Trying to improve overall sound quality- where do i start?

Hi All-

I am at the point where I believe some room treatment is necessary. I have a pretty standard family room with for the most part probably standard reflection points, etc. I'm wondering if someone can tell me what I need to buy to help retain sound within my family room. I have leather seating, and that's about it A few things on the wall, but no panels or anything. I'm limited to where I can actually put the panels to the immediate left & behind my front left, and immediately behind my front right & to the right of it. That's about the only area that I can put any paneling.

Should I get some owens corning 703 panels, or something similar? Any DIY ideas out there?

Thanks for any help!

Check out the acoustic treatments master thread at the top of this forum, and the new bass trap thread below. You can try out the effects of bass trapping with a bunch of cushions from your couch. Bass trapping might be where you start, but I'm no expert.

The aforementioned acoustic treatments master thread is a good place to look. I would start by describing what you're hearing now that you're not satisfied with - some examples (that may lend themselves to acoustic treatment) would be: "boomy bass", some frequencies louder or quieter than others; "ringing"; dialog is not clear; room sounds too "live"; room sounds too "dead"; etc.

I'm not an expert either, but just like with a doctor, it's easier to prescribe a treatment if you know the patient's symptoms. A treatment plan that works well in one room might just make things worse in another.

Brad is correct. Start with a plan! Treatment strategies can really add a lot to the room both aesthetically and acoustically. If you develop a plan, you can have both, and have it done right the first time.
