Awesome! I can't wait to 'hear' your impressions of the latest and newest iteration.
Are you planning on posting plans for the final design?

Start reading at post 307. Post 312 has the new design in a zip complete.

Cool, thanks!

I will take another perusal and a further look at those posts.
Don't forget to post some pictures of the build along the way...if there are no pix, it never happened.tongue.gif:D

That has to be one bad ass sub!cool.gif

EDIT: Oh! Now I see the build and the pix! Nice!

It makes much more sense now having seen the build pictures. I was thinking it was a dual driver design based on the thread title.

I apologize, I must have been bass drunk when reading/posting today.biggrin.gif

Don't apologize - I never started a new thread when we morphed it from a single sub-woofer in the garage with dual 15's - and a huge cutout into the HT - to two subs inside. We decided a couple years back - designing subs regular people could build might be a better idea - than an esoteric one off no one but me would be interested in.. Should have started a new thread then.

someone on the somethingawful forums mentioned that the THX Ultra2 system used cheap off the shelf drivers from parts express. Is there any truth to that ?

Gotcha. wink.gif

It is is a cool design, especially since you fine tuned it thoroughly.

That someone probably posted that because PE did sell some of the individual drivers in a buyout deal.

Awesome speakers dB! smile.gif

I picked up on it when you posted the pics; was curious but didn't say anything -- had no idea they were such a labor of love for you. Pretty cool stuff.

Outside of my family, I have two basic passions. Audio was and is the first and foremost passion in my life starting at the ripe ole' age of 9. (Thank you Pop). Labor of love they definitely are, I consider myself lucky to have been (and still am) able to rub elbows with and learn at the hands (or feet in the case of Paul W. Klipsch) of many of our industries giants..

<-- just might be one of the luckiest audio geeks in the world smile.gifsmile.gif

That's really cool man. cool.gif Must be tough to drag yourself into work some days, eh? tongue.gif Hats off to you for doing what you love and having success at it.

The CVX are nice drivers, but sometimes (OK, every time) when looking at them I kinda wish they were just a little less 'blingy'; although I know that caters to the market they are in. Do the adornments on the cones perhaps act as stiffening ribs for better pistonic behavior? wink.gif

Hmmmmm....

.

Yes, I know they are raw, un finished...... Apologies, it was late and dark when I finished.

Inside - pic was a cell flash from my couch in a dark room - but here they are, in the flesh..

After we visit the aquarium tomorrow, I'll be EQ'ing / dialing them in....

Some data.

Near Field SPL Raw

Near Field Quick EQ 1. -5dB 25hz Q=2. -
25hz -5dB q2@34hz; -4dB q7 @50hz -8dB; q5 @60hz -9dB Q 8. 48dB 13hz L/R; HPF 48dB 70hz L/R.

Glitch in above was an REW glitch that went away the next run

Near Field Raw EQ 1 mic moved to listening position - NO EQ CHANGES

Again that curve IS The SAME EQ (NO CHANGES for room EQ) applied at Near Field with mic at Couch position, Two Wreckers

The above three curves overlaid on each other

19hz SPL from listening room UN CORRECTED C weighting curve 2 wreckers (Room is huge - and not great for loading)

Add ~ 7.5dB for C weighting.

25hz SPL from listening room UN CORRECTED C weighting curve 2 wreckers

Add 5dB for C weighting.

This is testing with the Omni Mic for measurement through REW 5.01 Beta 13. The OmniMic is clipping too hard to get clean SPL curves.

I will update as I dial it in, and get the clipping ironed out.I will also detail the room so you don't think this is a ... disappointment SPL wise.. The room is a BASS SUCK...

Edit:

The layout living / kitchen / dining area is an open floor plan. I don't have a dedicated HT - it's our living space too. 800+ square feet floor space, 10' ceilings. 8,000 plus cubic feet loaded. Sub optimal listening position (reflection right behind head) and woofer loading. Layout sketch is below.

Since the scale got clipped, here is that in-room curve....

Yeah - that's -3 dB at 12 Hz.

Update post above with floor plan layout. I'll update once I'm Eq'd again.
Looks very workable dB! Fr at the listening position seems to have stayed pretty much in line with the nearfield measurement. With the bit of gain from your "BASS SUCK" room, looks like the makings of a nice little house curve. smile.gif

My new UE-PC DSP / System crossover/Linear Phase Equalizer smile.gif An ENORMOUS thank you to (you know who you are)!!!

Need to set up cabinets in the garage for the 7 additional amplifiers being added to the system, run some snakes - build some cables, and learn my way around the UE system..

This is going to be fun. Full active front stage - linear phase, individual / crossover / EQ per each / linear phase processing per each smile.gif

Wow! I would spend hours, days, months, trying to tune my setup with that. That is amazing! Good luck and have fun.
Pretty cool toy dB! Hooked up by a secret agent, eh? wink.gif Would love to hear what you think about it compared to the QSC DSP after you play with it for awhile.
Deon- did you get the EQ ironed out yet?
