Official OPPO BDP-95 Anticipation Thread - Page 28

I have the 83SE and really wanted to upgrade but I will have to wait till after the general release so if someone wants my pre-release slot PM me.
The problem with this recent retirement is that it puts cricks in my upgrade-itus! Twice as much time and half as much money!

FYI - I received the pre-release e-mail yesterday but did not open it until this AM. Called OPPO when they opened only to find out all the pre-release units have been spoken for... so, did a pre-order for March shipment. Per oppo: the number of pre-release units were over 100, number of units for March shipment 10,000+.

Good! That will allow me enough time collecting beer cans along the road to recycle and satisfy my need to upgrade!

Can anybody take a guess on why oppo had only 100 units ready to ship right now and in a month will have 100 times as much available to ship?

What does that mean to us early adopters of the unit concerning differences between them?

Oppo would not say exactly the number of prerelease units only that it was over 100.

No difference to early adopters - the pre-release units were air freighted to the US. The March release units are being boat shipped.

Answering as an early adopter, maybe the first 100 are made by hand and thoroughly tested for the previous 3 months

I just spoke with Oppo about the lack of a M-A fascia to replace my 83 M-A shelf. It turns out there is a rack mount kit. (Two "L" angles) One removes the feet from the unit first. So, with the feet removed, would the 95 take up the same amount of rack space as my 83 does now (sitting on a M-A shelf)?

Indeed. Sorry, I had a massive brainfart last night so I had made a mistake in my statement. Already corrected.

The Middle Atlantic custom shelf for the 83 uses 2 rack spaces. The 95 is taller than 2 rack spaces, so it will have to use 3 rack spaces. The ears presumably have some sort of frame between them to fill in the space to make up the difference between 3U and the 95's actual height.

Neuro - I think you need to edit your post again. According to the specs, the 95 is 4" tall, which is > 2RU. It's 2.28RU and in RU-speak, one always rounds up because that's the number of rack spaces that will be consumed.

1) How tall is a BDP-95 without the feet?
2) According to Oppo, the rack mount kit is two "L" angles without any horizontal 'frame' between them. So, given this, is the BDP-95 w/o feet exactly 2U? (=3.5") (With feet, it is 4" tall = just over 2U.)

1) Don't know.
2) That's certainly a possibility. If so, I'd plan on reserving a rack space with a blank / vented panel above the 95 to give it room to breath.

Mid-Atlantic does not sell "fractional" rack blanking panels; they are all in multiplies of "U."

Huh? When did I suggest that M-A sells fractional blanking panels? There are or will be 2 different rack mount possibilities for the 95:

Option 1) Purchase ears from OPPO. If your guess that the 95 is exactly 2U with the feet removed, you remove the feet, attach the ears, and mount the 95 in 2 rack spaces. In this case, I would recommend installing a blank or vented 1U panel above it to give the 95 room to breathe. Total spaces used up in the rack = 3U.

Option 2) Purchase a Middle Atlantic custom rack shelf for the 95 when they show up in M-A's database. As is normal with M-A custom shelves, you would not remove the feet and the custom faceplate will use 3 rack spaces. Total spaces used up in the rack = 3U.

Nothing in my previous post suggested anything about fractional blanking panels.

What I meant was if the BDP95 w/o feet is not exactly 2U, then that would be a fractional height. Meaning that M-A would have to come out with a fascia to make up the difference.

I use a vent panel at the top of my M-A rack.

I don't think it will mean anything at this moment in time, last time I bought from them an early 83 player I got a limited edition player with no DVD-A moniker

My answer was going along with your guess that the 95 might be exactly 2U tall with the feet removed in which case there's no fractional height involved. If OPPO is selling ears, it seems safe to assume that they aren't going to leave you with empty space to worry about.

I'd still recommend an empty rack space between the 95 and the next component above it unless the 95 is the top component in the rack unless OPPO says that breathing space isn't needed.

I still have a question about how the Oppo handles CD playback through its dedicated analog outs. Does it over- or up-sample before doing the digital-to-analog conversion? I plan to use the balanced outs into my Anthem Statement D2V for stereo, and HDMI for multichannel.

Thanks!

ALCOM:

The Oppo doesn't up-sample anything. The sampling rate is purely determined by the source. For PCM, it could 44.1K(red book CDs), 88.2KHz (some SACDs) or 192KHz (for some highrez SACDs or BD music). The output sampling rate of SACD's to the DAC using their 1-bit DSD protocol is 2.8224 MHz. This would be the case if you choose "DSD" instead of "LPCM" in the sound options menu.

By taking a crude measurement from the images on the Oppo site, it looks like the height will be right about 3.5" without the feet, so 2U.

With the fan on the back, do you think the extra space above is really needed?

I don't believe the fan comes on until a certain threshold is reached, so the more breathing room the 95 has the longer it may take to reach that threshold. And I always prefer to err on the side of caution rather than risk overheating a component (fan or no fan). To a certain degree (sorry for the pun), it depends on what component is above it, but I'd still be inclined to give it the breathing room.

Nice catch! RU-speak.

Has anyone who ordered yesterday and received a confirmation seen a status change on their order? On the 93, they started shipping a little earlier than they indicated as I recall. It will be interesting to see some hands on reports.

The BDP-95 units need to be upgraded. So all units will be shipping out next week.
how will they be upgraded?
Firmware.
--Bob
It has to be the offical FW and not the beta. This is not a beta test player as per the link.

"Since the BDP-95 shares the same software as the BDP-93 (released in December, 2010), you will not have to worry about the BDP-95's stability. All firmware enhancements will be installed on your BDP-95 prior to it shipping."
Yep.
--Bob
This will be the FW then "Main Version: BDP9x-33-1216".

Do you mean the firmware needs upgrading.
