Of course they can.

I'm sure you must be referring to well constructed double blind test.

Thank you for the info. I guess I'll give it a try anyway. After all I will always have an option to fall back to use my current DAC in case if OPPO's output will be less satisfying.

Example: CD playback
I *thought* that when playing a CD over HDMI that the sound quality is limited by the quality of DAC's in the AVR. In my case it is an Onkyo 705. Is this not true?

In my setup I would be using HDMI2 (oppo) to the 705. HDMI1 to a Pioneer plasma.

Am I reading that the 93 would/could add to my listening pleasure?
Now that I think of it, would I setup CD & FLAC playback to LPCM (for the Oppo to decode) instead of bitstreaming, or am I totally off base?

Appreciate the knowledge
Skid.

Yes you're reading that the 93 will enhance your listening pleasure. Whether you decode in the Oppo and send PCM to your AVR or bistream to your AVR is something you should try and pick what sounds best to you.
All the audio formats I've tried (CD, WAV, FLAC, HDCD, SACD, DVD-A etc) sound great.

I haven't read any information through the post about video playback through network. I have a NAS drive I store video in and was interested to know how well the player does as a media player. Could anyone out there using it in such a fashion provide some feedback as the manual does not say much about the capabilities. Thanks

FWIW, I am actually pleasantly surprised with the -93 and have stopped looking for a dedicated media player as I am more interested in one that actually works vs. one with a pretty interface. BUT...it all depends upon the media formats you are trying to stream, your network, and your NAS. Check out the first post of this thread for the link to the unofficial FAQ for the supported media formats.

Luckily all of my media files are MKV/m2ts/mp4/Divx/mov and the -93 happily plays everything I have thrown at it---even very high bit-rate m2ts files (with HD video & HD audio) over my wired network from a Netgear ReadyNAS Duo with the Twonky Add-on installed. Note: my NAS is not transcoding the files at all, it is simply streaming the files directly to the -93.

YMMV.

It's often discussed here. Search the thread for "DLNA".

Also see this section of the FAQ: Media Files

If you want to play content from a drive over your network you will need a DLNA server setup someplace that presents the drive's content to the Oppo.

See the Oppo DLNA thread for discussion of server choices and setup (note that thread was started for the BDP-83, but the BDP-93 DLNA discussion has been folded into it as well):

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1215071

See the 2nd post of this (BDP-93) thread for a list of file formats supported for network playback, which differs in a few particulars from the file formats supported if you have the drive DIRECTLY connected to the USB or eSATA input jacks of the Oppo.

Search this thread for "DLNA" and you will find tons of posts from people discussing network playback issues and successes.

(ETA: Just tried it, and at the moment Search This Thread for "DLNA" returns 277 posts. Happy reading!)

As a new Oppo customer, i am impressed with the packaging of the unit. I looked for posts to see if anyone has actually posted pictures of the packaging and didn't see any so I thought I would do so in case there are any potential buyers out there that might be interested.

What these pictures don't show, and what is worth pointing out is this:
1. The owner's manual is a nice heavy paper with actual cardboard like front and back covers with embossed (raised printing). Very impressive.
2. There is a wi-fi "N" adapter included - most other companies charge $50-150 for this.
4. There is a nice USB 2.0 pod-type extender for the WiFi to allow you to place the WiFi adapter in an area where it can receive the signal. This isn't expensive and can be obtained at any store but it is a nice touch nonetheless. Shows some thought.
3. The black box is a nice touch - it contained all the accessories. Most companies just stuff these in the box where they are free to move around or have them stuffed in the nooks and crannies of the styrofoam.

Nice touches OPPO!

I'll get it hooked up this weekend and, as promised, see if I can get the 3D working via the switcher I bought. Will post back.

I know there has been a lot of discussion on netflix streaming but I've not seen much on blockbuster so I just wanted to chime in. I decided to give it a try last night just to see how it worked and I browsed the $2.99 movies, found Caddyshack and rented it. It took about 15-20 seconds to to load and begin to play. The playback was actually pretty solid... looked better than dvd and similar to the better quality HD cable broadcasts I've seen on comcast. Audio was clear and I had no sync issues with my Denon 988.

Overall a very pleasing experience and I'm really looking forward to Oppo adding Vudu and hopefully amazon vod for some lengthy catalogs to thumb through.

thanks for all the replies. my drive is a dlink dns-323. i am currently upgrading the firmware which is supposed to allowing streaming of all of those formats. it does have a built in upnp server. i have read it also has the ability to use the Twonky add on. I will try that if my oem one gives me issues. thanks for the info.

P.S. Onkyo's (customer service)sucks

As a FYI, I was in the same boat with the Netgear NAS. The OEM DLNA firmware update supported (on paper) all the desired formats, but m2ts or MKV files with HD audio would not stream to the -93. With Twonky installed on the NAS everything is fine.

Is the Twonky software available as an add-on on Netgear's site?

Is BB in 5.1 or just stereo?

Yes. (FWIW, I'm using Twonky 6.0.30) Twonky Server is free to try for 30 days, then a serial # from Twonky is required ($19.95.)

I am thinking about buying a BDP-93 to replace both my aging Oppo DV-981HD which I use only for DVD-Audio and SACD's and an LG 390 with a single device.

Has Oppo implemented the ability to stream VUDU content yet?

Not yet. VUDU says a contract has been signed and they are showing an OPPO logo on their web page, but implementation is still in process.

QUESTION-

I pulled th trigger today so won't get machine until next week but have a question.

If I have a copy of a Blu ray movie main file folder with all of the files inside onto a hard drive (I have done this already so don't need any advice on this), will it play it on the 93. Will it come up with the menu and let me navigate through the files that way?

From the FAQ: "I have not tried it myself, but I am told that Blu-ray HDMV folders can be copied into an AVCHD directory, which can be played."

Yeh I saw that after I posted. Now I guess i need to figure out how to make a AVCHD folder. I think I found some freeware called multiAVCHD_4.1 that will work.

I will report back.

Actually, what is proposed is even more simple. Create a folder called AVCHD and move the BR directories into it. This is reported to work.

Did you try playing your other region DVDs before applying the patch?
was I suppose to do that. I did when I first got the player.. would say that it was the wrong region. refuse to play. now with the disc. it will play stuff.

I played with twonky for a while and didn't see many benefits over the oem one. think I will just add another western digital media player. my other one had played 99% of what I have thrown at it.
