Issue with Pioneer VSX-920-K and XBOX 360 component upconversion

Hello all,

I'm having an issue with a Pioneer VSX-920-K and I wanted to see if anyone else is having a similar issue.

When I try to use my XBOX 360 through the component input via 1080p, using video upconversion to HDMI, I just get a black screen. However, when I input 1080i from the Xbox, it's working fine. My TV is an Epson 8350 (1080p) front projector. When I connect the component cables directly to the Epson in 1080p, it works fine.

I found a similar thread for the VSX-1020-K, which I believe has the same video processors, that explains a similar issue. The thread is titled "Pioneer VSX 1020 no picture with XBox 360" in the Audio theory, Setup and Chat forum. I'd post a link but I'm just a long time lurker and my post count is too low. The thread is over a month old with no real resolution. (I feel like the thread author was ok with the lower resolution.)

I'm hoping that someone can confirm that 1080p component can "up"convert to 1080p HDMI. Even better if someone can confirm it with an xbox 360. Just for reference, this is an older xbox360 unit that was made before adding the HDMI output. I called Pioneer support, and they believe it should work, but I'm not convinced they really understand my issue. They recommend that I "change the aspect" of the source, which I didn't think applied to 1080p.

Thanks

From the VSX-920 manual, at the bottom of page 23:

Quote:
The signal resolutions that can be converted from the component video input for the HDMI output are 480i/576i, 480p/576p, 720p and 1080i. 1080p signal cannot be converted.

Hi sjmc, that's a fantastic find. I looked at that page a few times, and obviously missed it. Also, the Pioneer operations group technician had no idea about this limitation as well. I'm just glad to know that my unit's not defective.

Now, to decide if I return it and get the denon avr-1611 or the onkyo ht-rc260 instead. Does anyone know if those support 1080p component? I was hoping to have an AVR that I could basically throw anything at, and it would convert to HDMI.

For what its worth, both the VSX-1120 manual and the VSX-9140 manual state the same limitation, so it is not limited to the 920.

Just get an Xbox with an HDMI port and sell your Non HDMI xbox on ebay.

Probably cheaper then other options.

Xbox Elites and The newer Units have HDMI ports that do 1080p just fine.

Correct me if I'm wrong but component itself maxes out at 1080i even with a direct connection to a tv does it not?
