Everybody is beating me on the arrival of their 90ES. Mine is tracked to arrive tomorrow. I'll get started with fabricating a plate for the ceiling mount holes. I ordered a bunch of 3D BD's from Amazon but they won't be here until Tuesday. I have the 3D demo from DTS to play with until then.

I looked online for a pdf manual for the 90ES and the only ones available are not in English. Still the manual was a bit sketchy on the mounting plate holes. I'll just wait until the PJ arrives and them make a template for the plate.

I watched RED the other night. I was very impressed with the opening scene when there is a long panning around the neighborhood. At 1080p/24 regular (no MotionFlow) you get a decent pan with regular motion stutters. When putting the Motion Enhancer on Low it is a perfect panning event!!! I am amazed how smooth it looks. This is now my new "test" scene. No artifact or predator look around anything. Try it.

LOW motion enhancement is just wonderful. For me, this very feature improvement has enhanced my movie viewing experience significantly.

Motion....my RS20 on 1080i tv programs as well as 1080p/24 bluray as the camera pans horizontally any vertical edges blur which has become most distracting. Is this the problem that the Sony, ( and not the RS 50/60?) has improved?

Hey Don

I made my own mounting plate too - the holes ( from the center of the hole ) are like this:

.....................17,3 cm..........................17,3 cm

Cant talk for the RS50/60 but YES for the 90ES and the improvement is biggest on 1080/24P ( less frames ) materiel.
this is excaly what motionflow/ FI is made for ( smooth, natural movement and sharp picture even under fast panning - like we see with our own eyes !

Thanks for the manual link and the dimensions. I'll pull the Epson down Monday AM and drill the holes in the existing plate. Looks small compared to what I have up there for the Epson. Thanks. Do you know what size screws it takes?

Another example of super smooth panning is the beginning to The Chronicles Of Riddick. The more I test the 90ES the more I am very impressed with it. I am currently working on my Oppo BDP-93 Review which is making me appreciate the 90ES that much more.

Thank you, I do love my RS20, but that artifact has become so annoying that it has diminished my enjoyment of watching it. I was hoping next upgrade was going to be led/laser, but I doubt it will happen in the price range of RS60/90ES by next projector season. I love the black levels and shadow detail on the RS since I watch mostly scifi, action, horror, fantasy which seems to have a lot of low APL scenes. 3D won't hold much interest for me until many of those genre are released in 3D.

I am anxious to read the comparisons with the rs60 to help decide.

If you are tired of it then you really have no choice but to go Sony. Sure the newer JVCs are improved but they still have not caught up with Sony in terms of motion. You will still notice it somewhat on the JVCs of today. I guess it would depend on how tolerable or sensitive you are with the panning scenes...

Oh and Black Levels are exceptional on the 90ES...

First and foremost, I want to thank those of you whom have offered up your personal reviews of the 90ES. After much debate, I dropped anchor and ordered one, which came earlier this week.

My current setup (prior to 90ES) is a 1080p DLP projector, 133" diagonal (2:35:1) home-made screen with sliding vertical masking panels for 16:9, Denon AVR-3808CI (with latest software), DirecTV HR-23-700, Sony BDP-S1700, Control4 system with media player. Bat cave 8 set 16 X 21 room.

On initial installation, I had to bypass Receiver HDMI switching due to not supporting 3D, by running (2) 8 meter HDMI direct to PJ, one for BR and one for DirecTV. After setting up the new 90ES, I was immediately impressed with the improvement in image stability and contrast ratio, as well as a very good black level on both 2D sources. I would have to say that there was a very good improvement over the Sharp PJ I had been using (about 800 hrs on that lamp)

I called up my reference judge (my wife) to verify my observations, and her usual non-chalant approach to anything high tech was instead followed with a WOW. I started a Sony 3D demo DVD I had received, and she was very impressed with the 3D effects, especially with the sports section with the F1 race and the USC vs Ohio St. game, to which I heard a this might actually change my opinion of 3d response. So this might actually be a keeper.

3D playback was generally excellent, with some BR movie demos good (such as polar Express) and other awesome (such as Alice).

One issue I have had is that while I initially had use of the N3D preview channel, last night I had some friends over and the channel said TV does not support 720P 3D offering. I switched to ESPN3D channel with same issue. The 3D PPV channel had a same issue with a different message saying TV does not support 1080p/24. I have tried resetting DirecTV box with same result.

Update, while I had same issue, last night I had recorded a 3D PPV movie (S.O.S. Earth, which we could not view because of pre-mentioned issue) and in the recorded menu the show was listed, so I hit play, and amazingly it played in 3D! So, my question is, has anyone else experienced this issue? And for reference, I have a direct HDMI connection between DirecTV box and PJ, receiver is out of loop (optical cable for sound)

Salutations!

Greg

For some reason the HR21 PRO works fine and so far my newer model is working. Not sure what the hang up is with the 22s and 23s.

hey joe,

how does the 2d image compare between the vplvw 85 and the 90?

Hey Chuck,
The 85 and 90 are very close. The black levels are extremely close (edge does go to the 90) and sharpness is about the same. I do notice more "pop" for sports with the 90 plus the 240hz helps with motion. Still though, the 85 can be had for killer prices lately which make it a helll of a bargain.

Joe,

Thanks for the info.I'm considering the avs B stock.I have the rs 2 right now .Is it that much of an upgrade? Is the real color processing better than previous models? I know there was a color luminance issue with sony's rcp.I also was just considering keeping my rs 2 and buying a duo or radiance mini. What's your thought on the latter?
Our B stock 85s are very attractively priced with a $300 price lowering on Friday. PM me if interested.

I'm thinkin' of an upgrade from my glorious dlp Sharp z20000 to this Sony 90. I cannot A\\B the two. What do you think: will i miss the Sharp? Apart from 3D, the 2D image will be equal, better, worst?

Please advise,

Thx Luigi (NOT the super Mario bro )

I can't speak to the Sony, but I moved from a Sharp 20000 (which I also loved) to a JVC RS40, and the 2D improvements are spectacular. From everything I've read here, the Sony should be a tremendous upgrade for you.

Joe....if the 85 and 90 are very close...and last year the JVC 990 edged the 85 for you....and this year, the RS60 must be at least a bit better...then doesn't that mean you MUST and HAVE to do that comparison....regardless of the financial implications!!

Just baiting you...I fully appreciate this is not a cheap hobby

A quick question. We are going to try to use a Navitar lens to compensate for a long throw distance. I am sure it will work, but I am wondering where the infrared transmitter is located? I do not want to block it with any part of the lens assembly.
Thanks

An expensive hobby with a bunch of cheap hobbyists.

Joe. It didn`t smack you in the face (the fish that is). It heard you were single and it was trying to give you a smooch.
