I agree.

Using what others do to rationalize Oppo making the BDP-93 official isn't really valid in my book. It's an easy excuse, actually.
I'm not really bashing Oppo here so please at least read everything I write before condemning me. I do believe the system involved with the BDP-93 testing was flawed. The testing and whatnot done with the BDP-83 worked better. I know the BDP-83 wasn't released without its issues, as well, but it was not nearly as bad at first.
I ordered the BDP-83 via early purchase and I did the same this time with the BDP-93. The difference between the two is simply impossible to sit down and put into works. I plugged in my BDP-83 and was simply blown away. With the BDP-93 one thing after another had my blood boiling and me wondering what imbecile had allowed the testing system to pre-release the BDP-93 with the 1108 firmware. It was truly garbage in many ways. I found myself wanting to chuck it out the nearest window at times. Yeah yeah, I know, it was only pre-release and feedback was needed. I know the line. That's not a valid explanation or rationalization for pre-releasing something too early.
Myself and people I know who all received the pre-release BDP-93's did go through customer service many times to report issues and help get them resolved so that other people didn't have to experience the same problems but even that process was truly painful due to a number of issues that I'm not going to even get into here. The point in mentioning it is that if you pre-release a product expecting people to report issues so that you can fix them then you must also make sure your support staff is capable of handling it and knowing the product. If it turns out that some of the support staff do not and pass along incorrect information to the customer then you have a serious problem and that did happen. I sincerely hope Oppo rethinks testing process the next time around and goes back to a system more like was done with the BDP-83 release.
Now, the new official firmware is a huge improvement but it still hasn't fixed all the issues that existed. There are problems with Matroska support that need to be resolved. I, personally, get extremely annoyed at a product that claims support for something but when I go to use it I run into numerous issues. They need to fix the Matroska stuff. Personally, I believe one more firmware update pushed out the door would have been good before an official launch for the BDP-93. Maybe their goal is to have it official so people can still purchase it for Christmas but if that is the case then it doesn't please me.
My goal here isn't to just bash Oppo and put down their products. I'm a happy owner of the BDP-83 and I want to see the BDP-93 be solid successor to the 83. I want Oppo to continue to develop and sell quality products at a great cost. I just haven't felt that the process this time around was to Oppo's benefit and if anything it nearly cost them my money and some people I know still might return their BDP-93's. Nothing is ever perfect. I know this. Been there. Done that. Regardless, it's always best to iron out as many wrinkles as possible before launch and I believe Oppo is being premature.
I'm hoping a new firmware update gets released soon to finally deal with unresolved problems and that the BDP-93 goes on to sell even more units than the 83 did. The Oppo BDP-83 topped Consumer Reports last time around along with just about every list ranking Blu-Ray players that I was able to find. It'd be nice to see the BDP-93 do the same thing this time around.
