Fans may be a little weary of where storylines are going this season, but that hasn't stopped them from turning out to see what happens next on "Falling Skies." And that has earned the show a fourth season by TNT.
The show continues to dominate basic cable in key advertising demographics of adults 18 to 49 and 25 to 54, according to The Hollywood Reporter leading both categories over the summer. The show is averaging 5.8 million viewers, up from 5.6 million the year before, when including all viewers, including those who watch it later on their DVRs.
But there are some signs that the audience is eroding a bit. The Season 3 premiere was off by 300,000 viewers, attracting 4.2 million. Yet, the key advertising demos remains strong, and helped make the decision by TNT quite easy.
The alien-invasion series has kept it simple in terms of distribution. Each season has been just 10 episodes, and TNT has been consistent on when it airs, making sure not to alienate -- for a lack of a better word -- its core audience. The overall premise has remained simplified as well, allowing "Falling Skies" to carry story arcs, but not so deep that casual viewers could not tune in from time to time as well.
"Falling Skies" stars Noah Wyle, Drew Roy, Moon Bloodgood, Seychelle Gabriel and Will Patton. It's one of three television series produced by Steven Spielberg, joining the summer CBS series from Stephen King "Under the Dome" as well as the upcoming "Lucky 7" for ABC expected to hit the schedule in the fall.
"Falling Skies" airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on TNT.
