Best Floorstand Speakers for Music 2009-2010; Buged $1000

Hi Guys ... I need your experience, knowledge and wisdom here if you please...

I am trying to get a home theatre system but I will use it mostly for music, about 80% of time. I have set my mind on Yamaha RX-A1000 and now I have to decide for a pair of floorstand speakers. Now I just want to buy the front ones (maybe the central) ... and I have about 800-1000$ Later I will the surround ones.. I was looking at Klipsch ... but from reviews it seems that they have a metallic sound (because of their Klipsch horn technology) .... which I do not think I will like.

Here are some things I have to keep in mind in my decision:
  • I have a small room 12 x 12 feet
  • I have to listen to low volume ... I have neighbors
  • I listen to all types of music from Country to Classics .. but 70% is Pop and Soft Rock
  • I like the warm sound type ... I do NOT like metalic or high mids
  • they will be powered by Yamaha RX-A1000
  • I need something with a good bass since I will NOT get a sub

Right now I am looking at B&W ... what do you think ? Also ... I live in a small town ... I do not have hi-fi shops around to go try them out and see how they sound ... so I am blind in my shopping ... but I trust you guys that you would be my ears. Thank you ... I appreciate all replays ...

Also, look at PSB Image T5 speakers. Also, in a 12x12 room - good
bookshelves will work too.

Also... Yamaha wants 8 ohms speakers ... PSB Image T5 speakers are 6 .... but thanks anyway ...
the Yamaha A1000 can handle 6 ohm speakers. That's not going to be a problem.

any sugestions on the speakers that I should get afrogt ???

The PSB speakers recommended are good. The larger T65 on clearance would be a good purchase too.

I like Energy RC speakers myself. They're not bright or fatiguing at all but have nice detail. The RC-50 is on clearance for about $650/pr. But finding a matching center may be a little tough. Not a fan of Klipsch or Polk speakers. A little bright for my taste.

The Jamo C605 or C607 may suit you too. Also check speakers from Paradigm, Monitor Audio, Def Tech, Aperion, Ascend and others. You really need to get out and listen to as many speakers are you can. Others will definitely chime in with their favorites.

Since your room is only 12 x 12 bookshelf speakers would work too. Look at speakers like the NHT Classic Three or Ascend Sierra.

thanks afrogt ... so you are saying psb are not so bright ? Paradigm do not sell online ... I have no clue of their price. Bookshelf out of question since I will move my system in 2 years in livingroom.

Why no sub?

no sub sounds more natural ... sub is a compromise .... because makes the low frec sound to come only one direction --> of the sub..... instead of 2 (stereo case) or 5 (in case of 5.1).

hey what do you all think about jamo s606?

also how is the sound fo B&W ? is it bright or warm ? wich brand is consacrated ... or well known for music speakers ?

You can hear the direction of, say, 20-60Hz sound frequencies? I certainly can't

surround system ... is all about the direction of the sound. Closer to reality the sound is ... better experience you have in your living room. In realitiy you do not have a sub ... do you ? ... by ex: it is better to have 5 large speakers than 5 small ones plus the sub

to answer your question ... if you turn up the volume ... I can blinded point toward your sub ... I do not find it so hard to do it.

oh ... and something else ... I do not think are humans that can really hear anything below 80 HZ ... the 20-60 HZ is just marketing ... You would be surprised to find out that most of the people over 20 years old do not hear anything over 18 khz

Do all the sounds you hear in reality come from tower speakers?

You have a lot to learn about how sound works and by extension how speakers and home theater systems in general work.

Now I'm starting to think you are just a troll...

Grifter you are a troll !!! I never said the sound in a room comes only from the speakers .... it is hard to explane to a troll like you ... You must be inlove with your sub ... but remeber ... sub is a compromise !!! just read about theatre sound configuration ... you will see the that their purpose is that the low frec would come out from ever speaker instead of a big sub ... just because it is more natural that way ... this is why they have big speakers ... troll !

Gryfter .... it is the same way in concert sound configuration ... you will never find a sub there ... rather you will find big speakers that would reproduce low frec in left and right ... just read more about it ... you will undertand

also read more about human hearing spectrum ...
I'd in fact prefer having speakers that didn't need a sub to go down to the lowest frequencies (and I don't have a sub in my main music system, but I do in my surround system), mainly due to a sub taking up extra space. But no, I can't hear where the sub is located - though my crossover is set at a somewhat low 40Hz.

Also of note is that while you might be able to point to your sub if only your sub is on, and your speakers aren't (after all there's always some higher-frequency output happening too), you can't while the speakers are on too. Unless you're superhuman, I guess.

yea ... at 40hz I do not think I can hear and point it out either ... peace now
what speakers do you have ? what do you think about them ? what speakers do you recomend for music ?

Actually, you might want to read more about it, I'd suggest starting here: http://www.amazon.com/Sound-Reproduc...0410784&sr=8-1

All speaker choices are a form of compromise, by using towers without a sub you are compromising ideal placement for the different frequency ranges.

Good luck, and the PSB T6 would be a good choice.

Ronaldo ...I have read about it ... everybody says that it is better to have large speakers, if you can, and give up on the sub. Your link it is usless ... did you read the book ? give me a referince I can use. Like I said ... look in theatre or concert setings ... do they have a sub ???

what speakers do you have ? what do you think about them ? what speakers do you recomend for music ?

My music set has Dynaudio Audience 42s, and the surround set has Cambridge Audio S70s as fronts.

While I like the Dynaudios, Dynaudio doesn't have anything in the way of floorstanding models at under $1000, except if buying used. Based on the very nice PSB Alpha B1s that I also have, the PSB Image T5 (or T6) that was recommended earlier might indeed be a nice choice, only ever heard good things about them.

do they have a warm sound ...? I hate the brigt metalic sound ... I will take a look at dynaudios... thanks ... and peace man
post #27 of 47
I stumbled upon the Mordaunt Short Aviano 6's. They seem fit your wants - bassy sound, probably warm. I own the PSB T5's. They're very clear and neutral. So if you're used to warm sound, you'll probably think they're bright.

any sugestions ??? how are B&W ... are they neutral or have a brigt sound ?

OP - You are right and wrong on subs. I agree I prefer large towers for music but also there are few towers (none in your price range) that don't benifit from a good sub. With a good pair of towers you don't NEED a sub but a sub adds that little extra if you want to complete the sound.

However don't worry about that for now. Just get towers you like and someday you will complete the surround system and add a sub. Then you can test for your self and see if you like it. IMHO all home theater setups need a sub.
