But for some reason soem videos won't play in XBMC-- my TV goes blank and says "This display mode is not supported." These same videos play fine when I'm not in XBMC, and in fact, when I have the XBMC menu up the videos are playing fine behind the menu and displaying. So what gives?

I was originally thinking this was an HDCP issue but since the video plays in VLC that doesn't seem likely to be the case.
I actually read your post again, and that sounds exactly like what was happening. I'm pretty sure that should fix it.

Are you using Ubuntu? It sounds like the xbmc upgrade has killed the audio. Try a reinstall of alsa.....

sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-generic

What are my options for watching/recording live tv or cable/satellite within xbmc. I cut the cord to save money and would just need OTA right now but im sure I will use cable/satellite in the future.

Are there any options beside myth tv? Do any of you use that and how well does it work and does it work with any tuners, such as the ceton card?

If my only other option is to use WMC for watching/recording tv, are there any Plugins to access it directly from xbmc, so its more seamless?

I'm using the XBMC addon Mythbox. It requires that a functioning Myth backend be available (I used Mythbuntu 10.10).

I'm getting OTA now and can record, schedule, etc. Found a few minor bugs, but it'll do until PVR functionality makes into the core program.

I put it in the filename "ghostbusters.bluray.1080p.mkv" but this will proabably not help you.

I would probably cross post this question on the Aeon thread over at xbmc.org as you may just be missing a skin setting.

Sorry mate, I don't believe you... I mean, this statement can't be any more true:

The XBMC team is also excited to be a part of Sony's Home Theater and Consoles division, where free-thinking developers are regarded highly.

Does anybody have any idea why the gmail plugin wont recognize my email adress and password. I know I'm entering both correct. I enter both, then it loads for a minute and says error connecting to Gmail.

quick question. I have a copy of movie that came with 3 additional shorts. When XBMC displays this I see the movie listed 4 times. What I want is to see the movie listed once, then when I click on the movie I go in and am offered 4 choices ( the movie or each of the 3 additional shorts )

How do I configure xbmc to do this?
You need to update the movie.nfo file. There is included in there. This is for filing box sets together under one icon. Put the same title in there (movie trilogy) and XBMC will group them all together.

As a side note, my system had a difficult time with this and XBMC didn't see my sets until I also removed movie.
Awesome! I've been wanting to set up movie collections for a while now, but from what I had read, didn't think it was possible from the library. I think this would be very helpful to add to the first post.

After reading your post I quickly found this wiki on Movie Sets: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Movie_Sets

Thanks mbbransc!

With the latest version of XBMC do I still need another player to get bitstreaming to work on Bluray mkv's so my receiver can decode these?

What's the preferred method for this?
Yes. Use MPC-HC as an external player.

In Windows 7, create a playercorefactory.xml file in C:\\Users\\HTPC\\AppData\\Roaming\\XBMC (change "HTPC" to whatever user name you're using in Windows). Put the following in the file:

Code:

            c:\\Program Files\\Media Player Classic - Home Cinema\\mpc-hc.exe

         "{1}" /fullscreen /close
         false
         false
         none

So XBMC can't just pass the raw signal via HDMI to my receiver? I assumed that's how it should work.

If you are talking about bitstreaming HD Audio then XBMC cannot do it currently. When the audio engine is implemented it will be possible, but for now if you want to bitstream HD Audio you need to use a 3rd party solution like MPC HC

OK, I think I am confused.

What's bitstreaming? Is that the same, or different, than passing the raw signal to my Onkyo for the receiver to decode?

if I want my receiver to play TrueHD, DTS, Dolby Pro Digital etc. can't I just send it the raw signal? I'm using an i3 with a h67 sandybridge motherboard.

I think I'm missing something here or just confused in general.

Yes, bitstreaming is sending the untouched audio to your Receiver to decode. XBMC is not capable of doing this, it will instead decode the audio and send through, or simply send through the core. Ideally you want the DTS(MA)/ TrueHD track to sent through untouched to your Receiver to process there (the way to confirm is that the TrueHD or DTSMA logo should light up on your receiver)

Your hardware is capable of doing this, just XBMC is not currently. The easiest way is to use a 3rd party program like MPC HC which you can have launch from XBMC:
