Need inexpensive front speakers and sub for midsize room

We moved into a condo last year and I figure now is a good time to look at home theater options. I have had my eye on the ~$400 Denon receiver, which seems to be a decent inexpensive choice. The previous owners had installed some rear speakers in the ceiling and I have no idea what brand they are or how they are oriented. I figured I would get the receiver, check out how they sound, and replace them if necessary.

This leaves me trying to figure out what to do about 2 front speakers, a center, and a subwoofer. My room is maybe 18x18 and we sit right in the middle. Because this is a condo, I don't think we need the sound to be booming, but I want to make sure the speakers are good enough to fill the room. I think what I am looking for is a decent set of bookshelf speakers for the fronts.

I was looking to spend no more than 1000 for the 4 pieces, but I have zero knowledge of good brands. I think when I looked 10 years ago everyone was talking about how Energy made a great bookshelf system for not a lot. I appreciate your help!

Edit: I forgot to mention that the room has a hardwood floor with a large rug in the middle. The sub would be on the floor, and the speakers would probably be on the tv stand flanking the 52" tv.

Your budget allows for some flexibility so I suggest going to a home audio store and demoing some speakers. Though for a subwoofer I would purchase from an internet direct subwoofer company like HSU, Epik, eD, SVS, etc.

I've been extremely happy with my Polk Audio Monitor 50 floorstanding speakers and Polk CS1 center channel speaker. I got a great deal on the speakers from newegg.com. Their everyday prices on Polk are about 40% less than big box stores. You can get additional discounts with coupon codes often available online. I'm using a Denon AVR-1609. I'm going to purchase the Polk PSW10 subwoofer soon.

Do you have room for small floorstanding speakers on each side of the TV? If so Vanns has the Energy RC-30s for $199 each and the RC Mini center for $130. That would leave you over $450 for a decent sub which should be plenty. I can't imagine putting bookshelf speakers on a tv stand without blocking the lcd. You'd have to have a very wide stand.

The new Pioneer line is getting some good reviews.
You can buy them at Best Buy.
Complete 5.1 package for less then 400

Don't get a PSW-10 subwoofer, they don't perform very well. What is the budget for a sub?

I need to keep it under $150.00. Would you recommend the Dayton Sub-100?

The cheapest sub I would buy would be the Emotiva. $150 for a subwoofer is ridiculously low. Better to get two full range speakers and just use stereo sound.

The cheapest sub I can ever recommend is the BIC F12 for around $195. Anything less is simply not worth it...

I'll go with the BIC F12. Thanks for the advise. I don't want to throw away $100.00 on the PSW-10. Although, I could get two of them for the price of the BIC F12. Will one BIC F12 sound better than two PSW-10s?

I'm guessing the advantage the BIC F12 has is in the range on the low side which wouldn't be improved by adding an additional sub.

I believe it would. The low-price Polk subs are simply no good, so using two would not solve anything...

The Bic would certainly perform better than the Polk(s), but don't discount the Dayton SUB 120. To blanket state that any sub <$195 is simply not worth it is just not accurate. This sub is a capable performer for the price ($140), as is Velodyne's VX-11 ($170).

Just go with a pair of Infinity P162 bookshelves as mains and a matched PC250 center. Add an Elemental designs A2-300 subwoofer and one of their isolation pads and you should be ll set. Just keep in mind that as a custom builder you may have to wait a few weeks for the sub.

Do try craigslist, if you can spare the time. I love subs, and I'm currently running 3, all bought through craigslist: Sony 12" SA-WM40 ($50), JBL PSW-1200 dual 12" ($39), Axiom EP500 dsp 18Hz- (< $100).

I really like my P162's, excellent speaker with very even performance across the audio spectrum.

I would recommend going to the PC350 center. For $50 more, it is a pretty reasonable upgrade.

As you have more in your budget for a sub than I did, I will let others recommend one.

Certainly, a good sub is worth the investment.

Thanks for the recommendation. It looks like the 162s do get pretty good reviews. Now, if only there was a place I could listen to them in Chicago. One of the reviews for the C350 center mentioned something about how it is somehow more powerful than the bookshelf speakers. Is the C350 as good a match for the P162s as the C250? What is the difference between the two models? You make it sound like the $50 upgrade is worth it.

Call the Frys in Downers Grove and ask about P162 and the P362. It looks like the P362 towers are on sale for cheap. If so grab two while they are on sale. That's an awesome price! Note that if you can't listen to the discontinued P162 you can probably audition the near identical replacement P163.

The PC350 is a 3-way center designed as a match to the 3-way P362 tower. The PC250 was designed as a match for the 2-way P252 and P162. I don't see any reason why the PC350 wouldn't work just fine with the P162 but haven't heard the two together.

That is a wicked price on the P362's.

Upgrading to the PC350 was something I debated about doing, but after reading the various reviews at Crutchfield of the P1262, PC250 and PC350, it seemed that the PC350 was the way to go.

And, for my wife and I, at least, it definitely works well.

Just yesterday we got the receiver. I hooked it up to test out the preinstalled ceiling rear speakers and they actually sound pretty good, aside from them firing downward.

We took a look at our situation with our furniture and I think now that the front speakers are going to have to go on the stand next to the tv, which means I am now looking for good satellite, center, and sub recommendations for the same price point. Everyone I know is ordering that B-something 12 subwoofer, which I assume still fits this situation.

A quick glance through some threads here has people recommending energy and orb front and centers, and, my coworker just bought the new polk satellite line. Anything else I should consider for less than $800 (I think that sub is around $200) for the two front and the center?

Thanks again.
