Thanks for your input......

Try cleaning the disc before you return it. The disc may have an oil film or such left on it from manufacturing.

By the way, OPPO Tech Support usually responds to emails quite quickly -- certainly within a day, and usually much faster. Check your SPAM filter and Junk folder to make sure the reply from OPPO isn't getting blocked.

Man.. I've had my Oppo 93 for a couple months and LOVE IT. The quality is excellent for sound and picture. I have a pretty big DVD collection, and I have to say they look better than ever!! Does Bluray make the picture of regualr DVD's look better? Does the Oppo do it better than most Bluray players?

Also, besides excellent picture and sound, is the Oppo better or capable of doing anything else I need to me made aware of? (other than Pandora, and Voodoo, and other apps it comes with.. between my Apple TV, Panny Plasma, and AVR, those things are pretty pointless.. Although I do love the Pandora the best.

Anyone by chance used this external hard drive bay with the BDP-93 via eSATA and had good luck with it? Says device needs to support SATA port replication and I wasnt sure if the 93 did.

You'd need to use the USB connection for something like that. eSATA won't give you port multiplying and only one drive will be seen.

Dang. And streaming .mkv files from a network device would require DNLA or something like that correct?

There's no reason to shy away from the USB connection, it does everything the eSATA does. eSATA would be more appropriate for connection to PC, and with that box you can connect both and switch back and forth.

Yes, DNLA is required for network access on this player.

Hmm.... Okay, perhaps Ill give it a try then.

One more quick question: if there are hundreds of movies to browse through, how quickly/responsive is whatever searching/scrolling/displaying info offered by the Oppo for managing all those files? Ive never seen it in action and if its slow, clunky or cumbersome itll annoy me and I wont use it.

It's cumbersome for large collections. No searching, just scrolling by page, although you can use the GOTO button to jump to an index number, if you can estimate where you want to land.

All, just want to confirm that my oppo can handle a 25fps blu-ray

amazon.co.uk is offering an edition of the LedZeppelin Celebration Day disc in native shot 25fps however only plays in Euro players. Will the oppo play it as my projector is able to handle a 50 Hz signal.

This is from amazon's product page:

Higher Quality Version Available for EU Blu-ray Players
The blu-ray in this edition of Celebration Day was filmed at a rate of 24 frames per second. If you would prefer to purchase the higher quality version, filmed at 25 frames per second, click here. However, please note that the latter is only compatible with EU blu-ray players

Any confirmation would be helpful.

Thanks,
Russ

Yes, all OPPO players handle 50hz content, including 1080i50 Blu-ray.

There is still the issue of region coding; is the disc region-free?

There's no "management" to speak of, just a list of files. You can use the page-up/down to scroll rapidly through a list. Usually best to organize files into category folders to limit the number of files in each one.

Not sure, have a region-mod though, so I think I'm good to go.

Thanks.

Sigh... Is there no GOOD way to stream full quality DVDs with 5.1 audio from a low power storage unit?!!! I dont even care if I have to stream them through another device, I just thought Id start researching with the Oppo.

So what are the draw backs of going the DLNA route?

I do it all the time, but what I consider a GOOD way may not suit you. What are your requirements?

I make MKV version of the DVD titles.

DLNA: When it works, it's great.

As is and has always been the case, if you want media box functionality you have to get a media box. Especially for ISO support and VIDEO_TS folder support. Same is true for actual management and sorting of movies.
As Bill points out, MKV files work fine for DVD rips but of course you lose the menu and bonus content.

Oppo got back to me very quickly and had me delete the memory and make sure it is "off" in BD live, which it always is. I also thought it might be a dirty disc, so I cleaned them very well and tried them again with the same results. I returned the Blu ray today, Amazon is quite amazing, and am thinking of trying the WOW again or go with the one Oppo has for sale on their website.......??

Thanks to all for your helpful advise..........

If you still have the ISO capable firmware, the simplest method is to attach HDD directly to the Oppo and just play ISO versions. It's not elegant and requires an initial selection of HDD but it gets the job done and gives full features of DVDs without having to remux them into less functional containers.

As for low power: the 2TB WD passport drives are not particularly power hungry and entering the affordable price range, or if you have money to burn, you can use SSD with a dock.

Are you surprised that there are no straightforward facilities to do what you want with a Bluray player? The studios don't want you to have an easy path to copy and playback their "intellectual property", even if it is for personal use after having purchased their product.

Secondly, good time of the year for the wife wondering what to get you for Christmas! (Or Black Friday) Mine went for paying the Trade-In difference as my early Christmas Present.
I'm hoping the 103 will be missing the Handshake problem I have with the 93, between it and my iScan Duo.
Where do you find trade in information?
Thanks

Trade-in deals may be available from the original dealer of the Oppo but not if that dealer was OppoDigital itself or Amazon.

Then look into selling it via AVS marketplace, ebay, Audiogon, Craig's List, etc.

After reading of the problems new purchasers are having, decided to fall back onto my old sayings: If it ain't broke don't fix it,(my 93) and never, ever buy something until at least the second or third generation, and the bugs are worked out! (Current 103)
Wife will just have to come up with something else for Christmas.
(Also, the provider quoted his price backwards - one more reason to keep the nothing wrong with it, 93.)

Plus - the New 103 now has the Sony Protection invoked - the 93 doesn't.
More problems with the 103 now listed on their Forum.

Anyone else have audio dropouts in the movie Brave with the 7.1 TrueHD track? I have read some others having this issue over at bluray.com and I am wondering if maybe I just need to update my 93 firmware? I have not updated the FW in a while, so could an old FW cause an audio drop?

Thanks

Seems like the 83 has it too.

Thanks Brian. So it sounds like this may be a player issue? Have 83 owners been able to rectify it by updating the firmware, or doing something else? Not a major issue for me, but would still like to solve it if I can.

No, on the current FW.

Is this repeatable at the same spot?

Are you using HDMI for audio? Does switching between HDM1 & 2 make a difference?

Are you going to a receiver? Does switching between Bitstream and LPCM change the behavior?

No dropouts with the TrueHD track off the 3D disc on my 93 with ISO capable firmware.
