Official Toshiba XXE200U Owner's Thread (32E200U, 37E200U, 40E200U)

I couldn't find many threads about this great mid-line model from Toshiba. I just picked up the 37" from Best Buy on sale for under $500. It definitely stands out from the competition (samsung, sony, LG, etc.) with superior black levels and more natural colors, as well as more inputs than anyone else (4 HDMI, component, 2 composite, and VGA).

Toshiba Specs and Support

JP1 upgrade

Discrete codes (the code in the 4th column is the OBC in hex using protocol NEC1, device 64)

My JP1 upgrade has tons of discretes for on/off, inputs, picture modes and picture sizes. It should work with most Toshiba TVs. No discrete codes are in the harmony database for this model, but some of these are in the harmony database for Toshiba model CT-90276.

This tv needs about a 3 second delay after power up before it will accept any commands.

Follow the support link for the manual and latest firmware.

I didn't do much calibration wise since the Sport mode settings out of the box looked pretty good to me.

Here's the pronto hex and EFCs for all the discrete codes I know:

Here's the procedure for sending the above commands for learning purposes using many cable tv and one-for-all type remotes (not the original Toshiba remote):

- On the universal cable or one-for-all remote, Press TV

- Hold the Setup button for 2 blinks

- Press 1056 (or 11056 if your remote takes 5-digit setup codes), 2 more blinks means success

- To send any command above, tap the Setup button followed by the EFC. On the last digit the command is sent. Hold the last digit for a longer duration signal. Most newer remotes take 5 digit EFC's, so prepend 00. For example to send the HDMI 1 signal, tap Setup then quickly press 00219 (or just 219 depending on your remote). When you press (or hold) 9, the command will be sent.

This is handy for teaching another universal remote. If you want to permanently assign these functions to buttons on the cable or one-for-all remote, see the manual programming instructions at the wiki in my signature.

I read on an earlier thread about a problem with the 37E200U working with a 8300HD cable box. Anyone else had this problem? This is the box I will be using and I was thinking about pulling the trigger on a 37E200U this weekend. Now I'm a little concerned.

Anyone else have the Toshiba 37E200U / Scientific Atlanta 8300HD combination?

Thanks

In case you don't get a definitive answer, here's my 2 cents. I'd say a fundamental incompatibility is highly unlikely. It's more likely there was something wrong with that poster's box or cable. That same thread also had a reported problem with Dish. I have Dish, and everything works fine. If there were widespread problems, you'd probably find more than one post. In any case, I'd get one from a local B&M to be on the safe side.

Does anybody know if the 40E20U and 40E200U are actually different models or just different model numbers for different stores? Is there a difference between these actual TV's?

I like this TV. I looked at the picture quality in the Future Shop and it looked very good to me, especially for the price. It's actually bigger than I need for my bedroom, but for what it costs vs a 42" 720p plasma, the black levels, contrast and picture quality are great for the money and I can get rid of my bulky akward and heavy 20" CRT TV. BB and FS have them on sale in Canada, with FS price being lower, so I could price match at BB for another couple bucks. Staples also has a 40E20U for similar price.

What's the difference in the models? Unfortunately, even if the models are essentially identical, I think the different model numbers eliminate the ability for me to price match at Staples.

According to the manual, the 20U and 200U are identical. FWIW, currently at best buy the 37" is $450 and the 40" is $550.

Just picked up the 40E200U. It's $500 at Sears (in Ontario at least). Very pleased so far, but my last TV was a 27" from the early 90s so I'm easily impressed.

One complaint I have is the USB port, what I THOUGHT it did was let you plug in a usb stick with some video files and then it would play those video files, but actually all it does is just displays pictures and play music off the usb, no video. That's kinda stupid, why would anyone want to view pictures or play mp3s on a tv anyways. I don't suppose there's some kind of hack that will enable it to play avi files off the USB?

I'm trying to figure out if the screen on these TVs is matte or glossy... ALL documentation on the internet seems to avoid this topic. I just don't get it... this is probably the first thing that rules out a TV for me (if it's glossy)... do people really like watching themselves instead of the program they are viewing?

If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated...

It's matte. If possible, you should check one out at your local sears or best buy.

I have a 37E200U unit and want to apply the 12-04 firmware upgrade downloaded from the Support link in mdavej's initial post. Double-clicking this 37E200U_003 file yields another file (STC37TGFB-LG37.ecc) which I copied to an empty flash drive. Is this the correct upgrade file? I was expecting to see a number of different extracted files and folders instead of a single file which I cannot open and am hesitant to insert the flash drive containing this file in the TV USB port. A Google search of files with the .ecc extension isn't that helpful.

Any assistance or guidance will be greatly appreciated.

That's correct. Just plug in the stick with the ecc file and turn on the tv. Then just follow the prompts.

I dont know if prices are allowed in this forum but noticed others have prices they paid. I hope I am not breaking any rules. I just bought this Toshiba 40E200U from the egg place for a total price of under $430. shipped with no tax to Pa. It seems to be a great deal for a 40" 1080p set even though it is pretty basic with 60 Ghz refresh rate that so many seem to complain about if you are a gamer with a PS3. I bought it for my 9 year old nephew knowing what I was getting trying to find as many forums at AVS on this model. The reviews seem to be very good with just a mention of the sets built in speakers not being the best but few I know care about that. The sale price which was under $400. plus fast 3 day or less shipping is what made me buy one after reading the reviews. Just wanted to help anyone who is looking for this model that seems to be a decent set if you can live with its sorta crappy remote and 60 Mhz refresh rate. It is already scheduled to be delivered Tuesday by UPS after ordering it yesterday, the day after Christmas.

I can't find anything close to that price anywhere. The place you mentioned is $629. Are you sure it's not a refurb? Please post a link or PM. Thanks.

Toshiba 26C100U 26" LCD...thought I'd post here even though it's a C series instead of E

Bought this about 3 weeks ago...PQ is good for the set it is, but w/ pictures that have a bright solid color throughout the frame there are about ten vertical strips, each about 1/2" wide where rhe color intensity fades a bit.

At first I thought it a problem with the screen, but after viewing in SD mode, the bars occur un the same points on the frame.

Any suggestions, or is there a thread more in line w/ this question

Decided to setup an account after finding a couple of threads on the 37E200U. We got one earlier this month from a local Best Buy. Initially paid $499+tax then got the difference back when I saw the price was dropped to $449. So far I have had only one small issue come up. Sometimes while my daughter is playing a game on the Wii (connected with the regular composite cables in video slot #2), sometimes the screen will flicker a little bit. It doesn't happen alot and I don't know yet if having game mode on matters. I have not had any issues with the Xbox 360 (component connection) or with direct tv (composite in video 1). Anyone else experience this?

Also didn't know there were firmware updates or that it was possible to update the firmware until I found this thread. Was going to pickup a usb drive to use with the blu-ray player so now I have another reason to get a drive.

I haven't seen your problem myself, but from your connection descriptions, you're definitely missing out on better PQ. You should be using component with the Wii and HDMI with the Xbox. If your DirecTV box is HD, you should be using HDMI there too. You can get good HDMI and Wii Component cables really cheap at monoprice.com (about $3 each).

My sister bought one yesterday for 429. You have to apply promo code "EMCZNNT74", then the price will drop to 399 plus 30 shipping. I think the code expires 1/1.

I bought a 37" e200u at Best Buy just before Christmas for $449. It's primary function will be that of a computer monitor. Wow! What a computer monitor. The newspaper on line is just as large as the actual newspaper. But I also hooked up my Blu-Ray player to the set and watched few minutes of a Blu-Ray(Ridley Scott's Robin Hood) at 1080P from a distance of about three feet. To my modest surprise, it easily eclipses the picture quality on my primary TV (a ten-year old RCA 38" HDCRT which puts out a better picture than anything but a Pioneer plasma or one of the better full-array LED-LCDs).

An even greater surprise was the complete absence of the things that have kept me from considering LCD before this. No soap opera effect, no clay face, no graineness and ,if there was any motion blur, I couldn't spot it in either the blu-ray or a quarter's worth of an NFL broadcast. From a 60hz set no less.

It powers up silently. No humming or Samsung-like buzzing from the low voltage power supply and it stays that way. I started with the standard picture setting, reduced the contrast to 80 and the sharpness to near zero. The result, to my eyes anyway, is a picture I only thought possible from a top-rated plasma. Based on these results, if my beloved RCA bit the dust tonight, I'd have a 55" G300u(120hz) in its place tomorrow...for less than a thousand bucks (ABC Warehouse)! I simply don't need any more picture quality or product quality than this.

My Xbox is a 2006 model so no HDMI option there (unless there's an adapter or another option). Would like to swap out for a newer 360 at some point. Also have not upgraded to Direct TV's HD option yet.

Thanks for the monoprice link! I'm in need of a HDMI cable for the blu-ray player and if my cable buddy doesn't come through then I'll order from monoprice. $29.99 was the cheapest HDMI cables that the Best Buy I bought the player from had in store!

Does the 40E200U do 4:4:4 decoding? Any information on input lag and gaming performance?

I'm looking to get either the 40E200U or the LG 42LD450. The latter is known to be excellent in regard to input lag and as a PC monitor.

Thanks!

I picked up the 37E200U for 399.99 @ BB. I had them price match the Conn's sale price. For that price I like what I'm getting in the set, it is a pretty good value compared to other 37 inch LCD's.
Picked up a 32E200U as well as a 40E200U. Satisfied with the sets overall, but can't seem to land on some good color/brightness/contrast/temp settings. Anyone been able to get to a natural look with skin-tones? Thanks in advance.

I like color, tint and sharpness in the middle, brightness and contrast both max, and temp cool. I turned off all noise reduction and left dynamic contrast on. Nothing looks good if you're too close, but 6 ft or more away, it looks fine. I find this to be true with all LCDs.

What is the difference between the 40FT1U and the 40E200U? I have only noticed the 40FT1U has one fewer HDMI inputs. The 40FT1U is sold at Costco and some times they have their own product number so other stores don't have to price match. I am trying to decide between the 40FT1U or the Sony 40EX. Looking at both of them in the grimy lighting of Costco, they both look excellent, but the Toshiba is $50 less.
We have both the Toshiba 32E200U and the Sony 46EX400. Both are true 1080p 60Hz and excellent PQ but the Sony has superior video processing. There are some features of each that I like and dislike compared to the other. The Sony certainly looks more natural. OTOH the Toshiba is in the bedroom so we're pretty close to it and can't see any image defects. Overall I am pleased with both and would recommend either one depending on your needs.
If anyone has calibration settings they can share it would be appreciated. I can't get the colors to look right on the 40E200U. There seems to be a lot of black crush. I'm frustrated w/ the color settings. Can't dial it in.
It is difficult if not impossible to achieve natural skintones with this TV afaik. However, it is the only set I have with the ability to pillarbox... so when TBS-HD for example broadcasts a 4x3 program stretched out to 16x9, so that everyone looks like dwarfs, I can adjust the aspect ratio. I'm shocked that of the 4-5 different brands of HD sets I own, this is the only one with that capability.

The latest firmware update appears to have fixed the issue with the Wii (post #15).
