denon 889 for $300 a good price??

So I have never bought a receiver before and I am now in the market. An audiophile friend of mine offered to sell me his denon 889 for 300 bucks in really good condition. I currently just have a set up of 2 polk monitor 70s for fronts and a polk cs2 center speaker. No sub yet. I will upgrade to a full 5.1 in due time.

Is 300 a good price for this or should I try to get it lower. I was thinking about a pioneer in the 500 range before this offer came along.

I think it is a good price if receiver has latest firmware. There was a known bug in DTS processing in early versions. Firmware in this unit can only be upgraded by Denon service center.

No cost for the firmware update if it's still under warranty and he sends it in himself, but you do have to pay shipping to a repair center if one is not nearby. Although a better option is to try and get the next year's model 2310 which can still be found on clearance at some Best Buy stores for roughly the same price and it can be updated by the owner.
