Google TV Pulls Out of CES
By Julie Jacobson
Amid poor reviews, Google asks Toshiba, LG, Sharp to delay their Google TV offerings and refrain from showing at the Consumer Electronics Show.

That giant sucking sound you hear is Google TV pulling out of the Consumer Electronics Show.

Apparently, Google has asked Sony, Toshiba, LG, Sharp and possibly other partners to delay the introduction of new TVs incorporating the new Web TV platform.

The New York Times reports that Google caught some of the manufacturers off guard with the late-hour request:

"Google as a company is not a particularly partner-friendly or partner-focused company," said James L. McQuivey, an analyst at Forrester, who added that because of the delay, it might take another year before Google TV has a chance to catch fire.

Executives at the television makers played down the idea that they were reacting to an abrupt change in marching orders from Google, but according to people familiar with the negotiations, they were caught by surprise.

Sounds like you don't either. This doesn't have any more to do with Sony than is does Toshiba, LG, or Sharp. This is Google's mess. They are the ones that need to get it right. They won't though.

GoogleTV is the next Google Wave.

Google TV needs to implement cable-cards so we can remove DVR's from the equation. Once they do that, I'll definitely get one. No stupid monthly fee will entice many hordes of people to want one on its own.

Wait, so if it's not ready for primetime I'm assuming they stopped selling the meh inspiring versions you find out in Best Buy today?

I have the Logitech Google TV. It was a developer perk. In a nutshell it is not worth the current price by any means of the imagination. I have a Mac Mini running Plex and that is the best HTPC in my opinion. The only thing the GTV has going for it is the integration with your satellite functionality. It is pretty nice to be watching a show then go PIP to look at a website, check email or look something up on Wikipedia. It is a true web experience and that is something that PLEX, Boxie or any of the other boxes can duplicate at this time.

I unboxed it on my site a few weeks ago but have not posted a full review or my initial thoughts on it yet.

What has stopped my from putting it on eBay is the release of the GTV API. When that happens then the fun begins and it just might have a change to take some time away from my Mac Mini Plex system.

I'm pretty much holding off to see if Dish brings a new dvr with Sling and GoogleTV fully integrated. I was just about to go for a 922 when GoogleTV hit, so I'm waiting. If they bring a new box with Gtv integrated, it would dominate. But I have no interest in any other current or announced solutions. I already have an htpc; so while Gtv may have a nice interface, it doesnt offer anything significant yet over my existing htpc (accept connecting to the Dish DVR, but it's not yet enough improvement to justify the price)

No, that's S O N Y, as in SXRD. The reference was to bringing out half-baked products.
