Viewsonic PGD150 glasses problem

I have three pairs of Viewsonic PGD 150's. I've been pleased with their performance so far, but recently one pair develop a crack in the left arm. A few days later a second pair came up with a crack in the same area, rendering both of them virtually useless. Anyone else having this problem? They haven't had more than five hours worth of use. No children are involved, only adults.

had the exact same problem.arm broke off.funny part is they are suppose to be for classroom use also.not very well constructed.

Yes, same problems for me. Lots of other posts on the same issue in the DLP glasses thread after I reported it.

Do you have a link for that thread?

I emailed Viewsonic and they acted like I was the first one with this problem. Even requested a photo of the crack in the arm before they would issue a RMA.

A buddy of mine used them a couple of days ago and sure enough, cracked arm. If you purchased them from Amazon then process a return and list them as defective. Other than the stupid thin strips of plastic on the bendable part of the arm, they're actually really well built. But that one design flaw is a bugger, and yeah no way will these survive in a classroom environment. I hope viewsonic offers some sort of upgraded part or trade in at some point. Not gonna cross my fingers on that, most likely they'll do a production run revision and call it a day.

Here is a portion of Viewsonic's latest email:

'Due to the nature of your request, we would have to forward your case to our escalation team. Please send us a photograph of the damages on the glasses."

Hilarious. "nature of your request" "escalation team" "send a photo"

I guess I'll have to go through Amazon.

That's unfortunate to hear, I was just about to order a couple of pairs from Amazon now that they're back in stock. At least it sounds like Viewsonic is willing to do exchanges.

BTW are you selling yours on Kijiji? I Just noticed a pair for sale in London.

yes that's me.they will work on the right setup but unfortunately not mine.

Sorry if I missed it but which 3D TV model do you have?

I am looking to get a pair for the hl67a750 Samsung LED, as well as the Acer H5360 projector. I know they'll work fine with the projector...however the TV is the question.

Have 2 of these glasses and was hoping the cracked arm was just a bad batch that I would not have to worry about. Well seemingly out of the blue one of my glasses had a crack appear (well actually they are broken, but the foam padding is holding them in place). I am telling you the other night they were fine and tonight they just broke. About 3/4 of an inch from where the slits are on the side. I sent an RMA request to viewsonic. Purchased on Oct 31st from Buy.com got them on Nov 3rd. So almost 2 months of use (not every day either) and boom. I even handled them with care and placed them in the box after use. You should not have to handle something like this that delicately. Now I know they need some gentle handling as they are electronic and special lenses, but this is sad indeed. They work beautifully.

When you say "foam padding" are you talking about the reddish reinforcing material on the inside of the arms?

This sounds exactly like mine. They first developed a small hairline crack in the arm and then broke completely in the "vent' area. I am curious as to how Viewsonic customer relations reacts to your request for an RMA. In the photo I have the arm taped in order to show the location of the first crack. The second pair still only have the crack they are not broken in the vent area.

It would be impossible to be "more careful" with the glasses than we were. They only handled by three senior adults for viewing four 3D DVD's. That's it. They are incredibly flimsy.

jmcdon7230. Looks like yours broke in two spots. The more common seems to be where the slits are. Mine broke further down on both arms where your other break is at. So sad. And I too took care of them. I get real defensive when Viewsonic questions my care.

pmalter0, yes.

Side note. Went through email with Viewsonic. sent pics. they now referred me to the parts department. started case# with them on phone. sending them my receipt from buy.com. my receipt just so happens not say PGD-150, but says "STEREOGRAPHIC 3DSHUTTER GLASSESPERP1000:1 CONTRAST 2MS" (buy.com has since corrected this). Viewsonic wanted my receipt to have the serial number and the item description. Well I have neither so we will see what happens. Joy!

I'm going through the same runaround with Viewsonic. I have sent them a photo through email and I'm now awaiting a response. They have acted as if mine were the first ones to ever break. I'm not confident of a successful outcome considering their tone.

Well I called back after two hours as the first rep I spoke to said to call back after I sent the email. She did not specify a time. So when I called back I was on hold due to high call volumes. After about 15-20 minutes rep was on phone I told him what was up he said he to look things up. Waited about 5 min and he said I have to call back in about 24-48 hours. He said the queue looked small so 24hours should be enough. Well I am going to wait 48 and call back tomorrow. We will see what happens.

I forgot to mention I sent screenshots of the description with the picture of their glasses as my printed/email invoice did not contain it. Sent them a screen shot of me hovering over the link of the glasses and the url shown and then sent them the url as well as a screenshot of the url showing that I did in fact purchase the product from buy.com.

Well as I was typing I got a email from Viewsonic with an RMA. Guess my crazy email worked. I have to pay to ship and there is various other directions to follow. But here is something I can safely paste without taking up too much more forum room: "ViewSonic will cover the return-shipping costs. The approximate turn around time for a repair is 14 business days from receipt of the defective unit."

I also purchased a 3yr square trade warranty on my glasses, but of course I have to use up the manufacturer's warrany period first. Thank goodness of AVS forums and some other posts out there. In case (I am being hopeful) the glasses break again.

UPDATE #1: My other pair of glasses has just formed a crack in one of the arms. It is not completely broken yet, but it pretty much is one the way there if I use it... Sigh...

UPDATE #2: I had replied to my RMA email for my first pair stating my second pair has a crack in one arm asking if I had to go through the whole process again or could they accept my word and that I would send the reciept for this pair. They replied stating send them the Ser# and receipt. Wow. That would be awesome and shows better signs for customer service!

This isn't a good sign.. I have 3 pair and I handle them with kid gloves but it seems even that isn't good enough..

Amazon is starting to show quite a few similar complaints:

Well both glasses sent to VS. Let's see about $35 to ship via UPS with box/packing and insurance. If I have to keep sending them back over the year warranty I will be better off just buying some other pair of glasses. I insured them in case some other part breaks during transit. The RMA notice states they do not cover any physical damage on shipped returns. They really should do something for their customers if they are this delicate. I would reinforce them, but then I void their warranty and probably square trade's warranty. They really did work great with my setup ... so disheartening.. We will see what happens now. I will post back once I get them back...

If the sub company on Amazon ever gets them in stock again, I have a pair of these coming. Sounds just perfect. What engineering genius / "tool" thought ultra wimpy ear arms was a great idea? How stupid could they be.

I bought 2 pair of Viewsonic PGD-150 glasses and the Mits adapter on Nov 27, 2010. The glasses from Amazon. The adapter from Electronics Expo. I received everything about Dec 7. The combination works wonderfully with my 2009 Mits 73" DLP. We used 6 times prior to the BCS game Monday, Jan 10, 2011, night.

When we took them out for the game, the plastic on the right ear stem was broken through on one of the glasses. The rubber backing was holding it on. When not in use, the glasses are kept in the original boxes surrounded by foam; the boxes kept under a table away from any traffic. The plastic just broke, like so many others here have experienced.

On Tuesday, Jan 11, 2011, I contacted Viewsonic Customer Support hoping they would quickly replace them. Well, after 4 days, 3 reps and a couple promises of a resolution time, I received the following from Viewsonic:

Dear Mr. Durnin:

Thank you for contacting ViewSonic Technical Support. The pictures have been reviewed and the glasses would need to be sent to our repair depot for evaluation. The glasses also have a serial number which is needed to setup the RMA.

Should you require additional assistance or would like to speak to a Technical Support Engineer directly, please contact our Technical Support Dept. at 1-800-688-6688 and choose the Technical Support menu option. A Technical Support Engineer will gladly assist you.

Thank you for choosing ViewSonic.

Best regards,

When I called Tech Support to inquire about this process, I was informed that I would need to ship them to Walnut, CA at a my expense, they would "evaluate" whether the break was due "customer induced" and then determine they would replace them. If not, they would return the glasses to me. When speaking with the Tech Support rep, she had seen the pictures and acknowledged that there was no visual evidence of any abuse, she described the frame as "pretty".

So, 4-5 days to ship to Walnut, CA, 10-14 days to get answer, 4-5 days to return them to me in FL. If I choose this option, in all likelyhood, I will end up with my broken glasses back after the return window for Amazon closes. The rep also acknowledged this possibility.

I am not a happy camper. I am entering this using a Viewsonic monitor, my second and last monitor from Viewsonic...

I will update this saga with my experience with Amazon...

Update: Amazon is replacing the glasses, no questions asked! They are shipping a new pair while I am returning the broken pair. No waiting. No hassle. Guess with whom I will continue to do business?
Wow, I can't believe the horror stories I'm reading about these glasses! I currently have 3 pairs (2 unopened), and so far I haven't seen any indication of cracking, but I guess I should play it safe and just return them to Amazon before the 30 return window expires...

Too bad as the work great, and fit fairly well. Much better than the nvidia glasses.

EDIT: It looks like I might have a longer return window than I thought. I'll probably keep the glasses for another week or so and see how they hold up...

Does Amazon.com have an extended return policy for the holidays?
Yes. Items shipped by Amazon.com between November 1, 2010 and December 31, 2010, may be returned until January 31, 2011, for a full refund, subject to our other return guidelines listed in our Product Return Policies Help pages.

Well both arrived at CA. I see one is already on its way back to me after being there a day, but I did not get any email/call about whether they were replaced, fixed, or sent back as is. Scheduled to be back here in FL on the 20th. They truly did work superb with my setup.
