know it though. Wish I did.

Hi all

I was not aware of the iso thing when I upgraded my 93 yesterday.
I was very disappointed when they removed this feature. I was even more disappointed when I discovered that very few mediaplayers/DVDs on the market where able to handle BD 3D iso.
To make a long (very long) story short I discovered a half way workaround of the iso issue on the 93.

Mount the iso in your PC, create a folder on your external usb/esata hard drive and name it something (e.g.Avatar 3D). Drag the BD folders (3 folders) from the mounted iso to the external hard drive (Avatar 3D folder). Connect the hard drive to your Oppo. Now, when selecting the avatar 3d folder in your Oppo it directly starts the BD with all BD features.
I have tried this with avatar 3d, cars2 3d, pirates 3d and some regular DVDs. It works in all cases.

Maybe this undocumented feature also will go away when the music industry discovers it.

The only weird thing is that avatar 3d when stored on the external HD takes twice the space (app 80 GBYTE) compered with the iso. But that is another discussion in another forum.

I too bought my 93 from Amazon and took delivery early Feburary. Mine came with the same firmware version and I'm stickin with it. I may pick up another one and do updates only if I run into problems with future blu ray releases.

Let me justify it.

ISO is gone and not coming back. If you need ISO playback you should get a device that officially supports it on an ongoing basis.

Owning a Blu-ray player that you are afraid to update with new firmware is unwise. It will end in tears. From now until the end of time this thread will have a constant stream of anguished complaints about not being to update firmware without losing ISO.

No other device able to do it as well? That's why it is forbidden.

Welcome to AVSForum

This technique is already listed in the FAQ: What are the alternatives to .iso files?

We've heard nothing about it, but I would not doubt that at all. It takes the lawyers a while to notice these things.

Yes, the current official firmware removes ISO support. No, you cannot install older firmware.

They're not doing it to make you unhappy. Some licenses require that DRM move only forward, never back. We blame Netflix in this case.

I would like to see Netfix remove from the player.

Bill truly not for the sake of starting an argument but I NEVER EVER had to be afraid about firmware downloads until it happened last week with OPPO.

I cannot recall a firmware update on ANY machine which implied the loss of a (major) functionality.

And I am not even discussing in detail the way things are going right now...I mean if it is FORBIDDEN why does Oppo give us the so called helping hand to get it back again.....

Have you ever had a circumstance where the studios threatened to put you out of business if you did not comply with their directives? How did that work out?

Nothing you or anyone else has told us here indicates you can have both new firmware and ISO support. That is forbidden by studio diktat. If it is possible for OPPO to install previous firmware via some special access, that still doesn't give you updated firmware with ISO.

And that is why the original poster was right to get other devices to play his ISO files. Because living with outdated firmware on a Blu-ray player will be a bad experience.

Yepp, for the Oppo iso-user....it was fun while it lasted....

Probably wise to start to focus on (3D) streamers....

I agree (very hard not to) the influence of Hollywood must be huge.

Good stuff Bill!

For those who can't think of any player that had a firmware update that removed a feature, Google PS3 + Anonymous.
