$1000 for a Subwoofer

For Christmas my wife is letting me spend a $1000 on a new subwoofer.
My room is 15' x 17'. I'm mainly use it for home theatre but I do want a sub that can fill the room, but accuracy is a concern for me. I was thinking a rythmik, but I'm not sure how good they are for home theatre. Currently I'm using a BIC F12 how much louder would the Rythmic be? Can you all give me any suggestions?
Is there something that is a good balance? Thanks for the help.

Too bad the new HSU VTF-15H would be $1018 delivered, that would be a great suggestion. Well, there is always the ED A7S-450 ($850 delivered). Tough to beat that one as well. Big and heavy so be prepared!!

If you really can not shell out the extra $18 for the Hsu VTF-15H, you might take a look at the CHT 18.1, Epik Empire, or Rythmik f15.

Well the $18 is worth considering. How does it compare to the Rythmik for accuracy and output? Which is more accurate and which will have more output? Appreciate the insight... I'm so excited. I really like the looks of the Rythmik but also like the HSU... those were the two I have been eying. Let's decide between these two.

I'd probably lean towards the HSU and feel pretty confident that, by design, it will have more output through the entire range. HSU is renowned for their musicality and several AVS members attest to its thunderous bass. That being said, the Rythmic is entirely capable as well so it seems there is no wrong choice here. if it were me, I'd have the HSU.

What about the F12? I am partial to the piano black finish and the Piano Black finish for the F15 puts me $150 over my budget... Unless you think the down firing D15 is good too. I really dont like the black oak or walnut finish. I do like the rosenut finish of the HSU but am worried that it will looks funny with my Cherry finished Canton speakers. Thoughts on these 3 things? I appreciate the help. I have no idea what to expect here... the only thing i have heard and could compare to is the BIC F12 I have. I realize that these are way different leagues but I dont know what I'm really getting for that much more money.

The ED A7S-450 now comes in gloss black and is pretty incredible. It is also less expensive than the others mentioned but will come in at a tick over $1000. Like I said, you may be fretting over nothing as all these subs will perform incredibly well. Go with your gut and if the Rythmik is what you really want, GO FOR IT!!!! You wont regret it later.

Going down firing should have no real bearing on output or SQ. If you need more output go for the HSU. If you want the most accurate sub go for the Rythmik. Neither are really a slouch in either department tho. A7S 450 is cool too.

And the F12 would be a good buy as well for my 15 x 17 room? Or should I go with the down firing D15? They are the same price... which is confusing me.

If you want the Rythmik I'd save a bit longer for the F15. I've heard the Hsu and it's pretty awesome. FWIW Audioholics should be posting a review on Tuesday.

I've listened to the F12, F15, and the Vtf-15h. Like everybody said, you can't go wrong with any of these. You should definitely be comfortable with the looks so the piano black on the f12 and d15 would be nice. The rosenut on the Vtf-15h looks really nice and is actually pretty dark (not sure how dark your cherry speakers are).

I believe the f12 sounds better than the d15 for music. If you go with a Rythmik, and do a lot of HT and or listen to music with a lot of deep bass, then the d15 will fit your bill. Of course if you went with the f12, you can add a 2nd f12 later and this dual set-up will outperform a single d15 in the low frequencies.

The vtf-15h is very accurate and along the lines of the Rythmiks in its sealed mode. With its ports open the output is pretty crazy, and its still pretty accurate. The output would be equivalent to 2 d15s.

Hope this helps.

Alright thanks all. I think I'm going to go with the Rytmik F15... going over budget by $140, but I just wont tell the wife. Looks and accuracy are my first priority. I like the looks of the Rythmik better. I'm sure the SVS is a little better for home theatre but I'm sure the Rytmik is going to be plenty for me. If it's twice as loud as my BIC I'll be thrilled. I know it will be way more accurate. Time to order it... Can't wait. Too bad it's on back order for a bit.

I thought you said not a dime over a grand? You went like 1400 dimes over your $1000 limit. I know what it's like, i planned to spend 500 and ended up doubling that.

It's only $150 over. I'm not getting the HP. I'm getting the F15SE. which will be like 1140 shipped. My wife said not a dime over $1000 but she wont notice the extra $140 is even gone. I was going to go with the F12 but figured I dont want to ever regret not spending the extra couple hundred for the F15. I'm going to place my order here in a minute.

I think you will love your F15. Every time we watch a movie with bass heavy scenes in it and the couch feels like it's going to shift, my wife gives me that look of disapproval like I've done something wrong. The Hurt Locker last night was especially awesome on it.

The Rythmik 15" is only a small cost increment over the 12", I think the 15" is a great deal.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I'm sorry to start another "what should i get for x amount money" threads that have been hashed over many times on AVS. I had figured I was going to go with Rythmik or HSU. I just needed someone to validate me decision as $1000 is a lot of money to this guy. Happy Holidays.
