Newbie to SACD: Questions, LG BX580 support? OR player recommendation

Hi everyone,

I think I'm in need of a new hobby and I've always loved music, so I think I'm going to take the plunge into SACD music. I'm new to it, so please let me ask a few questions and any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Current setup:
Onkyo TX-SR606 Receiver

LG BX580 Blu-ray player

Still looking, any decent recommendations?

Simple questions:
  1. What common features do I need to look for in a SACD player?
  2. What is the best way to get SACD audio to a receiver, via bitstreaming DSD over HDMI?
  3. Are all SACD players treated equally if they only bitstream DSD (no analog use)?
  4. No where on the website or logos for the Onkyo receiver does it mention support for SACD, but in the manual on page 30 it says it can stream DSD and page 65 it says DSD is a listening mode, I'm assuming it's supported?
  5. Similarly, no where on the website or manual does it say that my LG Blu-ray player supports SACD, but on www.blu-ray.com (http://www.blu-ray.com/LG-BX580/12929/?show=specs) and www.bestbuy.com (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/LG+-+3D/...x580&cp=1&lp=1) under the specs both say that it supports SACD. Does anyone have any experience if it does or not?
  6. If it doesn't support it, I'm looking for an SACD player under $300 that will interface well with my Onkyo receiver (I'm guessing bitstreaming DSD over HDMI is the best per question 2). I think I saw someone mention Sony BDP-S570, which I can get for $140 or a Onkyo DV-SP506 for $299. Any recommendations? Maybe offer a cheap solution then one closer to the $300 limit.

Thank you for your help, I'm very excited to get started. I already order my first SACD and it's in the mail as we speak.

1. Same as in any other player.
2. Yes.
3. Pretty much. There are differences but they are small and are seen at wide price differentials.
4. Yes. However, it will convert DSD to PCM internally.
5. I really doubt it plays SACD except for the CD-quality Redbook track, not the hi-rez tracks.
6. Those two will do.

Thanks for the reply! Does it convert it to PCM because I have an inferior receiver or do they all do this? Also, is it worth trying to get a player that also supports DVD-A (since I think the Sony doesn't support it)? Like the Pioneer DV-610AV-K for $120?

I was afraid of that. Unfortunately I made the decision to start an SACD collection a month after I bought the Blu-ray player, otherwise I would have chosen the Sony.

Anyone else with feedback?

There are some that offer a "Direct" mode which runs the DSD directly to the DAC and volume control without conversion. However, all AVRs and prepros must convert DSD to PCM in order to use any of the DSP features including bass management, postprocessing, roomEQ, etc.. So, conversion is no biggie.

Do you have any DVD-As? There are so few coming out that it is all but a dead medium. Depends on your musical interests.

I've had Handel's Messiah for years now, but I think I've only every listened to it from the DVD/Video track.

If you have a chance to get a hold of a universal player, or at least a player that is compatible with SACD and DVDA, just go for it. You may have a hard time getting hold of DVDA but it won't hurt having a player that plays them if you find that format.
