Hauppauge Colossus HD-PVR - Page 18

At this point I just want to record any content off of my DTV 2400 box, whether it be with my 2250 or my new Colossus. Right now I am using HDMI to connect the 2400 to the Colossus, and I believe that is the reason I am getting a "weak TV signal" with WMC. My problem is that if this is true I do not know what cable to use from the DTV 2400 to the Colossus.

Hi,
Does anybody know if the Colossus can be used as a normal video capture device?
I'm trying to use the Colossus as a video source in Resolume, but I can't get any images out of it.
Other capture devices like my webcam or a digital video converter (http://www.ionaudio.com/products/det...ideo-2-pc-mkii) work just fine.

How do I know if the media I am trying to capture from my DVR is encrypted???

Hi everyone, I just bought a Hauppauge HD PVR, the component audio/video version..... not the newer HDMI version. I chose the model with the component inputs after reading here sometime ago that trying to capture from my DVR via HDMI might not be doable if the media is encrypted. The only problem that I am finding with using this component audio/video input version is that there is no way to capture the audio portion in 5.1. You can try connecting an optical cable from the DVR to the Hauppauge PVR, but then you can't use the component video inputs on the PVR in tandem with the optical audio input. The PVR unit just simply won't allow this to happen when I go to physically capture the recordings from the DVR.

Now, I'm wondering if I should just get the HDMI version of the Hauppage PVR. The only problem is that I don't know if what I am trying to record is encrypted or not. I'm not trying to capture movies, only live performances of my favorite band that I've recorded. One concert is from the HDNet channel, and most of everything else I want to capture is live performances from Good Morning America, late night television talk shows (David Letterman, Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien, etc.), awards shows, etc.

Is there any way to know if what I want to capture via the Hauppauge PVR is encrypted or not without buying the HDMI version of the PVR and finding out it won't record the media because it's encrypted? Thanks a ton!

If it's encrypted it won't play properly in the Total Media Extreme capture module. The video will be messed up. I recommend you take the HD PVR back and get the Colossus which has HDMI as well. It also has two dongle cables for component input and outputs as well. The power supplies on the HD PVR don't seem to last very long. They are notorious for going out after a few months of moderate use.

I originally had an HD PVR, which I was happy with, but ended up returning it for the Colossus because I didn't want to have another external device. The Colossus is an internal PCI-x card that also has an HDMI input for recording from unencrypted sources. I'm not sure how you get your programming, but I have Directv and use their HD DVR. I always record the program to the DVR first and capture it to the Colossus later. Most of Directv's channels are not currently encrypted except for their PPVs. I always use the HDMI and that captures both video and AC3 sound for Dolby Digital 5.1 if applicable. I'm not sure if cable encrypts their stuff or not, but even if they do, you can use the component dongles that come with the Colossus. Plus the Colossus is cheaper than the HD PVR.

With the latest driver (30151), I've notice a reduction in what settings show (don't ask which, I just installed, quickly checked it out, then upgraded). From the new description-of-fixes, I expect I'll stay with this most recent (for "Fix for video freeze after 10-20 minutes" among others).

I did notice that there is a "sharpness" control that cannot be adjusted. I also read of a "noise reduction" registry item. It would be great if we could adjust these, as Colossus right now produces a "soft" picture (someone mentioned the chipset used in Colossus is the same / family of a previous product that was also "soft"). Worse, it's soft in BOTH SD and HD captures:

End Of The Age broadcast with SD-card capture compared to Colossus-SD capture (both from S-Video inputs) -- note in the magnified area that the pin-stripes of the speaker's suit are either soft-smoothed or de-noised completely away.

Starship Troopers BR snapshot compared to BR Colossus-HD capture (from component input) -- note in the magnified area that the film grain is either soft-smoothed or de-noised completely away.

Any capture-settings / registry-tweaks to correct this?

Hi everyone,

I bought Colossus model 01414 recently.

I have Sat Box with the following outputs:

Video Out.
Audio Out (Left)
Audio Out (Right)
Digital Audio (Coaxial)
Digital Audio (Optical)

HDMI

As you know the Component Video In for Colossus is (YCrCb), so I connected Video Out Cable between my Sat Box and one of the Video In cables from Colossus (The blue cable namely).

And I connected a Toslink Cable between my Sat Box and Colossus.

I Opened ArcSoft ShowBiz to start capturing.

I picked the AVCHD setting and started to capture.

Everything worked OK and I could even capture over 1 Hour from all the channels SD or HD. It didn't matter.

Also, the Captured Audio was in Dolby 5.0 format.

Now, the problem is although my Sat Box HD setup resolution is set to: 1080i the captured video resolution is set to: 720*576 no matter what I'm doing with the settings.

My question, could this be due to my Sat Box is not having Component Video out (YCrCb) or is it related to something else?

And if I tried to capture through HDMI using HDCP stripper is there going to be any difference.

In case you haven't come across this yet, I can see 2 issues:

1 - "composite video out & in" are standard definition only; to get high definition, you must use "component out & in" (all three cables) or HDMI (unencrypted directly, or through a powered splitter for the HDMI handshaking)

2 - Colossus captures only at the resolution of the incoming signal, regardless of the "resolution setting"
