Uggh. How about pumping up the quality too. Netflix is trying to force us to choose its brand of convenience over quality. The exact opposite of what AVS forum is about and the exact opposite of what a BDP-93 is about. We spend $500 on a blu-ray player for the best premium sound and video. Which means uncompressed 1080p combined with lossless DTS HD or Dolby TrueHd. None of which is available via netflix streaming.

Bill

The person that purchased mine liked the looks of the 83 better.

There have been comments that you need to reboot the 93 when switching SACD output between DSD and PCM.
When I am playing an SACD I hit setup and change these in the audio menu. The change seems to work. Whatever track I am playing restarts and the lights on Oppo and my AVR also change as appropriate.
I'm not noticing any difference in volume between DSD and PCM (which doesn't mean there isn't any difference, it may just not be audible to me )

You're welcome and of course I didn't mention the trusty old analogue outputs, but you could also use these for stereo

My question is, is this player worth it? I have heard nothing but good things about oppo but I have never seen one in person so I am unsure how much of a difference a good video processor can have on a player. I own a vt25 tv so it would be hooked up to that.

The BDP-93 is my first Oppo and I also have mine paired with a Panny VT25. My previous two blu-ray players have been Pannys and IMO; the Oppo 93 is a huge leap forward. The build quality is unsurpassed, the load time is very fast, picture and audio quality are outstanding and Oppo has impressed me as a company who really cares.

Go for it!

Therefore, I would not hesitate to recommend it for the quality of its sound reproduction. We have had some running noise/transport noise issues on some discs. More to come later.

Thanks, I have a pioneer elite vsx92-txh receiver, so I have the option of either HDMI or analog and will try both. Hopefully the OPPO will also stream AIFF files from my mac better than Apple TV currently does. I don't know much about DAC's, but would the DAC in the OPPO improve streaming? That would also be a great bonus, but either way the OPPO seems like it does plenty of things very well. $500 ain't cheap, but seems like a bargain for what you get.

Expect to hit the go button shortly (after way too much homework)....

Don't know if anyone else has mentioned it, but it seems like the 35-106 Beta firmware (the one for A/V Sync issues) also added a "Loading..." animation to the Network Browser (for DLNA streaming). With the current official firmware, often I would click on a file or folder, and the browser would just appear to hang until it actually read in the files in the directory you chose. Now, it will show a "Loading..." indicator to at least let you know it hasn't locked up.

Worth getting the beta firmware in and of itself to me honestly.

Thanks for the reply. I know this is a strange question but will there really be that much of q difference when viewing blu ray content on my vt25 from a ps3 slim to the oppo 93?

I haven't had a single problem finding the power or eject button.
They aren't perfectly flush for a reason, and the eject sticks out a slight bit more than the power.

You'll get used to it. If not, place a clear sticker like these over it:

Not those exact ones, cause I don't know the size, but like it.
A clear beveled sticker.

I've never done this before...so for me it's a big deal.

Intrigued by all this business about backing up my shiny discs...and watching via the BDP-93

Downloded mkvmaker..ripped a DVD bit for bit,,, copied it to portable HDD...and watched form HDD via eSATA port on BDP-93.

Unfortunately it's a DVD I've never previpously seem but ion the main it looked good to very good.

Sound was DD although started as stereo and when I played around (with AVR) lost the soud. Restarted movie and it's all in DD and no dramas. Plenty of pausing and rewinding and turning on/off subtitles and it was perfect all the way through.

Movie was The Men Who Stare At Goats - which my wife hates but me and the 14 yo quite enjoyed

I can relate to that as looks are to be considered when buying a component. But to pay the same price used with no warranty and lesser features I would have go with the component with the warranty and updated features. Resale should also play a part in a purchase as well. So paying $500.00 for a used component that is selling for around $400.00 is not a wise move IMO. But when I sell my 83SE hopefully I will find a buyer as you have.

Why not just keep the setting on PCM then you do not have to bother switching it back and forth? With much discussion on whether there is an audible difference between the two why bother with DSD?

The volume difference between the DSD and the PCM setting of the 83SE through my 886 using HDMI is clearly audible. What are you using for an AVR/prepro? When I was listening to music yesterday the volume level of the 886 was at -15 with PCM and with the DSD setting to match that volume I had to raise the volume to to at least -8. If I get a chance I will check to see if there is a volume setting for DSD within the 886.

I would prefer to use a digital output if I will be using the 886 for 2CH music. But it is another option to consider.

That was the going rate when I sold mine.
I got lucky, because the day after mine sold, the 93 was in stock on Amazon. And that's when everyone with their 83s listed them to buy the 93. Drove prices down.

At first, I too wasn't sure if I liked the looks of the 83 vs the 93. But I'm now convinced the 93 looks better. I love the dual screens too.

Any other streaming services besides what's currently available (Netflix and Blockbuster) are unknown at this point.

But it's almost certain that VUDU will be coming soon:

The downloaded file contains a UPG folder. There are 2 files in the UPG folder: BDP9X.BIN (36070kb), BDP9X.SIGN (1kb).
I get this message: Cannot find a valid firmware upgrade. The main firmware has not been upgraded.
I even tried to burn the UPG folder to a CD, but the result is the same.
What am I doing wrong??

It was around $374 to someone in Italy (took them over a month to get it!). I sold mine before the BDP-93 was widely available for purchase...this was on the tail end of an Ebay gluttony and a relative lack of interest, right at the end of November.

I likely got at least that much use of it and am enjoying the BDP-93 now.

I don't recall that ever being tested. You should presume it is not supported unless someone can state otherwise.

Did you follow the directions on OPPO's web page?

The USB stick should have a top-level USB folder with the two files inside of it.

Yes!!! I did follow the directions.
I have a usb stick with the folder UPG in the root, and the two files inside. Nothing else. Formatted in FAT32 .
Should there not be a 3. file in the folder UPG?
When I try the original Latest Official Release (33-1216) everything works.

Give Oppo tech support a call. It is probably something simple you are missing here and they can walk you through it. USB upgrade is easy.

The UPG folder, including the 2 files inside it, should be copied to the top level of your USB stick. Make sure that writing has finished and that you have either shutdown or "ejected" the USB stick in your computer before you pull it from the computer. Note if you have a ZIP file after the download, you need to unZip it first, which will result in the UPG folder you need to put on the USB stick.

For firmware updates, your USB stick must be formatted as FAT, not NTFS. You can check that on your computer and reformat the stick if necessary (keeping in mind this will erase anything else that's on the stick).

Try getting a fresh download using the link Oppo provided. There will only be 2 files in the UPG folder for the 0106 download. (The 3rd file in the 1216 instructions is the Loader firmware, which does not change this time.)

If you are still having a problem, give Oppo tech support a call and they can walk you through it.

It sounds like it should work. Contact OPPO and describe the problem.

I have downloaded the firmware several times, but no matter what I do It does not work.
However the original firmware update works perfectly
I have written to Oppo, so I guess, I have to wait to hear what they have to say.
Thanks anyway.

I see you are in Denmark. Do you have the European version of the player (BDP-93EU?). If so, you probably need the European version of the 0106 Beta firmware.

Yes!!! I have the EU version. I have thought about if this could be the reason.
Let`s see if OPPO has another link.

I got $549 for my 83, but it had the hardware region free mod. I sold mine as soon as I was able to preorder my 93, so I was without an Oppo for about 2 weeks.
