Onkyo ht-r550 7.1 audio

with the HDMI being just for video pass through, it appears to not be able to get any true 7.1 audio. Is the only 7.1 audio that I can get just 5.1 processed and made into a 7.1 signal?

I finally got a 1080p tv (Mit. 60638)and just hooked my ps3 to it via HDMI. I see that it says that it 7.1 master audio when hooked up that way.

To get surround sound, I have my ps3 hooked up to my Onkyo via optical.

So is there no way for me to get true 7.1 out of this receiver?

Also, when the volume is up (not too loud, but theater loud) the receiver will click, shut off, and flash a red light. I turn it back on, turn down the volume, and when a loud scene comes on, it shuts off again. Are there any easy ways to fix this? Is it shot? How much would it be to fix it? Could I fix it it myself?

I realize that buying a new receiver is ideal, but I just got the TV and 3D glasses so I have no spare money!

Optical connections are limited to legacy DD 5.1 and DTS, which do not support 7.1. If you play a Blu-ray with a lossless 7.1 soundtrack, the player will output a 5.1 version over optical instead. You can apply a surround mode such as PLIIx to create 7.1 using matrix processing. But, you can't get the discrete 7.1 mix unless your receiver can process audio over HDMI.

As for the AVR shutting off, there's definitely something wrong. Most receivers have protection circuits that will shut the unit down to prevent overheating or other damaging effects. Check the manual or call Onkyo support.
