Add me to the list of people who cannot change Showbiz default settings and have them stick.

A coax digital output does look like an rca connector. It is my understanding that toslink and optical are the same since you are using light to carry the signal over a fiber optic cable

All three would be cool, but if you're constrained 1080i would be the most interesting IMO.

Sure, why not.

TOSLINK is optical S/PDIF, coax S/PDIF is the RCA type (same cable as analog audio/composite video).

np, I should be able to put them up later today.

480i
720p
1080i
Thanks. The difference is certainly noticeable playing those through my PS3, though at 480i the smoothing provided by the AVC recompression may actually be preferable to the MPEG-2 blockfest. Once it gets up to 1080i I much prefer the more raw form.

I put together a quick writeup on the Colossus today. There are two bugs I have encountered, wonder if anyone else has seen these:

- Using Showbiz to capture recordings off my STB, when I am done capturing a recording and go to capture a new recording I hear a pop and then I lose sound. I have to close out of Showbiz and reopen, and then I get audio back.

- This one is very strange. When I capture with Showbiz I use the AVCHD option to create a 1080i ts. I later take this ts file, drop it into handbrake, and reencode. This always worked flawless with the original HD PVR + Total Media Extreme. However, with the Colossus ts files I get an error when I try to use with handbrake (a message telling me that the file is corrupt). I end up having to demux the ts file with tsMuxeR, remux to mkv with mkvmerge, and then the mkv plays nice with Handbrake. Anyone else seen this?

- have not run into your first issue

- yes, Handbrake does not like the .ts files. I use ConvertXtoDVD for some other things and tried it here and it has no problem with the .ts file

- and the mp4 file option I found played fine in VLC and on my Popcornhour, but you cannot fastforward or jump ahead in the file with either of those devices...hence the reason I settled on .ts

What is weird is that Handbrake had no issue with the .ts file the HD PVR/Total Media Extreme would create, so I am not sure what ShowBiz/Colossus is doing differently

Is your audio in the .ts files in AC3 or AAC format?

I liked the HD PVR/Total Media Extreme because it would let me choose AC3 or AAC audio when using the RCA audio inputs. Colossus/ShowBiz only records in AAC when using the RCA audio inputs, and AC3 when using the optical audio input.

If there's a way to change the audio format in ShowBiz, I haven't found it.

AC3. I use optical to get 5.1, same process with the HDPVR/Extreme and Colossus/ShowBiz

Nice article. I have a question about .ts files. I used to save in that format. I now mostly use m2ts. I cannot really tell a difference visually. What would be the advantage of using one over the other, other than the fact that m2ts would be a native blu-ray format?

TS and M2TS are functionally equivalent. The only difference is that M2TS contains some extra information in the first few bytes of the packet.

Yes. And I would love to hear a review from a user on the media center functionality.

Anyone volunteering?

1. How is it possible that this thing can record encripted signal thru the HDMI?

2. Most dish or cable receiver have only one HDMI output. So you can only do one at time. Right?

It can only record unencrypted HDMI signals. I guess not all cable/sat boxes encrypt their HDMI output
post #139 of 517
afaik the hdmi ouput essentially follows the rules that are passed by the copy flag i.e. if its copy freely its unencrypted, if its anything else its encrypted. What channels are flagged what will depend on your cableco.
Is there a listing of who does and who doesnt?
Can we get a review?

How well do this thing work within media center?

Stability - quality of the image - ...

The sound is suppose to be only 2 channel for now with the beta drivers. What about synchronization issues? Is there any?

Thanks for the info.

That eazy Dishnetwork and DirecTV are only one's allow for copy freely its unencrypted HDMI output to work every one else that on cable system may as well forget it they have used Component video input.

It works for most channels/programs on Comcast (Chicago) as well, but since it's easy to get a HD box with YPbPr (not sure it's possible to get HDMI only here) and the difference is negligible I'm not sure it's worth the risk.

Same here. This really defeats the purpose of having the option to cap up to 20Mbps. Anyone hear anything about a fix?

The newest drivers should store the values and also unlock the crossbar for almost every input combination (HDMI Audio can still only be routed with HDMI Video). There will be an updated rev of ShowBiz that enables the second enhancement, not sure if that is required for the first to work.

Thanks, I installed my card a week ago and the new driver is 5 days old.

Hi,

I recently installed my new Colossus based HTPC and I've set MediaCenter with DVBLink.

All works well except that the videos coming from the Colossus are not smooth or are "choppy". Both with Recorded or live tv.

I have uploaded a small file from my recorded tv directory here:
http://linkmypdf.com/colossus/Hockey.wtv
If you play it, in mediacenter or simply using mediaplayer, at 0:12, if you look at the text on the ice you'll see that it moves from right to left but it looks like if some frames were skipped.

I'm looking for suggestion on what to look for or test to do?
- Could it be related to DVBLink?
- Could it be the 1080i / 720p setting my my sat receiver ( Can version of the Vip211 )?
- Any settings in the Colossus drivers that could be changed? if so where are they?

Thank you!

I have found it works fine for me, but after a while it will skip maybe 2-3 times per minute. If I reboot the PC it works fine again for a while to transfer 1 or 2 shows from my DVR. Did this for both Satellite box DVR transfers and VCR captures. I just got in the habit of rebooting after each one.

Hi. I somehow missed your original post until someone replied to it today.

That choppiness would drive me crazy, too, and I hope it has since resolved for you.

I have not had that problem with my card. Playback stability has always been excellent for me. I have gone to the Hauppauge website to get the latest drivers a couple of times, but even with the original driver, I did not get the choppiness in your sample.

I would certainly start a support ticket with Hauppauge if this issue persists.
