Can HDMI be used backwards?

HDMI can be used to present a computer display onto a TV, but can it be used to display the contents of a TV onto the computer display? I'm trying to create a play-through for a video game I own, but I can't figure out how to record it without the use of a computer.

If your TV has an HDMI output, then you should be able to send video from it to your computer. But I doubt that many - if any - TVs come with HDMI outputs.

Even though HDMI input and output connectors are the same, the HDMI signal is not bi-directional. Thus each connector is either an input or an output, but not both.
