All of these streaming hosts have a certification program for aquiring their app. You apply, and its up to them to respond. They all seem to gravitate to who sells the most boxes. It has nothing to do with any BD player company other then exclusives, money thrown around, and favortism IMHO.

Netflix decides which devices get what level of service, and even what interface.

The code in the Netflix app on the OPPO is produced by Netflix. The version they've provided to OPPO is not the newest version.

It's not a technical limitation in the OPPO, as evidenced by the VUDU-provided app, which is simply a better app.

What you just said reminds me of the direction Nakamichi took back in the 90s. Once, a respected manufacturer of high end cassette players (the Dragon), they started equiping their players with cheap looking colored plastic buttons and the cutback in quality was reflected within.

I apologize for possibly a redundant question. Anyways thank you to all for your responses.

Sorry about that. This thread is so long, I get lost. But, thank all of you who help explain, much appreciated.

I don't think anyone need apologize for "what does it do" questions. This thread IS quite long.

The FAQ and Wiki links found at the top of the first post of this thread are extremely useful resources for answers, but of course not everyone spots them.

I'd say we are much worse here at "why doesn't it do it differently" questions. Particularly after the Nth asking.

Hi, I have had the 83 and now the 93. Love them but they seem to show more noise than other players. The noise reduction feature makes it lose detail. I now have all setting at default setting / 0 level.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

I originally thought I had the same problem and found out that by changing the dynamic contrast setting on my TV to low (a Samsung, BTW), it took care of it....not sure if that will work for you; however, it did for me....noise all gone! So, I guess what I'm saying is, have you fiddled with your TV settings?

sfaprilbob,
Right. Some types of noise are due to HDMI cabling problems (the "sparklies"). Others are just indications that your TV settings are wrong, either for basic levels or for "features" like the one he mentioned above. And others are due to choosing a video output data format that your display or AVR doesn't handle well.

If you can describe the type of noise you are seeing we may be able to help. Also, be sure to check your basic video calibration settings (in the TV) with the help of a good calibration disc like Spears & Munsil, Blu-ray.

Hi Guys,

I have recently bought the BDP-93 and am having problems connecting it to the network..

I have read some of the FAQ but cannot find a solution. I have the player wired into a router (airport extreme) behind the tv which is just extending the signal from my main router downstairs. The player is picking up the network, and has an active internet connection, allowing me to access youtube, firmware updates etc. Only problem is I can't see any shared drives on my network.

I have a small HDD connected directly to the airport extreme router (along with the BDP) and being shared over the network. I also have a WD media player sharing a 1TB drive as well. I can access both of these drives from my PC wirelessly, and play content on my other LCD TV. Why won't my player pick up any devices on 'My Network'? When I can clearly access them from other devices on the network.

Any guidance or advice would be great.

Thanks a lot

Welcome to AVSForum. I have a strong sense of deja-vu just now.

What DLNA server are you running?

-Bill
thanks Bill,

I'm not currently running any server.. I was under the impression the BDP would be able to pick up any external shared devices just like the PC's do?

Do I have to start a server from my PC over the network in order to get the player to play the content on the shared drives? This is pretty inconvenient since ive already managed to get my Denon AVR, two separate sound systems, 2 HDD's, 1 iPad, 3 iPhones and 3 Mac laptops to talk to eachother and share video/music files with out the use of a server..

but maybe I am delaying the inevitable..?

thanks again

The Oppo is a DLNA device. It does not access network shares.

Yes, you need to be running a DLNA server somewhere on your network. Start here in the FAQ: What is DLNA?

This is the standard Blu-ray players use. Support for networks shares is rare: I recall at least one LG model had it. I haven't kept up with any others.

We've requested support for network shares but have been told not to expect in the current player line.

If I can access my HDD over the network with other devices, doesn't that mean my WD Media Player is turning the HDD into a NAS with a built in server?

thanks for all your helpful links!

Maybe. I'm not familiar with that product. You'll need to get into its docs or support forum and find out whether it includes a DLNA server.

"Shared devices" usually implies network shares = network file systems like NFS or SMB. That's something different.

This is all leading up to the Analog Sunset when BDP's released after December, 31 2013 will no longer have any Analog Video Outputs (Component, Composite, S-Video)

So in this respect the OPPO is indeed an excellent choice. However, any Blu-Ray Disc released in 2012 can have an ICT (Image Constraint Token) where all BDP's that can output HD over Component are restricted from doing so and output no higher than 576 lines of resolution.

The whole thing is absurd as it is targeting people who are actually purchasing physical media and will do nothing to slow down widespread piracy of Movies and TV Series copied on Computers. While the Component Output of the OPPO does not benefit from the Marvell Qdeo Video Processor, the Mediatek SOC has been very well implemented by OPPO and the Bench Tests of the Component Output are very good.
Cheers,
AD

I am using an analog (pre HDMI) Sony G90 projector connected to a 93 via HDMI. All my friends using various other analog projectors are also using HDMI connections. So don't see why the discontinuation of HD over component output should lead to analog sunset.

Which WD Media Player? Is the HDD internal to the WDMP? If so, the WDMP is
acting as a NAS server. If not, it's acting as a NAS client.

The BDP-93 isn't a NAS client or server but it will, in fact, act as a DLNA client.

I am only a fanboy of what works for me! I belong to 4 other threads (Oppo BDP-95, Sony BDP-S5000ES, Pioneer BDP-05FD and a Denon DVD-5910CI) for which I own transports and the focus seems to be performance 1st and everything else 2nd. I have never had a problem finding buttons on the Oppo in low light or darkness for that matter since the remote was backlit unlike my Sony which I believe it is not, but nowadays I use a universal remote.

Is there any reason not to use this region free mod: http://www.ebay.com/itm/OPPO-BDP-93-...ht_2395wt_1002

Is it the same thing as the more expensive ones?

Question on regular network connection with WD My Book World...

Have the 93 hooked up with the wireless connection. No problems with Netflix or any other streaming service on it. When I go to "My Network", it finds the WD network drive, as well as any other laptops logged on.

When I click on the WD network drive, it only comes up with a "Videos" file. Strange thing is that I have many other folders... and NONE that are exactly "Videos". When I click on the "Videos" folder, it brings up a folder labeled "3.31.2010", which is a real folder on the drive, etc.

I'm just trying to play the AVCHD files from my camcorder. Is there a folder structure I need to follow? Is this a problem with the drive or the player?

Just curious why the other folders don't show up on the drive in the Oppo menu.

FWIW, I have dropped in a DVD-R with the AVCHD folder with BDMV and Certificate folders raw data from the camcorder, and they play just fine. (I spent hours if not days trying to remux etc all the raw AVCHD camcorder data to play on my old AVCHD capable Panny BD player. I hate screwing around with computer files, so it was a pleasant surprise that the raw data played just fine in the Oppo... I'd just like to be able to store and play it on the network drive!

Thanks!

I asked Oppo Service about this about a month ago. This was their response:

It is unlikely that we will be able to add Netflix 1080p and 5.1 audio support through a future firmware release due to limited resources from Netflix and our decoder manufacturer at this time.

Oppo just doesn't have the volume to make Netflix and their decoder manufacturer take notice. I would think that the sort of positive reviews Oppo gets would influence Netflix. But I guess volume is king.

"My Network" connects to one or many DLNA servers somewhere on your network. You'll need to find an interface to the Mybook server (it's probably a web page on the device) and learn how to adjust it's settings. Or you could use another DLNA server on one of your PCs.

AVCHD works on local storage like an optical disc or directly attached hard drive. DLNA networking does not support it, although you should be able to access individual M2TS files within the AVCHD folder structure. I'm not sure all DLNA servers support that; you'll have to experiment.

Thanks for the response... Now I just need to google what the hell it means! I don't think I ever setup the internet connectivity on the drive, so I gather that's where I'll need to start.
