New subwoofer for a first time HT

This is my first post, and I'm looking for some basic advice. I've recently made the leap from a basic HTIB to a more substantial (though still pretty affordable) home theater. My current setup:

Yamaha RXV765 Receiver
Front: Polk Monitor 70s
C: Polk CS20
Surrounds: Polk RC85i
Rears: Polk R80i
Sony PS3
Microsoft XBOX360
HD DVR Cable box

I'm currently running the remainder from a previously purchased HTIB for a sub (Yamaha something or other). It's output is only rated at 50W RMS, and I can barely tell it's on in my >4500 cu ft room. I'm finally looking to upgrade the sub to something more substantial. I had originally been looking at the Polk PSW505, but after reading this forum quite a bit, I decided to bite the bullet and go for something really substantial that I can use for a while without getting the itch to replace it. I've been getting really geared up for this new HSU vtf-15h, but I'm worried that I may be getting way more sub than I need for my current setup. Any input on whether this is actually a legitimate concern would be greatly appreciated.

Currently I use the system for about 70% movies, 25% games and the remained a mix of music. Also, I do plan on upgrading the other items as my budget allows, but right now the weakest link in the setup is the subwoofer, by far. Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the forum. The VTF15 would be a great investment on your part. You will find on this subwoofer forum we like to say "You can never have too much of a sub." In other words you can always turn the volume down on powerful sub but you never can get more output out of a 50 RMS sub like you presently own. So go for it. Call HSU and ask for Pete.

Thanks for the response, htg. I guess my biggest concern is that I've got a very weak sub right now, and I'm afraid that I've over-hyped the Hsu in my head and that it won't match my expectations when it arrives.

Oh it will match your expectations. Just ask the guys who have already invested in the new sub. I have not heard one yet but since I have been an owner of Hsu products for almost two years now I can comfortably recommend the VTF15. Plus Pete @ HSU and I talk often about Audio stuff and I trust him and his opinion. I have no plans to purchase the VTF but if I was in the market, like you are, then I would also entertain buying the new sub.

I am confident that it will exceed your expectations.

+2. With that size space, the vtf15 would be a great choice.

C'mon guys he haven't had any real sub.

In order to save him money, a VTF-3 MK3 will more than suffice...

This is my primary concern. I'm dropping a lot of money (especially in comparison to my previous purchases), but is a couple of hundred bucks worth trying to save? This is what I've been wrestling with for a couple of weeks.

He's got a really large room. And if it's open to any other rooms then he's going to need even more sub. The VTF15 would do nicely.

MMM...You have to decide what you want.
The VTF-15H is at least as powerful as 2- VTF-3 MK3.(maybe more)
The VTF3 MK3 is a very very powerful 12" sub. The most powerful sub with a single 12" I have heard at under $1000.
The VTF3 MK3 would kill, and I mean kill, the polks u are mentioning...

I have a friend(with a 4,500cufeet room) who is not as obssessed as some of us in bass, and he has a VTF2-MK3, he thinks his sub is way more powerful than what he needs...

What is your total space, counting all open areas?

The last thing I want to do is get a sub that's going to fall short, and based on my room size, the vtf15 is where I'm probably going to end up going. I guess I was just looking for a little assurance prior to my purchase... I'm just going to pull the trigger on one and see how she does.

Then your friend needs to see a therapist or call me so we can set them up properly.

Thanks everyone for the interesting reading and assurances. Let's see how bad this beast really is.
